1. That is very very very pretty, one of the great things about relics or old basses is that the occasional ding doesn't send you into a total tail spin, imagine getting a ding on your brand new bass, oh that's ok I've got a cool reliced sandberg which just looks even cooler now,!
2. I find myself rather captivated by the dingwall super P, but there isnt anywhere near me to try one, and the fanned fretboard they have leaves me with a few questions! Is the fanned fretboard easier / more difficult to play? Does it make the bass noticeably sound better, and if so, why doesn't everyone make their basses with fanned frets? Also I like chromes on my P bass, would the different length strings required on each string mean that strings with silks on cannot be used? Thoughts from fellow bass chatters would be appreciated. Whether the fanned fretboard works or not, it looks bloody great!!!!!!!
3. The clone of my 1971 Precision, only this is my year of birth...mmmmmmmmmm nice....
4. 2mm a actually seems to be quite low then! Does anyone have their string height much lower than this?
5. What constitutes a low action? I set my Precisions up with a 2mm gap between the top on the 12th fret and the bottom of the strings, this seems pretty good to me, I've managed to set it lower before but found it a little uncomfortable to play, particularly when slapping, what's string height do people tend to have?..
6.
At one time i owned the GR1, the Proton, the Wonderlove and the MXR M82 (i think that there was actually also a AW-3 around). The Wonderlove has a quackier sound, the envelope is more errr "open". My thoughts were that the core sound was closer to the Proton and MXR when comparing to the GR. The WL is a great tool with lots of control but somebody will have to rip my GR from my cold dead hands before i part with it. The GR has a warmer tone (to my ears), the envelope is more "polite" and in my opinion that fits better a bass guitar. I don't like high pitch quacky sounds from an EF. My main regret is that i had to pass the oportunity to buy a GR2 from a friend of mine a few weeks ago, the blend option on these is a plus that i think it would work even better in my sound.
The blend option makes a big difference on the meatball, just so many sounds you can get from it.
7. I sent the proton back, it sounded good by itself but just got lost in the mix when playing with a band, whereas the meatball cuts through like a knife, being able to select between high pass, low pass or mid filters, and then even being able to tweak those really does help to fine tune your funk! I'm going to let our guitarist and hammond player have a go and see how it sounds with them.
8.
Status halfrounds? Almost flats and great strings
Yeah, forgot about these, very nice strings and very cheap purchased direct from status!
9. D`Addario Chromes are great strings, I had some le bella deep talking previously but found them to be a little dead!
10. Hi Spike, thanks for the kind offer but I already have a very nice mark bass rig.
11. £1000 What I'm looking at is at a reasonable price so willingly to pass that on and I'm open to reasonable offers. I've decided to keep my 71 Precision but will be parting with my 1983 Precision. It was owned by a collector before me and is in immaculate condition. It has one slight dink on the neck, other than that it looks like it came out the factory yesterday. I have changed the White pick up covers for black, but will supply the originals. I'm looking for something a little more lived, a limelight would be considered. Consider trades for good quality jazz bass
12. I'm thinking those prices are going to keep on going up too! When I'm old and hanging up my bass this will be worth a small fortune!
13. I thought about the 3leaf wonderlove, and tried 3 lead proton which was a little tame for me and didn't cut through the mix, I just thought that if I'm going to get one, get the best, and it was a toss up between the meatball and mutron, I'd love to get them side by side!
14. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that there is a problem with active basses, the problem is me and active basses! The stingray I had, had a 3 band eq, and 5 options for pick up positions! I'm an habitual tweaker and it would drive me mad, even when I was happy with my sound!!!
15. To be honest, initially I thought that it would be impossible to tame, but after 30 minutes of twiddling knobs and reading through the instructions it all makes sense, I find it to be quite easily tweaked, and not difficult at all, I can get it to do what I want pretty quickly, it's really quite intuitive and just makes sense once you understand what all the dials do..
16. I had the same, stingray HH, just way to many options for a simple bassist like myself, plug and play....ug..
17. Well, this has now arrived and has been gigged a couple of times. This cost me £300, but it's the sort of thing that's likely to go up in value over the years. This beast takes a little taming, but once tamed it is an absolute beauty. There are plenty of tweakable options and it gives that mutron bootsy funk that I like so much, you can switch between low pass, mid band and high pass filtering, with another four stages of funk within each band, for bass the low pass filter works best and depending on what you want, you can get real sub bass "brown" notes or you can filter a little high for mutron funk, you can hook up additional passive volume pedals to adjust attack and decay mid funk. You can have your funk going up, or down, with down giving more of a phaser thing going off. I've gone through plenty of envelope filters over the years since my first meatball and nothing comes close. The EMMA Discumbobulator was the best until I gave this another go, but the meatball blows it out of the water, it really is a great pedal and has true bypass, I only use two pedals, this and a top quality compressor. It doesn't get used every song by any means, but wow when it does get used! I'm pretty sure that these arnt made anymore, lovetone were a boutique britsh company set up in the 90s that made a number of top quality pedals, they crop up occasionally on basschat and always fetch a premium price.
18. The early AER amp one's used a heatsink and no fan, these things are immense, mine was a 2008 version, huge portability and a sound that just has no right to come out of a box that size, only down side is that your still looking at about £600 to pick an old one up, that may seem a lot for a 200watt single 10 inch speaker combo, but you won't think so once you've heard it! You get what you pay for..
19. Personally I much prefer the simplicity of a passive bass, put an active bass in my hands and I'm forever twiddling with knobs and never happy, bass up, mid cut, treble boost, bass boost, mid boost, no cut, no boost, no cut, neck pick up, brigde pick up, balanced, neck bridge, neck, bridge, mid cut, bass cut, boost, cut, boost cut, neck, bridge, neck, bridge, mid, bass, treble, boost this, cut that, no, boost, cut, boost, cut...............aaaaaaaggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh That's why I currently have two Precisions and I'm very happy
