1.
Yup, that'll be a Di Marzio P - the pole pieces were indeed adjustable. Some Oriental manufacturers cloned the design for their models soon after but I'll bet yours was the original USA Di M as it was one of the first after-market, readily available parts to set folks on the road to 'modding'.
Fantastic! Thank you Doctor! - It certainly had a big fat tone and I was thinking about trying one in my CIJ 70's reissue - but wanted to see if it were possible to narrow it down to possible manufacturers. That's sorted that tonal ailment... Now, about this medication I'm taking.....
2.
Dood, Thanks for the reply and info - I'm a little out of touch with gear updates since the band were active back in the 90s - so I'm playing catch up a bit. I will check out the GForce/G Major and see what it does. The 1128 is an awesome peice of kit - completely studio quality - noiseless and with loads of clever bits (like a room eq measuring system with white noise (that it generates itself) and also a feedback kill facility - great for acoustic instrument miking. But for me it was the ability to switch effortlessly from my active 6 string to the passive (and microphonic) chapman stick live on stage with no need to turn around and start fiddling with knobs and dials. I don't know why it's been discontinued - used to be a time that every studio in the land had one! However, it doesn't have a dedicated footswitch - so I've been using a "Ground Control" - which is a brilliant footpedal controller with a huge clear display. It links via a powered midi cable back to a single u rack unit that then distributes patch change info to the rest of the rack and has an 8x8 programmable effects loop matrix for outboard gear. I also have a couple of mega rare TC footpedal phasers (one for guitar, the other bass/keyboard - the difference being that they phase different frequencies). I have the guitar one rackmounted but the other is still a footpedal. I've never found anything that makes the same sound and they're an integral part of my stick sound now, but if TC have an all singing all dancing rack mount unit that can mimmick them I'd be sold! Where abouts are you based? - I looked up predator country in google and it thinks I'm looking for Toxteth!
I’ve just been reading the manual for the 1128. It’s quite a piece of gear isn’t it? I love the idea of being able to use RTA functions to flat response the amplification side of things, akin to a PA set up. I’ve never tried it with my set up – but it would be fun to see what effect it has on my ‘perceived gear tone happiness rating’ lol! I can really see how the feedback killer function would be helpful with the chapman stick and as you say, being able to switch from eq curve to eq curve seamlessly without having to faff with 30 sliders! The ability to control the unit itself by MIDI looks like a god send too! – In comparison, the Gforce and GMajor do not have such an expansive equalizer – yet the 5 band parametric of the GForce or the 3 band para of the GMajor still allow some great control over the eq response curve. I like that it is possible to control the width of the eq bands as well – so any hot spots can be nipped but it’s also possible to do gaping mid scoops as well – just for fun! I must admit, I haven’t looked in to the Phaser effects on the TC as much as some of the other effects – but I know a lot of parameters can be edited per effect block (far more so than a standard pedal.) The Gforce has the additional functionality of being able to add external modifiers, such as dual LFO, pitch detection, envelope detection to individual effect parameters. Too much to explain, but you can do mental things like having the pitch of your notes control the speed of echos – or having the instrument envelope control echo tails or chorus speed! Well, it’s Predator Country – or rather where Predator’s come to convalesce – because Norfolk shop windows are bifocal and all cars come with walking frame holders as standard. Chapman Stick? I doth my cap sir! I would love one, such a beautiful sound!
3. Hi everyone! Quick question for you all - I used to own a Fender P Bass of the late 60's variety. The pickup had been replaced with one with the afore mentioned polepieces that had allen key err 'holes' in. I can't remember if the poles were actually adjustable as it was so long ago, so no idea if it was just for show. Now, the only pickup I can think of that had said styled pole pieces is a Dimarzio. Does anyone know of any other brands that use the same?
4. Infact, cut to the chase - why not just go for the TC Electronic RH450 head? My bass cabinets are active and therefore I don't need an amplifer as such - but if I were using passive cabinets still, then the RH450 would be a no brainer. (Dan now wonders why he sold his Epifani UL-610!!!)
5. Woh! Welcome to my world!! I think we'll probably be chatting some more about this thread offline! I have a similar 'method' to my bass gear too. I've always been a big fan of TC Electronic rack gear. At the moment I am running the C300 multiband compressor into a G Major 2. In the past I ran a Triple-C into my old GForce rack. I control as much as I can via MIDI - or use the external controllers on the GMajor to switch devices (such as amp channels or effects pedals) Therefore my recommendation, to be able control your compression, input levels and EQ (along with effects) would defintely be the GMajor 2 if you need external switching - or if you can pick one up cheap, the GForce. It may be an older effects unit now - but they still wee all over the competition in the majority of cases. It really didn't surprise me that the TC RH450 was such a hit - TC make great well thought out gear I feel. Oh! and on the subject of the TC - I asked them if they would release a 1u preamp version of the RH450 - which I think, for you and me would pretty much be the perfect compliment to our gear! I digress - back to your question! My G Major 2 provides all of my EQ, shaping and additional compression along with effects. Individual patches are selected using a roland foot controller - (or could be externally sequenced - but thats for another day.) The C300 is currently a 'set and leave' all capturing compression just to tidy things up. - I own a line6 X3 - and as much as I love recording with it - I keep coming back to my TC rack instead. p.s. I didnt even know that the 1128 existed! - I've just managed to locate my old Alesis programmeable EQ - and hopefully it's coming back home soon- it seems to pretty much do the same as the 1128 minus the extras. So I'm pretty happy about that! Dood.
