Deaconification Pt3? - John Deacon "Magic Era" Precision project

I am a big fan of Gotoh hardware! The GB(R)640 res-o-lite tuning keys are just brilliant. I've asked Gotoh to make FB30 res-o-lites but they have said there are no plans to do so. Which is a shame given the amount of basses that use that tuning key design!- 18 replies

Guitar / Bass building courses - any recommendations?
Dood replied to Jolltax's topic in Repairs and Technical
I absolutely 100% recommend the Shuker courses! One of my bass students has recently come back from the course too having made his own bass. I can honestly say (as a professional gear reviewer) his bass sounds amazing! It's been beautifully finished with Jon Shuker's help and it certainly is something to be proud of! That aside, as Geoham says, I know from experience that other Luthiers hold Jon in high esteem, understandable given the quality of his workmanship. Tell him what you need and he'll have the best advice about how to get there! -

It is fair to say that my Tokai doesn't have a few of the foibles that my 70's P does! Although I swapped out the tuning keys, the original Tokai ones, even at this age were SO smooth in operation!! I have a feeling they could have been Gotoh made.- 18 replies

It's supposed to be 1981, but frankly its stock model seemed to be late 1980 to my mind. Hmm, good question! The sticker that you'd usually find on the neck was missing, but I have a funny feeling it's something like "PB40". I chose it specifically because its a model with a Sen body (Japanese Ash) and of course has a true "lawsuit era" headstock, which is near indistinguishable from my actual P bass on stage. Because frankly I wanted my old black P bass back and this was the nearest thing I could get. Turns out, these Tokai basses are incredible and mine isn't exactly an exemplary example. It has been loved in the past! Somewhere online you can view all the old Tokai catalogues and honestly, I poured over those for hours trying to find the right model for the job - then, it turned out that my now friend who lives in Japan (where I bought my Aria Pro II law-suit era P from) had one in his collection!! Exactly what I was looking for too!- 18 replies

There's plenty of options and sometimes it can be down to taste as every cabinet sounds different. They play a much larger part in the overall tone especially when we are dealing with say, amplifiers that are. supposed to be 'flat and uncoloured' as an example. What tone are you after? Something really baked in or are you wanting a more FRFR style experience? My recommendations would be what works for me live with the rest of my signal chain and might not fit what you are after. I'll help where possible though! I'm a HUGE fan of the Bergantino 12" ceramics I have at the moment, but I've used all sorts including stacks of Hartke 4.5XLs (when my back still liked me ha ha!) If you are wanting to stick with EBS for a matching rig, each of the three models of cabinets they sell bring their own points to the table. When I reviewed the Reidmar 750, I was sent a 4x10 classic. It was so loud the technical team upstairs from the soundproofed studio heard us. Interestingly, many years ago when I first fell in love with the TD650, it was paired with two Aguilar GS212 cabinets. A sound I would dearly love to hear again.

The HD350 is a great amplifier! I've had the pleasure of reviewing most of the EBS amplifier range and there are certainly a few that particularly stick out as favourites, but you can't really go wrong with any of them. In fact, I have two sat here right now that I am reviewing for Bass Gear Magazine! So, keep your eyes peeled for those reviews. The TD650 was in my top five amps of all time for many years and it only recently got bumped down the queue recently by none other than the 802. That is a wonderful piece of engineering! Congratulations with the purchase, they sound great turned up!

The PB70 US has a 40mm nut. I'm not sure what sort of size that is supposed to be described as. "A +1/2"? For comparison, the Mike Dirnt and Steve Harris sig basses both has a 41mm nut. I chose them as they are based on 70's basses.

Oh and the Tokai? I am lucky enough to have a real P bass too and, well, the Tokai is superb! For less than a third of the price (it needs a fret job though) so one hell of a snag in my book.- 18 replies

Finally! Up on the Dood Towers casting couch, the Magic Era precision tribute. Yes, there's certain things I haven't done. I have neither the Schaller 3D bridge or the Schaller tuning keys. The bridge still may happen, but I actually prefer the Gotoh FB30 tuners as they are the same shape as the pre 76 (Nickel) tuning keys that I have on my own 76 P bass. EMG GZR Geezer Butler pickup in there to has a nice top end clank to the sound.- 18 replies

I hadn't spotted this post previous. I have a QC here on my desk. It's hopefully going to be gigging again soon! The latest update (I think) included a feature that I was really missing after having the Helix many years. I love the form factor, touch screen and 'multi-function' foot switches. It suits my needs and sounds superb.

Yes, thank you itu, they are solder pads. They’re not too small, but yes a good iron tip will certainly help!. The board itself is about 26mm x 30mm The board depth as indicated by the markers in the diagram is around 23mm. The thread is around 9mm and the knob shaft also 9mm. Hope this helps! oh and a battery clip as well as an output jack comes fitted as standard. Strangely not mentioned in the spiel.

Onboard preamp 2-band stacked version: The GLOCKENKLANG 2-band onboard preamp is active/passive switchable (at the volume push/pull), has a balance-pot with no volume dip in center-position, a treble-pot with +/- 18 dB@18 KHz in active mode, acting as classical highcut in passive mode and a bass-pot with +/- 14 dB@40 Hz. Battery-connection is 9 volts. Due to the high performance electronic, in flat position of the eq you can hear no difference between active and passive mode! It comes pre-wired with highflexible cables. Bass and Treble stacked pot WITH BLACK KNOBS INCLUDED!! The knobs for these are pretty pricey, so I have saved you the cost. Shipping will be tracked and insured so I'd appreciate a few quid being chucked my way for mainland UK shipping. Further afield we'll need to figure out. The preamplifier has been used, but cabling hasn't been cut short. An exceptional pre! https://www.glockenklang.de/en/products/products_bass.htm Connection diagrams and schematics are available clearly on the website thankfully too - So I'll not worry about pasting that in the advert. Technical Data: Gain: 1 (0 dB) Input-impedance (without Balance): 1,5 MOhm Frequency range: 20 Hz -20 KHz Bass: +/- 14 dB@40 Hz Treble: +/- 18 dB@18 KHz Power requirement: 9/18 volts/1,3 mA Min. installation depth: 28 mm (1.1")

Fed up with issues with pickups of differing output not blending well with a standard passive blend control? Fear not! Not only can you set the levels of the individual pickups, the active blend means no dead spots and balanced mixing of your bass pickups. Ideal for normal two pickup basses but also where piezo and magnetic elements are concerned. Never used, still in box as it arrived to me. MIXPOT The MixPot 1 is a miniature onboard pickup mixing preamp, mounted to the underside of a balance pot (center click). The preamp allow to combine Piezo and magnetic pickups, two magnetic pickups or two Piezo pickups without any additional outboard signal routing electronics. Two independent channels allow to preset (trimpot) the amount of the boost up to +18dB. You can expect 800 hours of solid operation from a single 9V battery. Adding an additional 9-Volt battery (18V) will ensure more headroom and longer battery life. https://www.noll-electronic.de/bass-electronics/mixpot/ Shipping will be tracked and insured, so I'd appreciate a few quid for it for mainland UK shipping. Further afield, drop me a message and I'll see what the cost would be.
