Recording bass onto my MacBook - what do I need to get started?
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Recording
Thanks for your post - I have a Mark Bass Little Mark III so sure that I can take the DI from that - if not what kind of preamp do people use? Silly question but where is the line in on the MacBook is it the socket next to the headphones out?
some people say that for decent results you need a dedicated firewire/usb preamp but the soundcards on macbook and imacs are pretty good imo. I (and people that i've worked with) have gotten really good (well as good as di can get) results just using a preamp straight into the line in. if you have an amp that you like that has a di out then a di to jack cable would work (with a mini jack addapter) otherwise any preamp would do really.
-
I want to start recording basslines at home and also adding to tracks sent to me by my bandmates - I have Macbook with Garageband on it. Is the best program to use and if so what is the most cost effective/best sounding way to record digitally? I am new to all of this stuff and am not really sure where to start!

Aguilar Filter Twin - Anyone tried one yet?

Can't believe no-one has tried one yet! -
Anyone help with this?
OK so I have been looking for a vintage Musitronics Mu-Tron III for a while now and I have just seen one for sale but it is from the ARP years which was 1979 to 1980 just before they went bust. There is talk on the web that these do NOT sound the same as the Musitronics version and I wonder if anyone can confirm this? Would like some advice before I go and waste a load of money!! Can anyone also advice anyone in the UK who can mod these pedals to make them true bypass as I have also that they suck the life out of your tone when used live!
Always glad to be of some assistance Bubinga!!
what a knob head...that was quite satisfying...
What are you transcribing at the moment?
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Faithless's topic in General Discussion
The bass solo from Magnetic Ocean by Incognito.
You saw the question.. Let it be 6-chorus Coltrane solo on Giant Steps, or just simple accompanying The Police bass-part.. I'm basically interested, in what fellow bassists do transcribe.. So we could share, and maybe catch some suggestions from each other to work on.. I've just started working on Berklee Woodwind Head's, saxophonists, Bill Pierce's solo on a plain 12-bar blues..
-
Can you buy them anywhere yet? I bought the Tri-Mod Wah last week and initial impressions are very good but there does seem to be a real drop in volume when you engage the pedal. Anyone else found this?
Very very very new indeed!
Can't seem to find these for sale on the web yet - are they new?
STOP!!! Wait, get one of these bad boys Now struggling with the big kinda GAS that causes explosive decompression of the cranium Here's the blurb:- The Bass Envelope Filter is a continuation of the evolving line of Source Audio effects optimized specifically for the bass guitar. There are 21 different envelope filter effects to choose from including 2 Pole and 4 Pole Low Pass variations, Single Peak, Triple Peak, Peak/Notch variations, as well as Phaser settings. Each of these settings can be further modified with a variety of control options including positive/negative filter sweeps, sweep range, attack and decay speed settings, or frequency range selection. I love the soundblox stuff, and if the did it in a Pro box with the 6 recalls I'd be all over that like a case of terminal herpes.... Fretmeister recently bought my Subdecay Prometheus pedal, great comms and quick payment too. Would highly recommend to others.

