1. Do we know what interview this was? If not, then I'll ask him in a bit.
2. Paul Turner is a great guy and awesome bass player, but I have to say - unless it has been quoted out of context (I mean I'm sure there is more to his point than that?) I'd have to disagree. In terms of say a bass having pickups or electronics that might favour a B string rather than an E (I.e. the centre frequency of the bass boost, for example) then maybe that would be the case. I'd expect any quality 5 string bass to have a good strong response across all the strings in comparison to an equivalent 4 string. Certainly my pair of Shukers and a new six string I have picked up have a brilliant balance in tone and volume of each of the strings. I'd like to hear more about what he meant.
3. The 14mm string spacing seems ridiculous, but it's 'shredtastic'. String skipping and sweep picking is effortless as well as extended chords and Ellefson style bass lines. I'm pretty chuffed with the range of tones from the bass too. It's very different from my EMG electronics that's for sure. It's a fairly light bass, very well balanced and very well presented straight out the included 'luxury' hard case with an embroided logo on the outside. The bass has a set of Elixir strings on too and comes with all the usual case goodies, so all in all a great bit of kit. I love the ultra light tuning keys and small headstock keeping 'nose diving' to a minimum. Ultimately, it's not a patch on my Shuker 6, but it's going to be a really useable second bass - until such times as I have a Shuker 6 string ... with a 14mm spacing!!
4. And another whilst I was reviewing gear for iGuitar Magazine.
5. My ugly mug whilst working at LickLibrary last week.
6. Ha ha!! That's really funny! Bless 'em! - I don't want to derail the thread , so Dave, if you could send me a PM / screen print of the offending search box you mean then I will let them know! When I say 'know' I mean berate them seriously for not knowing how to spell the name of the most important instrument on the planet ;o)
7.
Dood, Take a look at just about any daily newspaper website to see how to deliver a publication in a manner better suited to the web. You get the same information as in the printed edition, but one version has been laid out to work best on paper and the other designed to be viewed on-screen. The delivery system used by iGuitarMag and every other musical instrument magazine that I've seen on-line are ones which have been created to allow publishers of printed magazines quickly and easily re-purpose them to deliver via the internet. However if your publication doesn't have a physical printed version then there's no reason to be constrained by things like fixed page size for instance when these things become irrelevant when there is no longer a physical page. Also once you stop using these types of delivery system and build your magazine using normal web standards you no longer have to worry about having to create a separate version for iPads etc. I could go on more, but since working on stuff like this is part of how I make my living I don't want to give away all my knowledge for free. If IGuitarMag or any of the other on-line magazines want to pay me for my consultation and advice then they can PM me via this site.
I can only assume at this point that they haven't had too many complaints from the 100,000+ subscribers (not including those who read the mag but don't subscribe) - I can't answer that, but it's a format that certainly seems to work for those enjoying it, but I'll forward your comments if you wish ;o)
8.
Maybe I'm being dumb but I couldnt find much bass content on that link apart from the spector/dingwall review and a bit about Doug Wimbish ? I'm a web programmer and I didnt think it was all that bad design-wise - perhaps a little too columnar. Id have liked to see it accessed via cascading menus to make it less busy. Audio coming out of your browser is a big problem for those of us who are reading at lunchtimes at work. Disturbs the other sheep - perhaps your developers could fix this to mute by default? @Dood
Click the button that says 'Read It For Free' - you'll be taken to the full magazine! - There's plenty more to read. Don't forget to subscribe. As for sound - Most newer PC laptops and Macs have a mute button so you can choose for yourself ;o)
9. Ha ha! Yes, it could well have been me actually! It popped up and I grabbed it rather quickly. It's an absolutely 'as new' unit! Nice! I've been using TC effects for a lot of years actually. I've owned the G-Force, G Major 2, Triple-C and C300 as well as the Nova Dynamics compressor I have. The Nova System is no different in the quality of effects as I believe all the same algorithms go in to the processing as well as the choice of processor itself. The delays, choruses and other time based effects are what TC are well known for and are pristine. Pitch shifting and tuning effects are great, though the octaver isn't as far reaching in to the lower octaves as some pedals, such as the EBS Octave - or the octaver on the GT10B which is pretty good too. In use for bass, there are two inputs on the unit. The board includes a really good 'all analogue' over drive and distortion section that I think could be useful, but I have spent less time with that as I use an Ampeg Billy Sheehan preamp to provide my distortions at the moment. Thus, at the first gig I took it out to, I plugged in to the 'line input' on the back that bypasses the analogue section altogether. It was great for bass and noticed no loss in low end at all. Current signal chain is: Shuker 6 & 7 string basses > Ampeg BSP preamp > Hartke Kilo head Pre> TC Nova System in stereo loop > Hartke Kilo 2x500W > 2x Hartke 4.5XL cabs. Potentially enough noise to level a small village and gorgeous stereo effects right behind me ;o)
