  1. I think a lot of this type of discussion depends on what type of learner you are. I’m a visual learner, so for me the shape of the mode or scale on the fretboard ‘locks in’ more easily. It also means that you can overlay any other mode onto the one you’re looking to visualise how you would move from one to another. A useful exercise is to know which mode comes out of the 5th of the one you’re currently on. As a starter, if you just manage to pin down Ionian - Mixolydian - Ionian you’ll pin down a good useful range. I’ve also taken up keys in the last few years as well. I cannot emphasise how much you will improve as a bassist if you start learning keys. It’s transformative. Also, the piano shows modes (in C major) so simply. It also shows you in C maj why a key has the diatonic order of maj, min, min, maj, maj(dom7), min, min(dim)(half dim7) I’ve provided this link elsewhere, it also comes as an app. Well worth working through. Not bass specific. https://www.musictheory.net/lessons Hope that helps.
  2. I’ve had the 4 and 5 of these. Marvellous basses.
  3. Can we go back to the first statement in the thread. Please justify four basses to yourself otherwise many of us are in deep trouble…..
  4. Just in case you’ve never been shown: when you fit a bass buggy, lie the bass (in its case) on its side and attach the buggy to the side in the air. Then just roll up and over onto the wheels.
  5. This was very tempting, but I’m really awaiting a Noguera YC semi fretless to appear ….
  6. Given the size of the Short Scale Appreciation thread, I’m surprised this is still here.
  7. If you can use a 34” and would consider a semi, the Sire GB5 might be worth a look and they’re currently on sale under £400. Bridge is set well back on them.
  8. This time a personal attachment, I now own this beauty. https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/jaydee-supernatural-mark-king-series-ii-cherry-red-1985-pre-owned/ I’ll do a NBD in due course…..
  9. No personal attachment or interest, but if I were looking for a passive shortie …. https://bassbros.co.uk/product/atelier-z-baby-z-4j-vintage/
  10. I saw this today, no personal association. https://reverb.com/uk/item/87791567-baldly-demolished-wal-bass-mk1-body
  11. Alem.ACG352.mp3 Wal.ACG552.mp3 Two sound samples, an Alembic SC Sig bass playing a start of a track, then the Salace in the same position and then the Salace in the correct position that shows more of the Salace range. The Wal one has a noodle on a Wal Mk2 5 and an ACG Salace 6 in Bm. Both have flats on. Hope that helps.
  12. A pair of 30.5” Salace basses, B - C with no problems. Both have DFMs, but not the MCs. The fretted one (352 on the ACG site) can produce a very convincing Alembic style sound when “popped” on the treble side. The Wal sound is also closely produced by the fretless (552). I am lucky enough to own a Wal mk2 5 so have compared of course. The trick here I find is to tune your filter to a frequency of interest within your rif to feature it. Good luck!
  13. I have recently purchased a short scale sterling stingray from this parish and it’s fab. Another one has just appeared: https://bassbros.co.uk/product/sterling-by-music-man-stingray-short-scale-2/
  14. Wrong forum, but a great price.
  15. I had a noodle on one like this earlier this year. Very nice bass.
  16. Let me throw a curve ball out. @Lukasz Chyla could make you a custom bass. Here’s mine
  17. A while back I bought an ACG Salace shortie (352) from @binky_bass. And that was it. Once you’ve got one ….. Now as it happens, Alan found the rest of the same piece of camphor that’s on the back of 352. So the spec for my own build fell out pretty easily. 30.5” scale DFM pre amp Lined fretless ETS hardware And with its twin, I think of them as my Carlsberg twins
  18. I’ve preached this before but really do believe it. A couple of lessons with a classical db tutor on positioning of the bass and left/right hand pizz technique is the most important money a db player can spend. It’s really noticeable for yourself in terms of ‘destressing your hands and playing stamina. Good luck.
  19. Malcolm Healey has a lot of good quality basses and makes them as well. A lot are above your price range, but he has many you could afford. I could imagine going to him and the double bass room from Lincoln in one trip. http://www.healeyviolins.com Good luck.
  20. Perhaps try reviewing the wiring to see if there are any loose or dry joints. High impedance points can cause sound issues & distortions.
  21. The ZPO 5 is a very good bass, B-G or E-C. Here beside a Fender MM 34” ZPO with an East pre