Interested to know if anyone has used one of these yet - if so some feedback would be great.
-
Yeah I'll go with that too - there is so much crap in the charts that it drives you mad! PT is a great bass player and yep I would take his job in a flash!! I think that most of us are just disappointed that after waiting for so long what we are hearing is not all that great. Having said that I did see them at Hyde Park this summer and they were fantastic. Maybe the rest of the album will be better and thinking about it they have done a couple of ok tracks in recent years thinking of Little L and You Give Me Something.
Here's my 2 pence worth: I think we should all be happy that there is gonna be a song in the charts with a loud, prominent and most importantly REAL bass line!!!!
-
Ah yes but that is classed as constructive help - how any times have you seen that someone owns something that you are interested in purchasing and you can then ask them what it is like etc. If we didn't list our gear then no-one would know who owns what. If Basschater's started putting their cars and houses in their sig's then I would start getting really worried!!
I don't think most of us bass chatters can talk considering our photos/sigs display the expensive gear we all own/long for!
-
Yes but I am sure he still sanctioned the use of all those clips? Anyone else with a slightly smaller ego might just have asked for something else to be used!!!
The video is like that because they only JUST finished the track and haven't produced the official video, so they just set it to montage of stuff that was easy to shoot/photograph.
-
Yes but the shame is that he can't even do the stuff that he did before anymore either!! Where has the funk of EOPE and ROSC albums gone? Very disappointed as they had said that they would be going back to their roots for this album now that they were free of the corporate chains of Sony. Also who really wants to watch a video of all of Jay Kay's toys? We all know he has a Ferrari and fking great big house so don't need to be shown it all the time thanks.
Good, but nothing new.
Replacing original pick ups in a vintage jazz bass
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Accessories and Misc
Nothing wrong with p/ups in my opinion but just wondered if I was missing a trick by not looking at more modern options? I have just changed my rig and used it last night for the first time and thought that the jazz sounded great through it!! However I can see the logic that 36 years ago the pickups were just bulk standard issue and never really meant to be anything special - if you take the comparison to cars for example no-one would get excited about the engine put into a 1974 Austin Allegro if you know what I mean!
Plus 1000!!!!!!!! You haven't actually said what's wrong with the current ones other than that somebody else has offered a general opinion on older pups. You can get really good vintage replacements by all the main brands like Seymour Duncan, Wizard etc. If you want a more modern sound, yes you can achieve that too but then is it the right bass for what you are after? But in answer to your original question it won't be devalued if you keep the originals, assuming you are not rerouting stuff / changing the original configuration. My original 1970s P-bass is all stock. I have two late 70s basses which are not all original (one Wizard Trad and one Seymour Duncan SPB-1 as you asked). These were parts that I assembled to be complete basses so keeping the original pups was never going to be an option.
-
Hi Andy, Yeah I didn't know either until Bernie mentioned it to me too! As you may know Bernie used to be the UK importer for KSD basses and he felt that the tone was lacking so used to put the EBS pre-amp into all of his basses. I imported mine direct from the states before I knew him which is why my 4 string was done afterwards. The pre-amp offered a really top end "zing" and a nice bass boost too. I think off the top of my head it cost about £200 ish for the pre-amp and fitting. I got rid off the 4 basses that I had to pay for my GB Rumour and the 4 string was one of these, whilst Bernie was building my GB I needed a bass so bought a 5 string KSD from him too. In the end I got rid of that because I never quite clicked with a 5 string and also once I got the Rumour nothing else got a look in. Yes that is my Rumour in the pic - cracking walnut on her!!
Thanks, interesting tbh. been using ebs td650 212 pro and 410 pro amazing kit, didnt realise ebs did inboard preamps for bass. do you remember how much it cost?why did you get rid of yours? that lovely gb in your photo?? thanks Andy
Going through a bit of a dilemma as to whether to change the pick ups in my 74 jazz bass or not. I have been given some advice that the stock p/ups were never that special and that by changing them for more modern ones will really let the bass sing. Any opinions or advice would be gratefully received particularly by those that have gone down this route already. If you have changed them what did you go for and why? Does changing the pickups de-value the bass at all? Cheers

I would go for the EBS preamp. I used to have a Proto-J both a 4 string and 5 string version and Bernie Goodfellow fitted an EBS preamp into both and it made a huge difference to the sound. I don't think that the stock p/ups in them are much cop TBH.
thinking of upgrading my ksd5 with dimarzio+sadowsky inboard or aguilar obp1 think ag the same as sadowsky... woundering if anyones done any mods to proto js before.. great bass just think the pickups and pre might be letting it down.bit pop and crackle, eats batteries any ideas without spending to much dosh. thanks Andy
Jake, Glad to hear that my old Epi cab is serving you well! Mark
It was an engagement party. 3 sets, from motown to smashmouth to take that to original stuff. It took everything i threw at it and sounded fantastic
Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
Uh oh that makes it even more attractive - did you have to import it from the States? Without wanting to divert this into an envelope filter thread which other ones have you had that the GR is better than apart from the DiscumBob?
Velcro like any other pedalboard. The surface is great and velcro sticks solid, but leaves no residue when you peel it off (with some force!). I'm using white velcro so that little bit more light seeps through around the pedals. Groove regulator is without doubt the best Envelope I have ever owned. It was the only pedal that ever sounded better than my DiscumBOBulator and I can't see me getting shot. So much more solid sounding that a Meatball or Meatwad and much much cheaper. The tracking on a low B is unreal!
