I would never care about what make of bass was being played. Oddly i would more likely to think you had a crap amp or something. If someone can really play or just plays simple stuff but has great tone i really wouldn't care what they played on, in fact probably be really impressed to see someone get great sound from cheaper gear. See someone playing a fodera bass, expensive amp and loads of boutique pedals i would think cool then after what a Tit. See someone getting great sound out of a gear4music bass and a harley benton rig with a few behringer pedals and i would think wow thats cool, but then i would think Tit bet he has an expensive bass at home that he won't bring out haha.
Don't expect too much after 3 months. If you are of a gigging standard after 3 years, you'll be doing well. It's all relative...
Yeah to me this seems right, ive known mainly guitar players but other people who play various instruments. And while you do get these people who can play well, learn and gig in a short period of time this is the exception rather than the rule. I have 1 friend who was good enough in around a year of playing on guitar, he was a natural and put in the practice was also confident. But most people ive known have taken 3 plus years before they gigged. Myself im coming up to 2 years playing and could gig basic, beginner stuff and maybe some intermediate things. And i can jam along ok with decent players, But I feel i need another year or two playing before i would gig though. Everyone is different do what you feel. Definitely playing with others makes you better. Go for it!. But if it doesn't go to plan make sure its not going to put you off. I seen a friend do two crap first gigs in a row the band could of been alright but the singer could not sing and they hardly rehearsed, he had played guitar for 9 years and was pretty good but it put him right off, hardly plays now!.
When you think as bass players we are concerned about how thick the paint is regarding amplified tone of it in a live mix it is amazing any of us have ever seen a naked lady never mind actually touching a real one possibly even in a rude place!
Hahaha

Funny enough on stripped down bodies i set up a old squier for someone recently it had been totally hand stripped sounded lovely unamped, much better than my old one. Not entirely convinced it was due to it have no paint etc. My theory would be thick finishes do two things decrease string energy decay into the body, and muffle/dampen that energy coming out the body. Actually that is science right there. However would a human ear really notice it!.

Using Fender tapes 9120m. I like there sound but can't get on with the low tension never played strings so floppy, honestly my action was 2 -1.5mm with flatwounds now with these on all of my strings are at 4mm!!! (17th fret so probably 0.5mm lower at 12th). They also feel greasy and very slippery finger keep flying off them. Although they do play very easy even at high action. I would like my bass to have a lower action so im looking at getting higher tension tapewounds. Anyone know which brands would suit me more.
Glad to hear this as it's " amateurs" and " their" and " I'm".
Haha normally the auto spell check picks these things out and i correct, apart from my other poor grammar. But very funny . See if i was a pro i would not stand for this!. And would be leaving... -
It would be nice to see some pro-players opinions on gear and how much they either get into it, or don`t. Having listened to quite a few bass isolated tracks the impression I get is that we on here are much more into the search for the eternal bass sound than they are, as many of those isolated tracks sound quite rough.
Yeah i feel the same after listening to isolated tracks. I guess if your in the studio a lot you will know that much of your sound will be lost in the mix and that to a certain degree you are not fully in charge of the end result. I also think that if your a pro you wont be wanting to be told your wrong which in many cases is subjective anyhow. But amatures and semi pros are more likely to be more willing to listen and even be told there wrong. At present im very willing to be told im wrong and learn. But if i ever make it i think my attitude would change and while i would not come on a forum and give it the big i am, i would come on a forum and expect a lot more respect even if im wrong. -
They are concentric drivers - they save a lot of space, so Ashdown can keep the unit small.
They also apparently cost more than 200 pounds. As said before i think 4 speakers two full range and 2 voiced for bass would of been better and cheaper. You would not have to make the unit larger with clever arrangement, it may slightly weigh more and i would assume be slightly less energy efficient but performance would be either similar or better while overall costs would go down. Also there speakers taken two years to develop with my idea it could of used off the shelf parts and still been the same size. The looks of it have actually grown on me. Would like to see the speakers with heavy duty grills as they will be expensive to replace if damaged.
So where would you put the two extra speakers?
Without altering the dimensions i would have larger bass speaker right at the bottom corners and smaller full range ones at the front and a much smaller meter at the front. Or internal with some sort of simple reflex system and ports towards the front. Another idea would be front and on the top kind of like a phil jones briefcase. I can think of lots of variations to try. However it would be more optimal to redesign it slightly to match my proposed speaker combination.

