£1000 What I'm looking at is at a reasonable price so willingly to pass that on and I'm open to reasonable offers. I've decided to keep my 71 Precision but will be parting with my 1983 Precision. It was owned by a collector before me and is in immaculate condition. It has one slight dink on the neck, other than that it looks like it came out the factory yesterday. I have changed the White pick up covers for black, but will supply the originals. I'm looking for something a little more lived, a limelight would be considered. Consider trades for good quality jazz bass

I'm thinking those prices are going to keep on going up too! When I'm old and hanging up my bass this will be worth a small fortune!
-
I thought about the 3leaf wonderlove, and tried 3 lead proton which was a little tame for me and didn't cut through the mix, I just thought that if I'm going to get one, get the best, and it was a toss up between the meatball and mutron, I'd love to get them side by side!
-
Don't get me wrong, I don't think that there is a problem with active basses, the problem is me and active basses! The stingray I had, had a 3 band eq, and 5 options for pick up positions! I'm an habitual tweaker and it would drive me mad, even when I was happy with my sound!!!
-
To be honest, initially I thought that it would be impossible to tame, but after 30 minutes of twiddling knobs and reading through the instructions it all makes sense, I find it to be quite easily tweaked, and not difficult at all, I can get it to do what I want pretty quickly, it's really quite intuitive and just makes sense once you understand what all the dials do..
-
I had the same, stingray HH, just way to many options for a simple bassist like myself, plug and play....ug..

Well, this has now arrived and has been gigged a couple of times. This cost me £300, but it's the sort of thing that's likely to go up in value over the years. This beast takes a little taming, but once tamed it is an absolute beauty. There are plenty of tweakable options and it gives that mutron bootsy funk that I like so much, you can switch between low pass, mid band and high pass filtering, with another four stages of funk within each band, for bass the low pass filter works best and depending on what you want, you can get real sub bass "brown" notes or you can filter a little high for mutron funk, you can hook up additional passive volume pedals to adjust attack and decay mid funk. You can have your funk going up, or down, with down giving more of a phaser thing going off. I've gone through plenty of envelope filters over the years since my first meatball and nothing comes close. The EMMA Discumbobulator was the best until I gave this another go, but the meatball blows it out of the water, it really is a great pedal and has true bypass, I only use two pedals, this and a top quality compressor. It doesn't get used every song by any means, but wow when it does get used! I'm pretty sure that these arnt made anymore, lovetone were a boutique britsh company set up in the 90s that made a number of top quality pedals, they crop up occasionally on basschat and always fetch a premium price.

The early AER amp one's used a heatsink and no fan, these things are immense, mine was a 2008 version, huge portability and a sound that just has no right to come out of a box that size, only down side is that your still looking at about £600 to pick an old one up, that may seem a lot for a 200watt single 10 inch speaker combo, but you won't think so once you've heard it! You get what you pay for..
-
Personally I much prefer the simplicity of a passive bass, put an active bass in my hands and I'm forever twiddling with knobs and never happy, bass up, mid cut, treble boost, bass boost, mid boost, no cut, no boost, no cut, neck pick up, brigde pick up, balanced, neck bridge, neck, bridge, mid cut, bass cut, boost, cut, boost cut, neck, bridge, neck, bridge, mid, bass, treble, boost this, cut that, no, boost, cut, boost, cut...............aaaaaaaggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh That's why I currently have two Precisions and I'm very happy

Does the stage line fit straight in or is there some cutting / filing involved? -
Markbass Mini CMD 121P - simplest of upgrades
chrisanthony1211 replied to alanbass1's topic in Amps and Cabs
Just done this on my CMD121p and agree with everyone that it is quite a noticeable improvement, and a simple and easily reversible upgrade. It make the amp very smooth and totally gets rid of any hiss that it used to produce. Makes you wonder why the tweeter is in there when the 12 inch sounds so good by itself, I've not played it like this at rehersal volume yet but that will come next week! -
Bought a Mark Bass NY121 off Mike today, top bloke, met met half way and even threw in a free cover for my CMD121p. Thanks Mike, deal with confidence.

