1. I'm waiting to hear back as to whether those adaptors would work of with the pedaltrain volto. Until I've heard back, I'm reluctant to go near stuff that isn't 9v. I definitely like the Diamond's tone but it's not a versatile compressor and can't be used as a peak limiter, and I like the Markbass' sound but its a really big pedal, which on my PT mini won't leave room for much else. Revised contenders are: - Darkglass Supersymmetry - EBS Multicomp - Cali76 Compact Bass - Ovnifx Smoothie - The Darkglass' sound seems to be what I'm after, but multiple people have said its compression is fairly subtle - not sure that's particularly versatile. - The EBS, especially on the tubesim setting, sounds like it fits the bill for me. Numerous reviews I've read though me a bit worried about the quality of them. The footswitch apparently isn't true bypass and there's been a lot said about these not playing well with high-output basses. - I'm increasingly thinking the Cali76 cb is great, but it's a lot of money! Considerably more than everything else I'm looking at. - The Ovnifx definitely gets high praise, sounds like it would suit me. Ovnifx are redesigning the circuit around an optical device instead of an OTA chip, so the new ones may be unproven.
 2.
Try the EBS It alters the tone a little but in tube mode it sounds great. Compression is subtle but effective
I've heard good things about the EBS, on the ovnilab review it says they deteriorate over time though. I've you found that?
 3.
I recently got the Keeley Bassist compressor. It works really well as a limiter and as a transparent 'always on' compressor. You can also turn the compressor setting to zero and use the pedal as a clean boost via the level control. It also has a small footprint and is easy to use. No complaints so far anyway.
Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not really looking for a transparent compressor. Is the Demeter transparent, or does it have some tone to it?
 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh2asjr2k8c This is one of my absolute favourite sounding pedals! Haven't really seen anything like it before, to be fair there aen't many frogs like it on their site either.
 5.
the Effectrode is superb and super fat sounding.... But you won't have the level of control your asking for in your original thread. I had a similar experience with the diamond. The Cali 76b in my opinion does it all well enough and you're able to power it off of a 9v supply in a sensible pedal form. Don't rule out the markbass compressore either but again you'll need to think about power. I used to power mine off a T Rex power supply with my 9v pedals with no problem.
Thanks this is really helpful. So you think the Markbass is closer to what I'm looking for than the Effectrode? I emailed Pedaltrain asking if I could use a gigrig adaptor with a volto ok, and they sad they wouldn't but contact gigrig and see what they say. So I still need to find out if I could power a 12v pedal with it. You're not the first to recommend the cali76 cb. The ovnilab review confused me as it made it out to be a transparent and bright compressor, is it capable of that tonal magic?
 6.
Hi there all, I am back from Adrains Showroom in Aldenhoven and I've been ordered to say kind Regards from Adrian to all of you. Adrian feels very happy that his/teir Basses are so successful in the UK too. We've had a nice Afternoon. Adrian is such a kind and funny Guy. It feels like you're talking to a Friend. We've had a Coffee ant talked about this and that and of Course I've tested a few Basses. To be honest, I was tempted by the "White Rabbit" Basses wich look so awesome in Real. Absolutely stunning. There is a big Party in Adrians House on 18th of Juni, with lots of Live Music, Workshops, Barbecue and so on. So feel free to come. Some Impressions.... Bass Heaven is here... ...and you enter the Showroom. ( I let the Pics talk now...) ...but after I played some Basses I have felt, that an Alder/Rosewood 5-String would be a good Addition to my Ash/Maple Lakland 55-02 and so I went with the blue One. I guess it is not a real LBP it is more vivid, and a bit darker I guess, but I like it, so what? Just came back from a Rehearsal and what should I say.... It is a great Bass. But I will change the Knobs as ever to some black Jazz Bass Knobs, wich are better readable.
That is genuinely on my bucket place - that is a place I need to go to before I die.
