Good question! I'm not sure!
Disclaimer: I have not personally tried the TC compressor, though it's on my watch list. I have only good experiences with my TC pedals. Sometimes when people say they found a compressor noisy it could be that adding a compressor amplified existing noise from their other pedals. Just a thought. Tone prints are really cool, and the possibility of setting up your own favourite compressor in the editor is tempting. Could lead to many wasted hours too I guess.
The other thing I noticed that isn't mentioned in the manual is the truly bonkers amount of gain available on the sweep of the level knob. In the app it suggests being able to set up in the order of 50dB. Even if it were just 20, I would challenge even the very best compressors to not amplify signal chain noise. Wind that control round and you will definitely get noise. No fault of the pedal.
This is making me want to try the Hyper Gravity ! Can you have the edit screen open on your computer and use the compressor at the same time to ''live'' test the adjustments ?
Yes yes!! You certainly can!

Seems he's having a bad day! TC Support have been nothing but amazing for me on the over 20 years of using their kit. Honestly. That aside, the HG is a good compressor out of the box but when it really comes in to its own is when paired with the TonePrint app. When I'm not typing on my mobile I'll add more info - but at the moment I would say that under the bonnet there is access to every parameter you can possibly think that you might need and a whole bunch you don't know you need. One of my favourites is the ability to assign the knobs to other parameters than those labelled. Very cool. The triple bands are totally adjustable and you can save your own TonePrints depending on what you are using the pedal for. I've some cool 'valve-like' settings, sub bass boost, hifi comp, old skool fingerstyle, tapping frenzy solo boost and good ole squish sounds. Yeah it's really very good but I didn't use any of the 'default' settings.

If I understand it correctly, a PJB cab with eight 5" cones in is roughly equivalent to a standard 2x10 cabinet in terms of speaker surface area.

I'm pleased with the responses! Indeed, I too have a partner who is totally amazed that I have no idea what some of my favourite songs are about - or even what most of the lyrics actually are! When I am asked why I started playing bass, I tell people that one of the reasons is that I discovered that I hummed bass lines when ever I was singing along to a song. I must have been a weird little boy to listen to ha ha ha!
having watched the Billy Sheehan demo of it I'm blown away by the way it has the dry and wet signal effect loops and comes with TRS Y splitter cable ...the sonic possibilities seem amazing... but It's not a real tube is it? Just a simulation.... hmmmm
Well, it's not a tube simulation at all - it's a distortion pedal. It can provide the very light grit that you are after though. For the lack of tube, in performance or dropped in a recorded mix, you wouldn't tell anyway. I'm not of course suggesting you are wrong - to be honest I really love tubes in the clean signal. Just suggesting an alternative in the absence of a valve solution.
Personally, I'd go for a Zoom MS-60B. Yes, its a multi-fx, but the compressor models are decent and very configurable, and there's no rule that says you can't use it like a single pedal if you want to.
That's a good point - you get more than one 'compressor model' to choose from too which may tickle ya fancy.
The learning curve is steep (same as any CAD I expect), but there's some good pedal-specific tutorial videos on the 'Eagle' sub-forum over on the MadBean forum Si
That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for actually! - I learn stuff fairly quickly when working examples are available, so that's perfect. I've installed the app and will have a play later. MadBean here I go!

Hi Tobie and everyone who has messaged! I do have good news for you. I have managed to secure some boxes that I hope are suitable for shipping both cabinets together. Now, I had received several messages about shipping the cabinets including definite interest in purchasing. So, I have replied to the first person who showed interest originally (first PM message in). I apologise if I have missed any messages coming in, but as I'd mentioned above I hadn't originally planned to ship as it is a bit hectic here still and thus I've not necessarily been on top of messages. -
Eagle is free, assuming you stick to smallish projects, i.e. Not bigger than a PCB that fits in a 1590BB (unlikely) Si
I will seek it out, thank you.

TC Electronic Hyper Gravity is my top spot favourite compressor. About 100 quid I think but essentially you have TC's famed studio triple band compressors in a pedal. Very nice!

Rich reminded me to come here after I asked this question: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/276919-electronic-schematic-design-software-ios-too/page__pid__2954299#entry2954299 I've always enjoyed tinkering with electronics but I've not used computer applications for a very long while! I'm looking to find a great solution for creating schematics, testing them virtually and then going on to creating printed circuit boards. I use a Mac, though if necessary then I'll run software via VMWare if only a Windows version fits the bill. Better still, I love the idea of running an app on my iPad mini! This will mainly be for small pedal sized projects and I'm not expecting to go down to SMT components yet. That said, I have a mad fixation on micro/mini sized effects that fit in a Hammond 1590(???) box, so I might need to look in to that too ha ha!! Look forward to hearing your thoughts as well as finding out who would be up for making one off pedals from scratch.