I had a Peavey Bam 210 and they are an absolutely great sounding combo, ridiculously loud, and the effects on them are really quite good to, I really liked the redhead setting, and if you are lucky enough to have the foot pedal, you have an absolutely great amp. They were very expensive when they first came out (I think about £1200) as they are top of the range top quality combo, and you won't get anything that sounds anywhere near as good for the same money. However! This does come with a compromise, and this is the reason why such a top quality combo is relatively cheap on the second hand market, these things are silly heavy, I'm no wimp and I struggled to get it into my boot, and that was ultimately the reason I sold, if this weight 50lbs less I would never have sold it, I was prepared to pay more for something that sounded as good, but lighter. I've worked my way through several combos over the last 18 months and finally found the power to weight ratio power combo of my dreams! But even this does not sound better than the Bam! It's just 29lbs rather than 96lbs. So this is the question you have to ask yourself, the Bam is a truly top quality combo which is a bargain because it weighs so bloody much, anything else you get for the same price won't sound as good, the Bam is a bit of a hidden gem, these go for about £300 on the second hand market which is just ridiculous for something that sounds so good!

Well I've had a fiddle with my markbass compressore (which I got for xmas!) and I'm mightily happy with it, it uses a valve to get some good quiet compression, and very tweakable, also nicely fattens up the sound and smooths out my sloppy technique!
-
Hi Frank, I'm in the process of doing a deal with a fellow bass chatter at the moment for an NY121, splashing the Xmas cash! I can't help wondering why anyone would sell this rig, I suppose we always want what we haven't got, and never appreciate what we have whilst we have it!
-
Simple question, which do you use, I've always used a straight lead but gonna live life on the edge and get me one with a cheeky right angle on it!!! Is it purely a matter of aesthetics or is there a good reason for both?

Bloody good, I'm very impressed with this little beast,, louder than my amp one and the sound carries much better, unlike the AER where it is just impossible to get a bad sound out of it, this takes some knob twiddling to get the sound i wanted, It's the same weight as the amp one but just a little bigger. My plan is the 121p on its own for small gigs and rehersal, and I shall definately be getting the ny121 extension cab for bigger gigs. I've got the markbass compressore for Christmas with its valve doing the compressing so I'm looking forward to how that sounds. I've got through plenty of amps in my time, but this is definately the best all round package for quality of sound and power to weight ratio. The AER was the best option for a lightweight rig until I tried this. The biggest problem with the Amp one is that any extension cabinet needs to be powered, this obviously increases the cost of things quite a bit, whereas I can pick up a second hand ny121 for about £250 and I've got the perfect mini rig of doom. I had an orange TB500c combo before this which I really liked, but the Orange was twice the weight and no louder and could sound a little muddy with the eq actually doing little to affect the sound, I've said this before in the last 12 months, but I don't think I'll be swapping this for a while! I'm very impressed with this offering from markbass, can't wait to get the extension can. And brass monkey was a great gig loved it, and they loved the funk!

I did think that reliced basses looked pretty good, however I now have a couple of vintage precisions, an 83 and a 71, the 71 I managed to pick up for less than 1k which I'm really pleased about, for me, one of the reasons after all the basses I have owned, that I now have 2 vintage Precisions, is that they are just about the only basses which will go up in value, you buy anything else and you lose money as soon as you leave the shop, the first time you get a dink, you're really pissed and you've just lost even more cash, my 71 is in pretty good nick, but I'm not concerned about the occasional knock, it's still going up in value! And it's not necessarily because of any mojo (although there is plenty!) it's because it's an antique, just like an antique chair may be worth more than a new chair that looks the same, and even though it may not be as good, it's an antique, and it deserves to be worth more for having survived ! these reliced guitars fit a niche, I can understand where they fit, but I can't say I've ever looked at one and thought "there's a vintage fender", I always thought that "someone's had a right good go at that!"

Pick up foam on vintage Precision
chrisanthony1211 replied to chrisanthony1211's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for the advice, I shall do some web trawling to find me some decent replacement foam. -
The foam under the pickups on my 71 precision are pretty much knackered! I currently have a new brass plate under the pick ups with new foam, my question is whether I would reduce the value of this bass if I was to take the old foam off the old plate which I have stashed away, put some new foam on and put the original pick up plate back in? I don't like doing anything to a vintage bass but it appears to me that this may be an exception if the foam has perished! Advice much appreciated.

I've had this a couple of weeks now, and rehersal twice, and I'm mightiy impressed with this little amp. It's a similar weight to my AER amp one but obviously a little bigger having the 12 inch speaker. The amp one is definitely better at producing those low notes, and it doesn't really matter what you do with the eq, it just always sounds great! Whereas with the Mark bass I find it requires a lot more twiddling of knobs to get the desired sounds, and definately need to drop those high mids a little to stop it sounding a little honky! First gig with it tonight (mad Friday!) at brass monkey in Nottingham for its first real test!
