If they could just do me a 5 string like this...id be happy 😂
I wonder who'll be custom building that for you next year?
It sings as well as snaps - intriguing that a 65 year old design (a very well put together version thereof) just has everything more or less covered.
Yeah, it's nuts isn't it?! If I didn't need a P with a double J bridge pickup as I do now, and had to go back to a single pickup P, then I wouldn't hesitate to chose a good snappy single coil Precision over a split pickup one.
I'll be really honest, I worried at rehearsal how it'd cope/sound. I've been using active 5 strings for about 2 years now and pulling my Precision out for Motown stuff. Our new drummer is a crazy level 42 fan, so when the guitarist is late we usually jam through some "early tapes" type stuff just to blow the cobwebs off. This bass, on paper, shouldn't sound right for that type of playing. Jesus, it's got it. And I've owned Jaydees/Status' just so I could play that kind of stuff. No idea what all that multi laminated wood and Carbon Fibre is For 😆 (I do miss my kingbass though)

The '55s are versatile, in many ways more so than the split coil Precisions
I'd agree with Chris there for sure. But there is also something about your particular bass Andy that cuts through like no other CS 55 I've had, which is 4 now including that one. That bass has something of its own, looks like you got the right one for you.
It is lovely, and the Duncan Custom wound pickup is really special. I might end up with a CIJ Paisley soon so the Fender CS pickup may have a home yet. Put the bridge cover on today - jury's out, I have it on my other P but the mute is built into that.
It's a great pickup isn't it, very full bodied tone. It's well worth the extra hum to have it in the non stacked mode in my opinion. I did wonder about the bridge covers, I've always preferred the look of them with two on. But in fairness it still looks gorgeous and authentic with just the pickup cover, and that one makes a great thumb rest too! Having had a few of these old style P Basses its odd not to have one anymore, especially looking at this thread. You can thank my Lull P Bass and current mood of only having the bare minimals at home for me even thinking about selling that bass. So I got rid of a Martin I wasn't that into and you got a killer P Bass, happy days

Glad you're loving it Andy Wasn't an easy decision for me to not keep this one having taken it on a trade. I'd admired it for a long time as my friend owned it, the feel and tone of this bass is something very special without question, it's stands out as a memorable one. The pictures don't do it enough justice either! And that neck,,,,oh that neck..... .

To sell or not to sell that is the question

I never did understand why people keep basses they don't play. But if that's cool for them, then why not eh? -
Modulus Flea bass, (withdrawn, lost my bottle!)
Chiliwailer replied to chrisanthony1211's topic in Basses For Sale
Feeling your dilemma Chris. All I can say is that I am seriously glad I never ended up selling my purple Flea. At least if you do sell one you have 2 others left. Though I could add that strangely I don't miss any of my pre CBS Fenders, and I have had some lovely ones. I wish I could have kept a couple of them in an ideal world, but the prices they are these days put a swift stop to that and I just couldn't justify that capital tied up when other more serious needs were to be met. If you do scratch that lovely pre CBS itch, make sure it's a good one, worth the money, and not a bugger to resell! -
When my girlfriend saw on my emails that I had a 'personal conversation' with bigmuff69 she was quite concerned about my fidelity.... However I assured her that I was the one doing the selling and that I had a very easy, friendly, straight forward and no hassle sale with said bigmuff69 Cheers

I just wish we also had youtube vids of Mozart at 8 years old

Happy Birthday pal, great to hear you had a good one In answer to your question, I feel like I'm lucky enough to have owned some very special basses already but the one I'd really like, and would be special for me,is the chance to have another YOB 78 Music Man Sabre, in brown with maple neck. Cheers for the GAS renewel...

You're right, it's not a USA case as they were black tolex at that time. It's a well known fact that many international importers had Fenders shipped to them without the cases, this was to keep the costs down. So this case could well have been from an international distributer, meaning the guy who owns it would think its 'original' as it's what was sold to him at the time. Just depends on your view of original and if you can find out more about international cases. I've only seen earlier Swedish cases. It's worth mentioning that the amps of that period had silver faces with blue print, so the plate they made for the case is at least in time with the era.
I suppose a psychologist would call it a 'displacement activity' or some such?
I often wonder that. But also, I wonder if it's about: Looking for happiness in the wrong place Not understanding the difference between want and need Plugging a hole in your life, though you're not aware that the hole actually exists Addiction to wanting Or Just that there are too many nice guitars and basses in the world and we can be fickle beings. Which brings you back to want and need, get that right and the force is with you to resist that GAS. I'm happy to have fun with GAS if I'm not going to lose money, nothing to lose that way.

These are such awesome pickups and really bring a Tele's solo neck pickup position to life. They are slightly taller than a regular Tele neck pickup and are wound to sound as close to a Strat neck pickup as you can get. I had this in a CS Nocaster and it sounded amazing, sadly don't have the guitar anymore so this is up for grabs. Postage possible, please PM if interested.
Ahhhhh.... well, THAT explains everything. I was just thinking if Mexico never made that type of bass in a Mist finish, but the neck is clearly MiM, then maybe it's a bitsa. But I'm sure I MUST be wrong and this HAS to be from the Mexico Custom shop.
Ah, the infamous Mexican Custom Shop, that's to blame for many a mess... Remember the Splattercaster? This is 100% legit, I was a sales rep for Arbitor and then Fender at the time. They were a special run, and very nice too.
Bearing in mind the contradictions identified by some of the guys here, do we know for sure that this isn't a bass of mixed origin?
Designed in California, made in Mexico and living in the UK isn't mixed origin enough for you?
-
I wonder if it was a special run? It certainly looks a nice find!
Yes, they were a FSR but were available for quite some time. I very nearly bought a BM Jazzmaster at the time, great colour

Hi Karl, having worked for Fender around then I can confirm that you're right as they were marketed as a 60's, no specific year given. I can see how someone would argue that it's based on a 62, but that's an argument I personally can't be arsed with
