1.
"Damn, I've ordered the wrong decal. Oh well, waste not, want not."
Haha that was my thoughts too.
 2.
It was quite clearly directed at anyone who didn't agree with you. You can't ask people for people to give their opinions on something & then start getting all arsey because some people don't think it's a very good idea.
Trust me I was not getting arsey at all. I think I've conducted myself well, despite people getting there knickers in a bunch about having a new idea and a alternative to the established comp. That's how you came across there. I made points why people may not enter the current comp and didn't want to take anything away from the composition challenge. What did you bring to this discussion? Ok you could of just said or now voted against it but no you went further. If people had said there not interested and given some points on why then fair enough but it seemed like others who were being arsey about it. I really don't get why this thread has ended up this way and in an effort to stop any offense I may of caused I am sorry maybe my posts didn't come over as intended I've always posted (most of the time) with only humour and respect on bc and I'm actually a bit upset that I may of annoyed anyone or came across with anything but respect. I only wanted to suggest something for the community and maybe in my haste I've not come across as I should of. I am sorry RhysP
 3. When I started this I really didn't think it would attract such a discussion. A few thoughts I've not asked people for no critism but it's not going to help get an idea started if people are coming on and just shooting the idea down totally and ridiculing it. The poll is a good idea. I think as skol said fx used is a good idea, but keeping it too simple fx as said. I like the 60 second noodle idea. I'm not sure what would work best having it as a challenge or something people can listen too and comment on. I voted challenge though. The challenge being that other people are suitable impressed and errors something else feel free to suggest something. Possibly even have a small prize? If it's a challenge or just for the noodle that gets the most comments although I guess it still makes it a competition. Any thoughts on small prizes? Of the value of say £5, I'm talking like a custom noodle challenge pick (I don't play with a pick but just an idea) or something else?, I would be willing to put some initial money into that sort of thing to cover at least the first year of the monthly prize so say £60 or so. If people are actually going to participate.
 4.
Woah, hang on. My post is one that you are (supposedly "with due respect") referring to here, a post that was very positive and encouraging. In light of this, I find your response incredibly offensive. The thought that you don't want anybody contributing in this way is incredibly egocentric, and, to me, now brings in to question your motives behind setting up the proposed alternative challenge. It is a real shame you have responded this way, as I was genuinely looking forward to hearing musical contributions like you suggested in the current challenge.
No you hold on there. As this was not directed at you in anyway shape or form so your reply made me laugh as that was egocentric! So honestly relax there I promise that was not directed at anyone.

 6.
Is this the sort of thing you're suggesting..? This is the first minute of an isolated solo bass 12-bar I did, using my Verithin into Reaper. Played to a drum track not heard here, it actually went on for a bit longer. It was solely for getting a general feel of the levels and such, nothing 'serious'. Isolated Verithin bass 12-bar ...
Yeah sure is. Just short clips of what I would call nice honest playing. As I've said its just to try get people involved without having to really get as involved in the production aspects and so on and then hopefully if people enjoy it then they will go on to the better more technical aspects of things. I'm not trying to take away anything from the current composition challenge I just really want people to get involved. And this would be the easiest form. And if I didn't know that clip was a hofner I would of said was that a hofner (classic sound)
 7. Can I just say with all due respect. This thread really should be for people interested in the idea and to say there interested, so hopefully get something going. And not really for people who don't want to take part or voice there opinions on why and clutter up the thread. If not enough people are interested so be it. I Don't go on the composition challenge thread and say I won't be taking part and what my opinions are on why I won't be and why not many people take part etc.
 8.
As a regular voter (but never an entrant) I'd welcome pieces like you are suggesting Twincam, but if you see how little traction this established competition gets I really can't see how an alternative version would work. Just use the picture as a starting point - I've never really taken too much notice, when it comes to voting, I just go with the compositions I like the most. Get stuck in, put your short, simple ideas up next month 0 I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the response.
Not everyone has the time or equipment for the established comp, nor would any simple isolated bass tracks do well in the comp. And many would not feel at ease putting a simple composition against the far more technical versions. I believe people would like a easier going, simple and quick alternative. And that more people would be likely to enter. Of course I might be wrong on that one. Just thought it might encourage some activity but I can sense a resistance already by some.
 9.
So it's basically the "Play any old sh*te challenge" then.
If it gets people having a go of something and a bit more involvement from basschatters then yeah And maybe it will lead to more people having a go and think yeah that's good now where do I go from here and maybe they just might get more equipment and get on board with the "proper" composition challenge.
 10.
How exactly is your idea a 'challenge'? Without a picture or something to provide inspiration what are the criteria against which the bass parts would be judged? You don't have to get that massively into the whole recording thing to submit a piece for the current challenge, it's meant to be about the musical ideas, not the level of skill shown in the recording.
Because you have to play an instrument and sound good too others. Without all the other stuff added. I hope no one thinks I'm suggesting the other comp isn't good or anything. Just theres not many take part this is something everyone can do in as little as a minute.
 11.
