1. It's a bit like finding a good woman for me. Find a great one that fits you straight off, don't find one that you'll always want to change. I reckon that if we're always 'looking for that sound' we'll never find it, cos we're too used to looking and will continue to do so out of habit. But tinkering with basses to see what we like and what's what, nothing wrong with that, reminds me of my fun teens and 20's experimenting with what to find in a good woman, (er I mean bass...)
 2.
A bump for Chiliwailer, a really nice guy, and particularly because I have tried this bass in the flesh. It had a clear open sound - to my ears classic early P bass, and it is in remarkable condition, case and all. It had one the easiest necks I've played on an early P bass. Just wish I could have bought it, ..... Im still tempted.
Thank you C, much appreciated Should you feel compelled to give in to your temptation, there's a Sunday lunch and plenty of Aberlour a'Bundadh waiting here for you and your good lady Take care brother.
 3. Yes you're right, this is a special one! This bass was bought from, and is listed as 'sold' on the Andy Baxter Bass website, up for £4500 if you'd like to take a look. It sold for that amount to my friend, who sold it to me when he decided to buy, yet another, 1957 Precision. However, having already got a 1966 Precision I'm letting this one go to pay for a Modulus I just bought and also put some well needed cash back in the bank. Bass Gallery have also got one just like this for sale at £5500.There is a well used on on eBay in the UK for £3495, Andy Baxter has a well used one for £4000. I think £3500 is great for a bass of this quality and condition. It's in stunning and almost mint condition, just a few subtle knocks and small scratches that you really have to look for, it's practically lived in it's case yet sounds and feels absolutely gorgeous. The neck is stunning and the tone is crystal clear with the kind of warmth only the old ones give you. The bass is 'virgin', it has no changed parts and comes with it's original hard case and metal covers - including the muting foam on the bridge cover, which is quite rare. Though the neck date is not visible, it is May 1966. I know this because my other bass is May 1966 and the visible lines match, plus they are only 182 places apart in the serial numbers. The only thing to mention is that the tone capacitor has had the end chopped off. The tone still rolls off the treble when backed off and I can supply an original 1966 tone capacitor from my other bass if required. I hesitate to change this one though as the bass still sounds great and I would prefer to keep the solder joints virgin. Weighs only 8.42lb, very light for a Fender. I am based in Harrow, NW London/Middx. Posting is not recommended but may be possible, please email me if interested. 4.
Looks fab, want!!
Haha! Me too! It arrived in the UK early hours of this morning from the States, I'm looking forward to getting it later in the week hopefully
 5. And a reverse thread too, sweet... I did like buying my '66 mint condition P bass. Now I don't like having to sell it on....
 6. Great topic! 1993 - 2001 I absolutely hated Precisions, I just didn't get it! 2001 - now I love them to death, that's the main bass for me!
 7. I liked the quotes about the value of a vintage when bought new compared to today's inflation adjustment. BUT THIS IS WHERE IT HURTS....... It's not about the 'cost in 1962 versus cost in 2013' that gives me sleepless nights. It's the fact that:

In 1999 a shop I worked in sold a 1957 Strat for £5000, they now go for £18,000 plus
In 1999 I could have bought a 1958 Precision for £3500, they now sell for double that
In 1993 a shop I worked in sold a TV Yellow Les Paul Junior for £1000, now they are at least 7 times that
In 2004 I bought a refinished 1964 Jazz Bass for £2200, they can now often sell for double that
In 2006 a shop I worked in sold a blonde 1961 Stack Knob Jazz for £10,000, it then sold again at another shop I worked in for £18000 3 years later
These are just a few examples. Sleep tight.
 8. £30 posted I love TI strings and have them on all my basses. These are for sale because I am selling a Fender bass and will be putting roundwounds back on it. These strings are around 4 months old and have been very lightly used on a Precision Bass. Price includes 'signed for' postage. Cheers!
 9.
Put me down Third
Will do I think I found a gap in the market....
 10.
Can I be second in line if first doesn't happen! Cheers Chris
Sounds good, thanks.
 11.
Yeah that'd be lovely if you don't mind?!
No problem. I'm not in a hurry so if you need a week that's cool. Until next Sunday then. Cheers.
 12. For what it's worth, I used to have a JV Precision and a JV Stratocaster. I'd say that they are good instruments, but not worthy of the legend or prices in my opinion. My USA reissue '57 Strat was miles ahead of the JV version, and I always preferred my USA basses. Is a JV worth twice as much as a Jap or Mex reissue? I guess that's down to the guy buying it!
 13.
I thought the general concesus was 'Flea basses' were supposed to be junk? (purple or otherwise) Have they suddenly become cool or is this another type of Flea bass alltogether ? (ie: a Modulus in whuich case its a Modulus and not a 'flea bass' which is doing it a disservice, and if you can get it at a good price then do so and good luck to you sir)
Yeah, it's a Modulus. Real deal bass rather than the very cheap alternative. Anyhow, i bought it and am now waiting for it to cross the pond....
 14.
Give me a couple of days and I may well have this off you. Just got to shift a few things.
Do you want me to reserve it for a week?
 15.
Might pop it onto Ebay and see what happens..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-Vintage-1960-1961-1962-1963-Fender-Jazz-Bass-Guitar-Bridge-Pickup-/131034962115?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item1e824ad8c3
 16. Just so you know mate, these can go for very good money as they are hard to locate. Some sellers in the States have them at amazingly high prices due to the rarity and desirability of a pickup from the golden era of Fender. Good luck!
 17.
Great, thanks. Does anyone have any weblinks for comparisons? I've done a google search but not much comes up..
http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=516 http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=444 There's a coupe from AB's site with black bottom pickups. His site has excellent pictures of the gear he's selling. Identifying these is mostly down to experience too and looking for the finer details. Knowing the history of the bass can also help work it out, but it does look like an old one to me.
 18. The bevelled ends of the pole pieces, laquer and burgundy colour wire suggest that this is original. Fender changed to grey bottom pickups in 1964 but some black bottom pickups were used until up to around '67 so it may not be out of place in a '65 bass. Could be an original, best to locate pictures of others and do a 'spot the difference'. Andy Baxters website may be a good point of reference for pictures. Good luck
 19. SOLD This is such a lovely pickup. I've had it in a few basses, most recently my 1966 Precision. However I now have an original 1964 Precision pickup in my bass so this one is up for grabs. The best way to describe it is a full sounding vintage style pickup. It's a modern pickup so has great punch and definition but what I liked most was how it stayed true to a vintage style of tone. http://www.lollargui...ollar-customers £50 for the pickup, £5 for signed for posting. Cheers! 20. Hey Gary, it really is as lovely as you said. Mmmm, Ash body with maple fingerboard, one of my favorite combo's, bet she sounds gorgeous Who's gonna be the lucky one?
 21. I love Bass Doc's nitro tort, look great on that bass
 22. This is great, I've paid for the bass and am really looking forward to it arriving now from the States. So the general Basschat feel is that yes, a real man can play what the hell he likes, and you guys all approve the purple too which is nice to know. I won't dare to start a new topic though, being 'Am I a real man?' Cheers for the awesome replies.