I bought one of these: http://www.rattleand...CFdEYGwodGlgG7g Super little EQ pedal, but never actually got round to using it as I needed more EQ bands. It's as new but no box. Includes uk postage Image: http://www.altomusic.../GRAPHICB-0.jpg
Early contender for BC Quote of the Year right there
Very unusual for me to come up with anything witty so early in the day. I think I'll pat myself on the back
DOOD. Thanks for that and your constructive response. I do think the gig environment is much a factor in the tone scenario in which I speak of. Placement of cab / Room/ Floor surface its on/ stage size and where I am in relation to it. Its really hard to get these things right at every venue you pass through! But we can only try!
Awww Thank you!I hope it has helped a bit! I can't help feeling that's also a major reason why I am doomed with insufferable G.A.S!!! So... how do we get round these on stage sound imperfections??? In-ears!! Now that's a whole different can of worms!!
Thanks for your response everyone, Firstly I already have a very clean/true sounding bass head the m500 sounds like no other too my ears and I've used the usual ( mark bass , Genz Benz , ampeg and TC). The barefaced cab is nice it's not the issue however just on a few points raised I would say the cab can sound boxy at times and have found this to be where the cab is placed in the room ( like any other bass cab). However to my ears it seems to be more obv with this. Yes mostly my gigs are in tight spaces where my cab is at my knees and I am pretty much standing on it due to floor space so I know this may be an issue. * Going back to the initial point in the post - I'm looking for a cab as a spare and back up , no looking to outshine the BF cab looking for similar in terms of a one cab solution.
Ok this sounds familiar. The BB cabs have much less of a mid dip in the response than many cabinets I have owned. This coupled with firing the sound in to your legs on stage softens the top end further accentuating those mids. Depending on amp settings and cabinet placement your lows possibly receded will not help. The boxy character would suggest a number of things adding up to make one problem.
Some amps just don't "work" with some cabs. I tried a few different ones with my BF Big One so i learned that the hard way...
Yes some combinations are almost counterintuitive tonally. You want a big fat juicy amp tone then buy a cabinet that has the same sonic character but you end up with flubby low end and incoherent top end. Been there, bought the T Shirt...
-
I think all cabs are coloured, I really don't buy into the whole flat response thing, some of the best cabs that I have played have been very "coloured"
I agree too. Completely flat response amps for example can sound bland in comparison unless you are getting your EQ elsewhere. A flat amp with a 'flat' cabinet can sound a bit weak and nasal in some circumstances. I have found that I prefer 'hifi' rather than flat response in nearly all cases. All cabinets are coloured, yup that's a fact. Some more so than others and to great effect I feel.
Hey Dood I haven't over reacted don't worry, I just woke up feeling a little mischievous this morning 😀 Just playing lol
Ooooooh you little monkey

SiPhilips, how do you place your cabinets? Are you able to point it towards your ears or get it up high? Sometimes clarity is lost when we are pushed on to tight stages and we have little choice but to fire the sound out to our knee caps. I was wondering if you were having to do the same? As for lows, I do know the BB2 and PJB (to a point) don't have a baked in 'bump' in the lows. Maybe a cabinet with that could be the way to go? It would sound fuller from a flat EQ setting and pleasing to the ear. A bit like punching in the loudness button on hifi separates! If you can try one - and I haven't checked where you are, the Bergantino CN212 I think might be a nice solution. Or if you were near to me and wanted to stick to BF, I have a barefaced Big Twin II which I think would be stunning.
Absolutely ChrisB I had totally overlooked those things and have now come to my senses... clearly the op needs to learn how to use his amp correctly or even replace his amp altogether for one that is a little more flat response/honest/puts out what you put in/high efficiency/ louder than any other amp for the size and weight, and most importantly can push those very special custom made, top secret, state of the art drivers with unbelievably impressive Xmax and dispersion performance to their limit, it is inconceivable that someone would find a B*******d product not to taste!
I think maybe you've over reacted Ian as no one has started a row but it's a very good point and a place to start. The OP may well not have to buy anything new at all as the issues could be elsewhere. *trying* not buying an amp could help to discover this.