10. I've just invested in a TC Electronic Nova System. I am really impressed!
11. HEY BRX, Can you show me some examples of the 'online delivery medium' you'd prefer as at the moment I can't really see what the problem is. - But hey, I'm only a reader and bass player, not a web designer!- I'd certainly welcome any improvements that I can pass on to the team. At the moment though, I'd totally disagree with your comment 'Poorly thought out'. I think that is a bit harsh. As for the video interviews. Have you watched the ones in iGuitar? I think you'll be surprised. We've picked bass players who have interesting stories and experiences to share. All of the videos are edited down where necessary. Indeed I spent all morning talking to Doug Wimbish - simply not possible to include everything! ;o) edit: I realise this discussion is actually going Off-Topic thus apologies - maybe better placed in a new topic about online publications.
12. Ha ha ha! Indeed! - Though I have to say, it's so new and shiny, it looks exactly like the pics above!
13. Ok, so months later! I'm pretty pleased to say that I now own one of the first three GVB36 basses to land in the UK. I'll get some pics up soon, but it is a rather tasty bass!!
14. I sold my pair of Hartke Hydrive 112 cabinets to Craig. A flawless and friendly transaction and he was very patient whilst I went to find suitable courier proof packaging to send the cabs on their way! Great stuff! Dood.

16. It'll be in an iPad version soon too: http://www.iguitarmag.com/the-app/
17. I think what would be great is:- * A free to read magazine. * Free video reviews of gear that includes equipment that is in the reaches of the beginner as well as the pro * Video interviews as well as text ones with relevant and current bass players * The magazine isn't too long and just enough items to keep you going month to month - Pedals, amps and basses etc * Maybe a reviewer you know that you can talk directly too? That'd be cool. * Having all the back issues at your disposal (free) without having to take up room in your office / studio * UK based but open to the world market so that any adverts aren't just UK specific, thus making readers aware of a wider range of products - but still, not swathes of advertising bile. Hmmmm.. if *only* such a magazine existed ;o) Check out issue 9 of Guitar Interactive Magazine for free (and all the back issues) over at http://www.iGuitarMag.com. It has a GREAT bass section you can browse directly to and features this really nice guy you all know Dood
18.
I really want to try somethinglike this but in pedal form! I never thought about actually removing the frequencies from the clean and replacing them with the distorted sound. Would this be more beneficial than having certain frequencies overlapping?
Well, yes and no. I guess in some cases, those overlapping frequencies may accentuate the character of the instrument. Like the demo for the Lomenzo drive by James himself, he tunes the mids to sit on the 'bite' of the treble side of his tone. He doesn't push the distortion in to crazy territory either and the effect is very pleasing. I think I overlap mine similarly too, but roll the bottom off the distortion so it isn't mushy and the top off so it isn't fizzy sounding. I think one of the most important functions on such a pedal is the ability to sculpt the clean and distorted tones together. An EQ on both the distortion path and clean path is very important. I wish my M80 had that ability as I find it limiting, unless it goes in the loop of say an EBS Microbass.
19. I've justbtaken delivery of a Hyperdrive but not had a chance to play with it properly yet. My 'band pass' distortion comes in the form of an Ampeg Billy Sheehan bass preamp. It's a hard one to beat as it has a full clean valve preamp and a seperate distortion channel that can be combined. I pull the lows and the highs of the distortion out and tune the mids to slot in the scoop of my clean signal thus giving me a nice rounded fat tone that is nice and distorted too. Clean bottom and top, dirty mids. Slap sounds great through it. It's a rack unit, but i have thought about having a pedal version custom made several times. Its so good, i sold the first unit I had and then had to search to buy another!
20. Wow! Superb! One of my first 'proper' amps was this very same model. Used for years with a huge 2x15 cabinet I was always complimented on my bass tone with a big fat juicy sounding P bass! It looks like new too! Great stuff. Nice trip down memory lane for me.
21. Thank you guys! God I love.... basschat!
22. Indeed, purchase a lead that is described as connecting to the 'line outs' on the apple dock. You'll get a stronger 'direct out' signal. You could, if you wish purchase an audio interface designed to give you a stronger output signal, as well as also including other 'inpit' facilities.
23. I'm afraid I can't help, but on a similar subject (if you don't mind me piggy-backing your thread too) - I'd love to track down the broadcast quality release of Pink Floyd, Live in Venice in 1989. It was originally shown as a TV broadcast - but i'd do anything to hear a stereo version that isn't all gnarly like my old videos were! Maybe a Pink Floyd expert could help us out with both requests.