 7. I don't know why but I'm surprised to see so many Maurszczyk basses about on here. Still think this is one of the prettiest basses I've ever seen, never seen anything else like it. May well commission a bass of my own some day, I can at least dream...
 8. I emailed about Pedaltrain about using a gigrig/ equivalent adaptor with the volto, and they weren't at all confident. So maybe I stick to 9v alternatives. I'm thinking of starting a thread on Talkbass just because there are more people who have had a wider exposure to pedals, so some may have tried pedals I've listed here.
 9. Has anyone tried the Nemphasis VT Comp? I noticed Mark stocks them, they're on the list of 'Comps I want to try' on ovnilab.com
 10.
I don't see why they wouldn't, unless you run out of amperage. I have thought of getting a volto for my rig as a backup, but would probably need to run atleast 2 in parallel to meat my draw needs, and that's a bit expensive for a backup.
While I've been given one for free it makes sense to try and use it, save forking out for a more versatile power supply. Might email pedaltrain to double check if it's ok with adaptors.
 11.
Greenish pink. Edit (thought id actually add to the conversation): I love my markbass compressore. It runs 9v with a gigrig supanova adapter and sounds lovely. like a rackmounted tube compressor in a pedal.
That's not a bad point actually - the pedaltrain volto has 2 outputs, so I can daisy chain some pedals from one then use an adaptor on the other. If I could run 12v I'd possibly go with the Effectrode PC-2A. I wonder if the volto plays ok with adaptors?
 12. The Hypergravity doesn't get good reviews on Talkbass, sounds like it doesn't colour the tone enough for what I want.
 13. Anybody have any experience with the following? - Darkglass Supersymmetry - Ovnifx Smoothie - Daring Audio Phat Beam - Okko Coca - Dedalo Gorila - Tortenmann TK-23 - Earthquaker Devices The Warden
 14.
I'm going to recommend the Boss LMB3, because it's the only pedal I've kept in use every day. It does limiting without issues, I use it mostly for that, both at home and in live use, but the enhance function is also nice if used in moderation. It won't color your tone much compared to a boutique comp, but it does sweeten things a little bit, and you can pick them up used for about £35. I'd be the first to jump on something more expensive if I felt it was lacking in any way, but I haven't found a reason to stop using it yet.
Thanks for the suggestion man. Please don't think I'm a snob or anything because I've listed 'boutique' pedals, it's just so far the stuff that colours tone nicely and is also a good compressor has seemed to be that way. I'll definitely the LMB-3, though I think it might not colour my tone as much as I'm looking for.
 15. So I actually emailed Diamond about the idea, this was their response: "There's certainly been interest from bassists regarding a smaller version of the bass comp. It would be a little trickier to do as some of the caps used in the bass comp don't currently have a direct surface mount equivalent that we could use to save space however we may dig into this after we finish some other projects we're working on and see what we can come up with. Thanks for emailing and sharing your input!"
 16.
https://m.youtube.co...h?v=VikwVu5qHO0 If you listen through good head phones this demo shows some sounds, rather than trying to go of words Andy
I'm at work atm but will definitely do this later.
I've just noticed there's a Diamond comp Jr. Smaller enclosure, North facing jacks, normal 9v supply ready. I've got a 3Leaf PWNZOR incoming or I'd probably have opted for one of these.
That's a compact version of the guitar pedal - if they made the bass equivalent though I'd definitely be interested! The PWNZOR's been discontinued right?
 17.
Earthquaker Devices 'The Warden' is a great optical pedal - tone control too. Not that you need another option….
Hahaha well tbf I asked for more suggestions! I considered the Warden and haven't ruled it out, but Bongo on ovnilab described it's tone as clear and neutral...
 18.
Yep I run it at 9v
Interesting, thanks for that. The review on ovnilab really threw me off the compact bass because he described it as sounding 'bright, hard, punchy sound with more highs' and said it was the exact opposite of the Darkglass. Going off the comparison he does at the end of the compact bass review the smoothie sounds more like my cup of tea, but then you recommended it for reasons I'd want
 19. Thanks for the suggestion but I really don't want to venture into rack mounted stuff
 20.