6. I'd say set the mids and distortion to what you like, then boost them both a little bit more to cut through the mix. Dave Meros told me to do it that way once!
7.
I've had this preamp for a while now, and its great. It has two sections, valve and SS, and the option to use either or combine. I've been combining, but have just been messing with rigging a footswitch for it, and realised that the single options don't work. The lights change, but the valve stage is always audible. Switching channel basically makes no difference. Where could it be wrong? Not just switching with the footswitch, but using the front panel button. Not really sure where to go with it.
Which Tmax are we refering to?
8.
If you dont like the mid scoop of the sansamp i think you'll find the MXR in the same boat tone wise. I happen to love it, but it does remove mids!
I have to disagree on that one - the BDDI and M80 are completely different beasts. The colur option on the M80 boosts the bass quite heavily, maybe giving the illusion of a scoop - but I think the BDDI has a habit of making all bass sound the same - therefore - I would vote the M80 for tonal options.
9. Al, An idea that I have been contemplating for a long while would be to take a guitar pedal - have the above mods available as switchable options, then have the ability to mix in a dry low pass (adjustable) bass signal. This would allow the correct amount of bass signal in to the dirty mix. To better explain it, if the dirty signal came down to say 200Hz, you could mix in a low pass dry bass signal that would slightly overlap. This would mean the dirty signal wont be muddy and the bottom end will remain tight and focussed - not flabby and undefined (like the BDDI on high drive seetings for example.) Obviously if you wanted to mix the whole bass signal in, then wind the low pass all the way open so that there is no filtering. Does that kinda make sense?
10. I owned a Powersoft D2004. !000W RMS per channel. It is by far the best power amp I have ever used for endless power and headroom. If you read up on some of the big PA forums, you'll find that the Powersoft kit rates easily at the top for driving huge subs, but at the same time able to drive tops and mds with the same little effort - especially as they are so light and a 1u rack. They will fit in a standard length Gator rack case with the lids on. Pricey - but you get what you pay for. (I have a/b'd in rigs with other power amplifiers)
11. One or two of us here own one of those fine Jazz Bass Specials, me included. Awesome bass!
12. I think it's a brillaint idea, if it works as they describe, however:
It’s like switching amps in the middle of the set.
errrr.... yes - if you have an electric screwdriver and time to pop the back off your sealed 4x12 to naff about with the controls! Fine for an open back combo, maybe - but I think for everyone else it'd have to be a 'set and forget' - which seems a bit pointless.
13. I'd been looking for an upgrade for my PDA 'phone recently and am so happy to have found this from the makers of..errr.. that fine pebble and bag device... Teleportation Tweak! Awesome! Wow! Dynamic! A Must Buy! POW! Kazaaaaam! http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina60.htm
14.
Could this speaker cable be referred to as being coaxial? http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/33-250_CANFORD-HPS-CABLE
Yes, it is but it's unusual for a Speaker Cable to be coax - I guess the insulators are designed to take the higher current? The strands themselves look certainly much heavier than instrument cable. Also confusing that they say that the cable has been designed to fit all XLR connectors. I realise some *old* amps used XLR as a method of connection - but standards would suggest that XLR is reserved for balanced mic or live level signals. Being as this cable certainly isnt 'balanced' capable, nor is it adequately shielded - I really cant see it being helpful if it is plugged in to a mic channel of a PA! Anyone who has used a speaker cable for an instrument lead will know what I mean - especially guitarists of the high gain variety! So confusing people using the 'wrong' connectors with the wrong cable is - well daft in my opinion.
15. I am a big fan of Buckeye Burl - and this is yet another example of pure beauty! Jon's work is always stunning and this little peach is no exception! Congratulations!
16.
For all you home recording MarkBass fans...... Just downloaded this (demo version) and have been messing about with it for the last hour - lots of fun !!! Makes me wanna go check out some real MarkBass gear and if the people at Aguilar and Mesa are considering following the Ampeg and now MarkBas example...... http://www.markbass.it/products.php?lingua...t=5&vedi=93 Enjoy!