Would it be the same idea as the current comp where there's a pic to compose to, or would it be something else? I'd happily compose a little solo bass number now & again. It's these sort of things that end up getting used in songs.
As I suggested it would have no pics or ideas for a composition, just to make it simple for everyone. It can be inspired by anything or if you've been messing around and you have a few notes strung together that sound good then great. Or if you have something a little more complex you've been working on great too. Doesn't have to be a really simple bass line either. Although I'm hoping to encourage simpler play, just too really attract anyone no matter what ability or what equipment they have. Something the whole basschat community can get involved in for a bit of fun together. Without feeling that you have to be good at the technical stuff (or playing even hahaha) That I hope would be the general idea.
 12.
Happy to give this a run if enough people are interested Post below if it floats your boat and we can set something up for February.
Cool. Hopefully it will attract people. Think it will be a bit of easy fun that literally anyone can have a go at. It needs only bare bones equipment. You don't have to worry so much about ability either as it can be as simple as you like. If you've made up a cool little riff, ditty, simpler bass only composition etc etc.
 13. Ok so I've been listening to the composition challenge and I like it and there's some great things in there and I'm certainly not in anyway knocking it, but there's a few things I feel put me and others off having a go. Mainly all the editing, effects other tracks and so on. So I propose an alternative idea to run along side it. A very simplified version. For little ditties, riffs or whatever. So simple you can record it with a phone infront of your cab if need be. That way anyone! (most people have a smart phone) can have a go. Just bass, no effects and no other tracks. Just isolated bass. No pictures for inspiration can be whatever you want. 1 min max length. No editing allowed bar say cutting off the end of a track. Would anyone but me be interested in that???
 14. If you have another bass and are desperate fair enough. But I wouldn't sell a bass you get on with, unless really needed or you really fancy a change.
 15. Yeah bass playing is good for the left hand, finger and wrist in general (if not overdone). Doing a little bit of stretching is a good idea too. It's also good for the mind, especially if you learn a new song at least once a fortnight. And as we all know it's good for the soul.
 16. Both are very nice basses. I know what you mean about being nervous of something in such nice tidy condition. Lovely p bass you have.
 17. Your original post vanished. Looks like it's still there to me.
 18.
it's been to my local and highly respected luthier. He's seen it before. It's a shame because I love the bass
Oh, any particular reason he could not fix it? Or is it just because under warranty it will be sent back etc? Its rare but I guess failures do happen from the factory time to time. Saying that I would of thought from fender they get a basic setup at the factory???
 19.
Is it valve or solid-state humour ? Solid-state humour's just not as funny....
Hybrid.
 20. I would of thought since playing an instrument tends to be a lifetime or longer term hobby/profession and since of course there's always new bits of kit coming out the forum would have more longevity for people. I can understand people posting less or not at all but not viewing the classifieds, it's one of my fav parts of the day haha.
 21. I've noticed posts from members I've never heard of in old threads and being curious clicked on there profile to find they have not been on the forum at all for a long time but had been fairly regular contributing members at one time. I notice that other members had viewed there profile long after they had been active, so I'm guessing other people wonder why they have stopped being active too. Of course we may never know there reasons, there could be hundreds of reasons why. So as the title says can you envision yourself ever not bothering with bc after being a regular?
 22.
I've never had a Fender with a deadspot, and wouldn't buy any bass with one, why would you? Not sure what the OP means by the Title of the post "The Fender dead spot", almost implying its inherent by the design. The design being a wooden neck bolted onto a wooden body, like 90% of all instruments. I have played basses with deadspots though, and always quickly put them back. I always find flats to be just that anyway...flat. I have them on a couple of my basses mainly to save frets, but generally its Rounds everytime for me on my regular players, much more responsive. Different tones though, so I guess it depends what you want. Horses for courses and all that.
Indeed. It's like when people say "fender ski jump" for the little rise that can happen on any bolt on neck.
 23.
I bought some Dunlop polish yesterday, worked fine cleaning finger marks off a poly covered guitar. Tried it on my old SG ('74). Bloody disaster. The finish has gone cloudy and very satin. Tried some Autosol and that is no better. Any of the other products mentioned above remedy this issue? Cheers
Is this a case of a reaction? If so not great news.
 24.
Considering putting "morally questionable" in Twincam's feedback thread
You know what as I was typing that I thought "I hope no one thinks I'm a bit dodgy" hahaha I'm actually a really honest guy, in this case someone has been messed about by a shop and rightly sent the bass back all good there right thing too do etc etc. But it takes time away from you, having to repackage the bass and then wait for courier which is an arse on and never mind the "if's" say he had needed the bass for gig. So I felt like many he should of had some form of compensation. If this happened in a private sale ok no issue no ones fault, my issue is with a shop expecting all this and not even offering say a free pack of strings as a goodwill gesture.
 25.
99% have them. My Us Vintage P has a dead spot, my Squier VM jazz has one, my two Mexican standard Jazz Basses had them too.
I disagree I've had a few fenders usa, mij and mim and never had a dead spot, I did however have a few on a squire p bass.