That's a shame. But I think you owe it to yourself to hear one if you can. Good luck in your quest.
Thanks man, it does sound good but not that versatile, plus if i was to power it separately there would be no point in using the volto. Somebody on TB suggested the ovnifx smoothie is in the same ball park, but I don't know if you get that magic tone like the Diamond.
 21.
I've got the Cali CB, adds a lot of warmth and with the blend you can really compress your sound but still blend back some original and use the hpf to add in a bit more focused lows. Really good comp it's an always on pedal for me It replaced my old cali76-g, with the added features and size difference it was a no brainer to go to the CB Andy
Do you run it at 9v?
I know you said you don't want the Diamond, but have you actually tried one..? It really is a magic box and you get a super-fat, lush, glossy tone.
I haven't, I know I'd like it. Do you know the website pedalboardplanner.com? Pedaltrain own it, I did a bit of work on the site for them and in return they gave me a PT mini & a Pedaltrain Volto. The volto can't handle the BCP-1.
 22. I' on the hunt for a compressor - I want something for functionality & for a super fat/magic tone. Done a load of reading on ovnilab.com so no need to recommend it. I want something between the 2 extremes - I don't want the likes of the diamond bass comp which is only good for tone, and I don't want something like the MXR which is completely transparent and a good limiter. I want both! I love the FEA DE-CL & Opti-fet, but the whole 12 month waiting list is a bit of a turn off. Doing a lot of reading on ovnilab.com, I think an optical compressor will provide the tone I'm after? The Effectrode sounds great but I want something that will run on 9v. These are the 7 pedals I'm thinking about: - Darkglass Supersymmetry - meant to have a nice tone, but apparently the actually compression effect is subtle which I'm not sure I like - Ovnifx Smoothie - seems like a good compressor. I don't know whether it enhances your tone unless you adjust the tone function, or has a baked in sound ala Diamond BCP-1. - Daring Audio Phat Beam - bit of a wacky pedal and doesn't work as a conventional compressor (read Bongo's review), but apparently capable of a super thick sound while also being a good compressor. - Okko Coca - again not a conventional compressor, it raises the level of your quieter sounds without reducing the level of louder ones. Apparently can produce a fat & dark sound but don't know how well it would work as a peak limiter. - Tortenmann TK-23 - I think this is on the dirty compressor side of things. Apparently sounds thick and old-school which appeals, but the ratio is fixed at 2:1 so it won't act as a peak limiter. - Dedalo Gorila - If I'm honest I don't know all that much about this pedal. I know it's an optical comp that sounds kind of warm, other than that would love more info about this pedal. - Origin Cali76 CB - I've read a lot of conflicting stuff about this one. Some say it's crisp and transparent and nothing like its big brother, others say it adds magic to their tone. So would love some more opinions on it. Not sure how well it would do at 9v with my stingray bass. So there you have it, apologies for the essay Anybody have any experience with any of the above? Or can you recommend something I've not listed (Somebody literally 5 seconds ago on TB suggested the Demeter comp)? Things to consider is I have a high-output bass (stingray) and want something that will fine on 9v.
 23.
It's the variety of tones available that gets me. There's even a video of a guy slapping it on the website, and it sounds great. It's not just a one-trick woofy Hofneralike, faaar from it, although it'll do that if it's what you're after. Sorry if I'm coming across like an advert here but I really like these instruments. Especially the blue
It was the variety that got e excited too. I was wondering whether there was something specific about it that made it sound so good in different settings, or if it was just GAS influencing my ears
 24.
I'm hearing pinched synthy gated fuzz there. B:Assmaster or Diabolik will give you that in spades.
Yeah listene dto a few clips and the b:assmaster nails it! How does one justify having overdrive, distortion & fuzz pedals on one's board?