I love Ampeg SVX - I keep coming back to it for getting a great tone quickly. I haven't tried the MarkBass plug in yet - but if it is as good as SVX - it'll alos be worth every penny.
17. Ahhh! I am a bit of an HTC fan! I've been using their PDA handsets for years now and am lookin' forward to getting my hands on the new HD2 - Maybe I'll have Mr Shuker spray up the covers to match my two Shuker basses - Birdseye maple front and flip paint rear!
18. I love all this tastey new gear arriving! It's that NAMM time of year that I enjoy so much! ;o) I like the look of this one! ESPECIALLY the additional power amplifier. That's just a brilliant idea! Well done SWR!
19. TC Electronic C300. Pick 'em up for around 100 quid now - and easily the best compressor I have ever used - simply because TC, much like with their Bass range - have tailored everything you need with a basic set of 'programs'. Spin the dial to 'Bass Guitar' and it configures the multiband compressor to the best parameters for the instrument. Same for vocals - male and female, drums, percussion, wind instruments - the lot! and if that wasnt great enough, you get two units in one 1u rack ) The unit also does full band, Parallel Compression AND noise gate / Expander functions too. I've owned the likes of the EBS Multicomp, Alesis 3630, Behringer, Autocom etc - and this one - well - after a time out of my rack system, it's right back in again!!! You'll also be interested to hear - it's the same multiband compression in the RH450 head - but more control over fine tweaking of threshold and ratio.
20. Ok, Slightly spurred on by the thread of a similar name. I'd like to know why some cabinet designers / manufacturers build 4x10 cabinets featuring two chambers, each with 2x10" speakers in - and others prefer 4x10" in one chamber. Moving on from that idea - Why similar with 8x10 cabinets that have 4 chambers instead of say, two?
21.
why would you need EZ drummer when you have thomas lang? Lolz oj. Sounds like it's a great songwriting tool though. It's a nice touch to be able to make good sounding results quickly. I was thinking of doing a similar thing myself so i didn't have to buy a load of drum recording gear for demos, plus i'm not exactly TL on the drums either
Well TL *is* great - but I write all of his drum parts for him.. Next week , I'm teaching him compound time sigs ) - I jest of course. Yes, we use it for writing songs. For really quick demos, being a Roland endorser - Thomas will beat out some lines on his Vdrums straight down to MIDI (triggering Superior for example) - then mail over the MIDI file, which we then play back with exactly the same Superior kit. It's very fast and great for roughing out ideas. Thomas lives in the US, so it's not really easy to pop round for a coffee and jam! lol!
22. and works on bass, they say!
Tuning used to be a necessary evil. The last barrier before you could get truly rocking. But now, tuning is ready to get blasted into the 21st century with PolyTune, the stomp-box sized tuning miracle from TC Electronic! PolyTune is the world's first polyphonic tuner, and a game-changing total tuning turnaround that will have future guitarists wondering how we ever got by without it. It couldn't be done - until we did it. The magic lies in a never before seen approach to tuning aimed at speed, accuracy and ease of use. With PolyTune, you simply strum all strings on your guitar or bass at once, and it will immediately tell you which strings need tuning! This cutting-edge tuning technology revolutionizes the way you tune and accomplishes what has been deemed 'impossible' until now: tuning all strings simultaneously! It really is as simple as strum - tune - rock, and this quantum leap forward allows you to get in tune fast, and back to doing what you love: playing.
The official page is here.. 23. My band, within The Void, have an artist deal with Toontrack - and have been using Superior 2 (the newer EZ Drummer package) - and all of us think it is brilliant. I love slapping down a loop in my DAW and jamming to it too. The more realistic drums (and the infinte editing of S2) makes the whole experience far more enjoyable.. Especially when coming up with new song ideas. I get the toontrack newsletter through - and it's interesting to see how many artists have had chart releases with their products taking up the rhythm section job!
24. Yeah, I got a good one - nothing special - but it looks good on stage. I used to be in a band where the singer was (and still is) a crackin' bass player too. We used to play a song that featured a second guitar harmony - but we had just the one guitarist - So, when the part of the song came along - my singer would reach over and play the bass line and chords on my bottom 3 strings - I'd play the harmony lead guitar part on the top three, leaving the guitarist to take the main solo part. I think it sounded great! Though I also think it was wasted on the audiences, as are many musical devices, such a crazy jumbled up compound time sigs!
25. Hmmmm - I'd like to hear the two - but as far as I can tell on the likes of You Tube, the Para driver seems to have a lot more distortion gain than the BDDI. Am I wrong? I was seriously thinking about buying the RPM (the rack version of the Para Driver) - but if there's not much difference, then it'd be a waste of time - as I don't personally like the type of drive available from the BDDI - I think it disturbs the bottom end and makes it woolly. Your thoughts greatly received!