Funny things that people say to you at gigs
Twincam replied to Tom Brookes Music's topic in General Discussion
I will admit that when ive been rather too drunk for my own good i have probably said some stupid things to bands. Last time i must of annoyed sh*t out the bassist, although he was canny enough with me. I got a go of his bass and even his backup one, chatted about his amp etc. Lol one time i was listening to a band they were good, the guitarist swapped guitars and i immediately yelled out "P90 pickups!" which were indeed the pickups on the guitar. Everyone turns and looks at me, the guitarist gave me a thumbs up and a nod before launching into a solo. A Slightly strange thing to yell out. Oh well. -
Any Kings of Leon song will be pretty easy because the bass player admits, he's only just starting to learn how to play the thing. The first two albums are ridiculously easy. He was the relative who was asked to join the band because the rest of the family had formed it. Lucky break!
I never knew that, pretty cool.
I have the Players School combo - I don't have much to compare it with hands on but with my USA SUB it still sounds proper slap-py, but you can also dial it down to be a really versatile sound (none of that impossible to lose top end sizzle that personally I hate) - then with a P with flats - oh my my - just proper. This video helped me take the plunge but even this doesn't really do it justice http://www.iguitarma...-players-combo/
Yeah i seen that vid, i thought it was canny so if you think it does not do it justice then i think i know which im getting.
Once was told by a punter 'I haven't had such a good time since I saw Gary Glitter'. Not quite sure what she meant now.
...... Hahahaha! thats funny . -
People have been upgrading them for better ones, i don't know the details but if you search over on talkbass i think there is more info on that forum about it.

The first rule of the basschat composition challenge is that you don't mention the basschat composition challenge lol
-
This thread has taken an unexpected and depressing twist hahah. Badgering Apathy Piss taking Criticism etc etc
-
I must say im slightly disappointed that some see it as badgering. After all Basschat is a good forum with mostly great members and is a community. Asking people to get involved is not exactly badgering not as if your being press ganged with a stick. Or if you have to get involved. There are many topics and things going on im not keen on i read the title etc and don't get involved and move on. People should see this as a bit of fun. In which case why not make it a monthly bass riff challenge a short no longer than 1 min type thing.
-
While i respect Ashdown. And i have nothing at all against there amps unlike others here. And i will try be as respect full as possible in my reply. I honestly still think 4 speakers 2 bass and 2 full range would of been more practical (probably would work better too), cheaper because you could of then used off the shelf speakers!. Less development time (2 years developing the speaker). I actually have said i like the idea but i think there are some flaws in my view. As for my comments about frequency i did say it does not paint the whole picture. I am willing to be proven wrong and learn on all my comments. I am just saying it as i see it which in this case is it could be cheaper and perform just as well if not better.
-
I have heard of the composition challenge but in all my near two years being on this site i think ive noticed posts about it maybe 4 times. I don't know if that just me missing it or the challenge is not mentioned enough and not a big of a deal is made of it. I think the recording section/share music section in general should be brought upwards to the top of the main page it might encourage more people to go in there. Just a thought.

I would love that as a birth year bass.
I've been relearning the Four Tops: Same Old Song; I Can't Help Myself; I'll Be There and Paul Young's version of a Tear Your Playhouse Down. These sound great on the Rob Allen.
I sang and played I can't help myself to a gf she dumped me not long after haha (true story ) Anyhow just been learning Little Green Bag (george baker selection). A really cool song to learn.

Barefaced Retro Two10 - Shock and Awe bass sound
Twincam replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
I liked it sounds good and its actually now stuck in my head!. The tone was a bit harsh for me, not harsh in a bad way just not my tone as i myself would of played it with the tone rolled off slightly, zero tweeter tone and finger style. I also thought the drums were cool and suited the piece. -
He has complete independence doesn't he. Beautiful sounding voice too. One of the best reunions ever too, they sounded wonderful.
Awesome. Love that tune but i still hear hitting the taskbar everytime lol.

I would be canny pissed off if someone was trying to back me into a corner like that.
Billy Jean. Very easy to play the main riff. But it's so repetitive that it fatigues your fretting hand quickly. Its ok now as ive got used to it, but i remember i found it hard to finish the song when i first started playing it. I also think that playing it accurately, and stopping the notes rather than letting them ring through can be quite tricky at the start.
I actually use that main riff as a hand exercise because of those very reasons, it also makes a good speed building exercise too.
