1.
Unless you are a committed ceramic magnet fan I would definitely recommend going for neo loaded cabs, especially if considering 212 or 410 as they are much lighter to move around.
I know, but I can't afford the Bergantino CN212. If I could, I'd probably have gone out and bought one already. I know barefaced are good and light, but it really annoys me that they don't have inset handles. What about the gk neo 212? I could buy one, then could get a second and stack for big gigs in the future? *EDIT* I don't think a 4x10 would be too much actually, I don't always have to have everything turned up to 11.
2. Well to explan the situation fully, my dad is retiring and hasd very selflessly decided to buy a new amp rig for both of us to use. He occasionally jams with friends, whereas I'm in bands that gig regularly. His idea was to buy the rig for the both of us to use, with him unlikely to ever gig, then long term I use it. At the time this was suggested I wasn't earning so couldn't upgrade my amp/cab by myself. Now however I am, just. We were going to buy the lm tube with 1 traveler 121, then I'd buy a second traveler for larger gigs. But now he's decided that he wants a traveler 151, which changes things. Would I be better off with the bergantino hd 212, does it shift less air?
3. My stingray needs an MOT, inc. adjusting the action and cleaning. It has a gunstock oil finish neck. Can anybody recommend a good luthier that isn't a million miles away (I live in Warrington)?
4. Well the problem is I'll be playing a mixture of smaller and larger gigs, and whichever cab I get will have to do it all.
5. I've set my sights on a markbass little mark tube 500w version, think it sounds fantastic! Now I just need to sort out a cab. To date these are the cabs in contention: - Bergantino HD 212 - Makrbass 104HF - GK Neo 410 - Ampeg SVT 410 The HD 212 is the top of my budget I think, heard good things about the CN212 but can't afford it. I play all kinds of rock, from bluesy and classic to heavy and grunge. I play a stingray hh. I believe the HD 212 has a really big low end, not sure if I need this with the stingray's already-big low end. The same can be said for the SVT. Also, I've heard people say the Markbass 104HF is a good cab but not suited for rock. So what do you think? Which of these would sound good for rock, and sound good with the markbass amp head? Which one would you get? Are there any other amps I should consider? Thanks
6. Well if that's the case that changes a lot yeah. I asked on talkbass had anyone measure the total output, but someone said no because they couldn't agree how to...
7. Hmm, Interesting *strokes cat*
8. The problem is nobody's tested one to find out what the total output. The berg hd212 is a dram cab but I don't know if the veyron would fry it
9. A lot of people are talking about this amp head on talkbass, so I googled it and was blown away by the price! This amp head has 2000w peak output (they don't provide a total output figure) which is far more than I'd ever need, but I suppose I can always just turn down The only thing holding me back was the cab side of things. There are two cabs that have been designed to be used with this head - a 1x15 and a 2x10 - but they're both a tiny size. Bugera do make a 4x10 but it's a 2800w cab. I said this on talkbass and a guy responded "Having a big cabinet doesn't improve dispersion, if anything it makes it worse". I just feel slightly uneasy with such a small cabinet - either you place it on the floor and play to people's feet, or place it on a table which looks silly and you lose the bottom end. So what do you guys think? Would you place it on the floor or have it raised?
10. Nice, I was looking at these. Ideally I'd like to try one first, but my local music shop said they'd only be in around June I know tc cabs are designed to be stacked vertically but I'd be terrified of it falling over, I'd be tempted to get two of these and stack them horizontally.
11. I love my epi t-bird classic pro; essentially a gibson without the logo and £1000 less. Even though the price is crazy, I'd love a new 2015 t-bird, with the updated pickups, switches and bridge!
12.
What Stingray do you have?
I have a 4hh, it's a keeper for life. Not saying I won't buy another bass though
13. I've been lusting after a 55-01 with fat stacks and an obp-3! I play a stingray, and looking for something a bit meatier. May well go for a p bass but tried an Ibanez with Big Singles which I loved, then tried the fat stacks and properly loved them! Sorry I was of no help lol
14. Thanks man. Well I was thinking of using it with my stingray, I'd like the sound to be a little warmer and richer. But then I think I'd be using something like a vt di for always-on light hair, and possibly heavier overdrive.
15. Sorry my mistake, for some reason I thought you were talking about the am special. That's a toughie - am. standard or am special with aguilar pickup, maybe upgraded bridge.
16.
I have the AG4-P60 that sometimes lives in my Nate Mendel (although not at the minute as I switched it out for the quarter pounder for a fuzz pedal demo video). It's a great pickup and worth every penny. Like Andy said, really open and not brash at all. Has loads of vintage character and as someone who thinks that the pickups in Am Specials lack character (like the OP), I think you'd really like the Aguilar pickup. If you buy it and don't like it, it'll be gone in NO time if you put it up for sale on here!
Did you keep the greasebucket with the aggie pickup?
17.
Depends which compressor and how it's set up. Generally I don't like them much but I really rate the Diamond one (but it's big money). Very 'musical' and sounds nice without coming across as an 'effect'. Paul Turner uses one and he really doesn't like compressors Just bought a Demeter to try out as an alternative but haven't had time to really use it properly yet.
Do you use it with anything else? I hear people raving about this thing, but I'd be using it alongside an overdrive. Worth it?
18. The aguilar is in the f bass vf-p, if you haven't already maybe listen to some clips of that. I think my next bass will be a p bass, either an america standard or an american special with this aguilar pickup. Personally I'd go for the Aggie.
19. Congrats stunning bass! Yet to play a bass with fanned frets, but so long as I get on with them think I might have to get one of these!
20. Got really bad pedal envy lol, lusting after one of those
21. I'm more conviunced about the muff fuzz after seeing this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkcAZw1SUv0 I think the tall font russian might be the way to go
22. Thanks. It's funny, I actually like the b3k. It's a shame that I can't find any clips of a muff fuzz being used with a stingray bass. I quite like the wren & cuff tfr. What about something like the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh Supreme, I think that has a few settings. Also a few guys on talkbass are suggesting the Prunes & Custard for songs like uprising and starlight - what do you think? Is it ok with active basses. I've found a sound I like for song 2, they guy was using a sansamp rbi with the drive on full and it sounded great. Think I might get a vt bass di when I can afford one.
23. Yeah the b3k's good for the likes of hysteria. What about Song 2?
24. I know there is already a tonne of these threads on talkbass already, but this is regarding use with an active bass. I'm joining a band who play a lot of muse, as well as songs like Song 2 by Blur. I know chirs wolstenholme uses a muff fuzz, but I don't think it's aggressive enough. Maybe a germanium or diode fuzz. What do you think? Does prunes & custard do alright with active bass? What about BAT pharaoh? Or maybe an overdrive - b7k?
