1. Is there a severe angle on the split pickup? Want this bass so bad, but if i had my way split pups would be level so there's more room to rest your thumb up top.
2. YES! I'm a student with debts and no income and just bought a stingray
3. I've only been playing for a couple of years now and already I'm sick of GAS! I've just bought a beautiful stingray 4hh with an ash body. Got it for a great price and it sounds f***ing awesome! Yet already I find myself looking at what bass I might get next.
4. It's difficult to pick just one. Yes, a bass might sound great, but if it doesn't look the part I won't get it. But then, if a bass looks good and sounds good, but doesn't feel good ( the ibanez sr1600 comes to mind, don't like the feel of the matte finish on the body) again I won't be getting it. I suppose price is fairly important; you can only buy a bass you can afford. Obviously tone is important - it's a musical instrument so it's always about how the thing sounds - but at least you can change pickups, which is a lot easier to do than changing the feel of a neck, or paint finish on the body. Having just concluded about 6 months worth of shopping around for a bass, i can tell you that the decisive factors for me were looks, feel, price and tone. I went to a music shop and tried about 10 basses, coming away with a clearer indication as to what I wanted but there were still a number of contenders. Then I went to the london bass guitar show and found my stingray - it's a natural finish with an ash body (best looking stingray I've seen ✓), it had the best satin finish neck I've played (feel ✓), the hh setup meant I could get the classic 'ray sound but also hit p and j sounds (tone ✓), and was at least £300 cheaper brand new than a 4h stingray from an ordinary music shop (price ✓).
5. Does anybody know if the knightfall/knightfall 66 are ok with active basses? I play a stngray, and I play mostly hard rock and metal. The other pedal I'm looking at is the vt bass. I know I can get this sound using the vt - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_ONEaEg5JI. I'm also fairly sure this pedal can get rhcp sounds too if I need. So do I get the vt or could a version of the knightfall do a better job?
6. Oh, forgot - spector 5 strings are beautiful and sound really mean!
7. Congrats man that is a beautiful instrument. Love the aggression of 2eq 'rays!
8. Personally I much prefer a thinner body on these types of basses, I think it produces a better sound. That being the case I'd go for either the warwick star bass or hofner verithin bass, possibly the new coronado.
9. See the nate mendel sig is so close - sd qp's and badass bridge are killer, nice shallow neck and great colour. But why the roadworn finish? Hate roadworn finishes anyway, but this is particularly bad - if you're going to do it, do it properly! Taking a great bass then beating it up because you don't like the look of a new bass - let the buyer beat it up if he loves the look so much ffs!
10. Fair point. Love am. special p basses, think I prefer them over the am. standards.
11. Money no object it would be the 50th anniversary. In the real world - the american standard plays nice but I like car and mystic red is too flake-heavy, not at all keen on the am deluxe, like the american special but prefer the p bass version. I'd probably go for artist series - geddy - or the classic 70s.
12. Why is it unhip? I suppose I'm more the type who likes a bit of tonal variety, but if I decide that the only tone I'll need is a 'ray then I'd get the 5h for the extra string. Tried the am deluxe jazz v - I like fenders but didn't like that at all. Looks and feel beautiful, but the passive tone is poor and I wasn't blown away by the active circuit. Haven't tried a G&L 5 string but would be severely tempted. I get the impression the 1605 would be epic for metal. The ONLY thing didn't like was the matte finish to the body, but everything else was spot on!
13. stingray 5h (honeyburst if you ask me) are great basses, but what really surprised me was the Ibanez sr 1605. Never considered myself an Ibanez fan, but that thing sounds ridonculous! I very nearly bought the 4 string version, but the finish to the neck and ash body on my 4hh ended up winning.
14. I know what you mean about that SG itch - trouble is I'm not a fan of the faded finish, and while it looks great the price difference for the heritage finish is bonkers - plus it's nitro which is a nightmare to look after
15. Nice one thanks! Can't wait to be able to hit that sound - play a stingray hh so will be making some interesting sounds!
16. If I'm considering the regular vt bass to achieve this sound - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_ONEaEg5JI - is it a no-brainer to go for the di for its extra features?
17. So for ratm vt's the way to go?
18.
OKKO Basstard, which is great for fat heavily distorted sounds. I would probably keep this regardless. I use this in the RATM and RHCP bands.
How good is at achieving ratm sounds in particular? I've been considering the vt bass to be able to get that sound - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_ONEaEg5JI - but do you think the basstard could do a better job?
19. vt bass is looking like a green light - can nail tim commerford's tone spot on with that! with that being a vintage-sounding pedal, should I still go for a muff fuzz? Or should I go for something more modern sounding like a tafm and balance it?
20. Thinking of pulling the trigger on the vt bass, hoping to try it out within a couple of weeks
21. Well from that sounds f that I'll have to go after the new graphic! Would that pedal sound ok with a stingray?
22.
This. The one with the newer graphic.
Is the newer graphic one better?
23. Catalinbread SFT.
24. Loving the 'driven punk' sound on this clip of the markbass tube marker - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7tTXLUDQLY
25. Hi Guys Was wondering if you could offer me some advice. I've just bought a stingray (my baby!). My other bass is an Epi T-bird classic pro, I've had that a couple of years and had been seriously considering some pedals to use with it. However I now have an active bass with a very different sound. Stingrays are known for their 'zingy' sound, but with the hh that's just one setting - i can also get sounds similar to a precision and a lot like a jazz bass. Currently I play rock, moving between indie rock, classic rock, and heavy rock/metal. I'm looking at a number of fuzzes - the musket, the tfr, the bat pharoah, the bat lstr, and the fairfield four eyes. Does anybody out there have any experience with any of these pedals with a stingray? I've been told that even with a bright bass you can still get lost in the mix when using a muff fuzz, which is why I'm slightly favouring the musket over the tfr. I had been looking at getting a diamond bass comp to use with my thunderbird - to add smoothness and punch. Now however I have a bass that can be bright and cut through, or have a defined punch, or have a warmer sound depending on what I choose. Should I still be considering compressors focused on tone enhancing, or should I start looking at compressors that are good as limiters and even out string and note volume? In a couple of week time, I'm hopefully going to get to try out some interesting stuff - namely the darkglass b3k, b7k, vmt & vmt deluxe, the 3leaf enabler and you're doom, Xotic BB preamp and the ebs multidrive. I know that's a lot of pedals! Is it even worthwhile looking at preamp pedals? I never use the eq on my amp, but I have a good onboard one on my 'ray. What do you think? Apologies for waffling so much, didn't intend on this being so long Any help would be much appreciated!
