1.
Sounds similar to the sound he has in RATM for Testify: https://www.youtube....h?v=6nw3gzAnBiA I really reckon it could be a clean (but still gritty) bass track mixed with a fuzz. Really nasal-sounding fuzz too, so perhaps it's a modded Big Muff or something?
Does anybody else think that sounds badass?
2.
Soundwise - everybody tends to lean towards saying they are like Hofner. There's lots of stuff on our soundcloud, and on youtube if you search for "Chowny Bass". The CHB-1 and CHB-2 use exactly the same hardware.
Like Hofner? Good to know, thanks
3.
If I was going to try and emulate that sound, I'd probably start with my jackhammer in a blended loop, cut the lows and highs, and then play with the mids until it got to where I wanted. The whole lot would have to go through a decent amp or amp-sim though. The jackhammer is an ace pedal anyway, very versatile and you can get them used for under £40. It might be worth you grabbing one to experiment?
Cheers for all the advice man
4. Just listened to it again, I get what you mean about the stuck wah. I'm trying to roughly replicate his dirty channel sound
5. I think I've read that he uses a few channels. I know he used a marshall guv'nor in RATM at least. It just struck me how substantial / solid / meaty / other daft adjective the driven bass sound was.
6. Firstly I know there's lots of stuff on talkbass about how Tim Commerford gets his tone - from the basses, amps & effects he uses to the mods he carries out on his gear. I'm interested in 1 song specifically though, and only looking for suggestions for a ballpark sound. https://www.youtube....h?v=OkkOGkqGZiw I'm a big Audioslave fan, and was listening to Out Of Exile on the train this morning. I don't know why, but the solo in Drown Me Slowly hasn't stood out to me before but this morning I played it back - 1:37-2:12 - a few times because the bass sounds so great! I know he has a few custom made effects on his board, and he's quite secretive about the details. I'm not looking to replicate his sound 100% (I play a stingray (he played a jazz in audioslave) & I have a clean sounding amp rig), I'm just looking for suggestions on how I get in the same region. It's quite a meaty drive sound. Thankyooouuuuuu
7. Are the pickups in these basses similar sounding to anything else, like the Gretsch Electromatic or Hagstrom Viking?
8.
THREAD HIJACK! If you guys are at the London Bass Guitar Show we will be selling CHB-1's on the day (provided you are right handed!), with a free £49 gig bag, so you can saunter out with your very own. Plus we have a CHB-1 lefty and a CHB-2 (righty) prototype to try. So if you're gonna be there it might help make your mind up.
Hahaha! Unfortunately I won't, it's a big trek for me. I think I'm more interested in the CHB-2 due to the scale.
9. I know there are a few threads about these basses on here already, so apologies for any deja-vu you might experience With the CHB-2 coming out (with the 34' neck and heavier body so no neck dive) I'm sorely tempted. I'm properly excited about this bass, and without meaning to offend anyone am I more excited than I should be? Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things about this bass to be excited about - it looks great, sounds great and the price is great - but is there something about this bass's sound that sets it apart from all other hollowbody basses out there... or is it just a nice bass and do I have a really bad case of GAS?
10.
Although i do have a proper stand, these days im more likely to use one of these
That doesn't look nearly sturdy enough, looks like it will fall if knocked. I'm interested in the foam holder, I emailed them and got an auto-response but still haven't heard back
11. Great video. Very interesting - I play a 3eq HH and love it anf I thought I'd prefer the ceramic pu, but the classic comes out on top for me.
12. I have a Bergantino CN212, don't think I have a lip I could use for this. Now I'm considering this - http://www.guitarholder.com/ It's a foam holder, and attaches to a cabinet with a velcro strip. I've emailed them asking how the velcro attaches to the cabinet.
13. I've not long bought a Markbass LMT and a Bergantino CN212, which is a very clean and transparent sounding rig. I haven't tried one but no doubt I'd like the sound of the Aguilar TH500, but I wanted a transparent rig so that if I wanted a specific sound at some point I could get that by adding pedals into my chain. I think for me at least buying a transparent rig future-proofs it - I know what music I like now, but my music tastes might change in time. Having said that I don't actually use any pedals at the minute, but I plan to when I have the wonga. For now I'm just enjoying playing through a rig that allows my bass to be heard as it was designed to be.
14. I don't disagree with you, but I just recently bought a Bergantino CN212 and a 500w head. With this set up I can now move everything from the car into the venue, without needing to faff with the likes of trolleys. If I had the money, the storage, etc. I'd maybe go buy another CN212 - but I don't. This cab is the best cab for me, it's taller than most 4x10's and the sound dispersion is great. If I always had somebody to help me move my gear I might have bought something big like a Bergantino NV610T but I don't, so this was the option for me.
15. I love the black elite jazz with maple board and black inlays, I think that's as good looking as a jazz gets. Nearly bought an am. deluxe jazz once but was disappointed by the sound, I'd love to stick a pair of Nordstrand Big Splits in one of these an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp.
16.
Hope it works out for you... Just thinking, do you think this will work with your cab? Just that IMO its nice to bring the thing you will attach it to along to the gig (i.e. your cab) as sometimes there just isn't a suitably stable protrudence handy. After my cab, I have had success with the bass drum, drummer willing.
Looking at it I'm not sure it will, there isn't really a lip on my cabinet. Annoyingly there aren't many pictures of the back of the dock so I can't know 100%.
17. I use Mono Betty straps and Ernie Ball strap locks on my stingray.
18. I think I'm going to try out that Planet Waves guitar dock
19.
I've got one. It's fine for a symmetrical-bodied guitar at home. But I wouldn't trust on stage and never anywhere with a bass on it. The centre of gravity is just too high for it to be stable.
That's why I won't be touching one.
20.
That Stingray HH has induced a serious amount of GAS for me and I already own one - not in white though. I could get into serious trouble.......!
That's what I was thinking I already have an HH in natural, but that white bass (with a tort guard) is giving me issues!
21.
This works for me - Planet Waves Guitar Dock I do worry that I'm entrusting the safety of my bass to a piece of plastic, but I'm careful and no accidents yet. I have a BF 2 x 12 so its an easy attachment to the ports on the front, and unlike the MB keeper strap, I think this can be attached to lots more things. As well as my cab, I have attached it to tables, speaker stands, bass drum etc etc...
Thanks for the heads up, that looks interesting and might work a treat!
22.
Just got an email from Strings Direct and noticed this, which folds as small as an A-frame but supports the neck:
That looks pretty interesting, might be some potential there.
23.
That's a really bad idea. Your bass will fall over if you so much as stare hard at it.
That's what I'm thinking. Anybody used one of those aluminium stands before?
24. Saw the attached picture of that stand on talkbass, the one in the middle is the one you're talking about. I think that's too much lean for me, looks like it couldn't take a knock. I was considering one of these - they fold up pretty small and look a little more sturdy
