1. Seriously, £1400 for a CS Jazz and no one is biting, what's the world coming to?!!!! I already have a CS Jazz though and I couldn't be happier with it, Have a bump on me.
2. I've never seen a two tone bass before, the blue front and gold back is very cool. I absolutely love how adventurous Fender are these days, the Japs have shown the Yanks a thing or two about creativity and exploring an amazing history and inventory of basses over the years.I'm glad Fender USA and Mexico is getting on to it.
3.
The SUB range seems like a good option, I didn't know it...
Good call. Keep in mind that the newer Sub basses are not tof he same quality as the original mid 2000's USA made ones, which although uglier are much better. I've picked these up for friends before under £400, amazing value.
4.
Spector Legend s/h should fit your bill. The 35" scale sounds very authoritive.
'Authoritive', what a great way to describe a decent 5 string sound, nice one!
5. The problem with cheap 5's is that the low B ends up sounding like a wet fart. It may be hard for you to 'come down' to the overall tone of a cheaper instrument as I presume you have a nice Jazz and love the Corvette. £200 budget is mostly a tough call after owning premium basses. I wasn't impressed with the cheap Squier, Spector and Warwick basses, may be worth uping the budget and getting a second hand Corvette as it'll be similar to the quality of the fretless you have. Within your budget I seem to remember the OLP Tony Levin Stingray 5 sounding alright for the money, though it's still a cheapy. Stingray 5's have great B strings so maybe also go for an original SUB 5 from years back, the ones with the dodgy paint jobs, for around £300 -400 quid that'd be a lot of bang for your buck. Good luck!
6. Looks like a MIM P-Bass, just with an extra pickup, new paint job (red over black), new pick guard and with the jack socket moved to facilitate the extra knob needed for the new pickup. edit: the logo looks correct for period, as does the body shape, and bridge. A lot of people mod these mid priced bases and either get bored or upgrade so I personally wouldn't be suspicious of this one.
7. After market ones can work, though it's a gamble sometimes as you need to be absolutely sure that it does fit and that's not always easy through online shopping. I have mostly always had them made for me. Bass Doc here on Bass Chat did my last one. His nitro tort plates are fantastic and excellent value (cheaper than Fender too).
8.
Anyone got any ideas of some good sounds to get ? Cheers;)
There is a great internet radio station called Calm Radio, based in Canada, The subscription fee is tiny, and for that you get access to tons of channels with no adverts. They have a great Native American channel and lots of similar stuff too, lots of chilled out vibes. Well worth a peek. I have some R. Carlos Nakai, lovely Native American wind instrument player.
9. I've had a lot of basses over the years, some hardly ever need adjusting and some need them quite often. I had a Stingray once which was so constantly in need I attached the adjuster tool to the back of the headstock! Individual necks then appear to have different sensitivities to temperature change, so my advice is just to do it when it's needed. Currently my only bass/guitar which often needs one is my Sterling. I wonder if it's a coincidental Musc Man issue?
10. This is my chain, set up in a pedal board bag: I have a mini mixer which the headphones come out from. Track 1 - Bass with natural sound (Bass mostly goes through a Mark Bass head first). Track 2 - Bass with effects (a/b box splits original signal) Track 3&4 - Zoom drum machine I also have an ipod plugged into the 'aux in' so I can jam with tracks. This is a great jam station.
11. I'd say a late 80's Streamer. I once bought a 1987 Streamer purely to sell it on for a profit, which I ended up doing but not until I'd played it for a few months out of awe and wonder. I couldn't believe that I had GAS for it as Warwick basses never suited or appealed to me. I still often wonder 'what if I'd kept it' and have never been comfortable with any modern Warwick since.
12.
Yep... there goes Ol' Neil on another Crazy Horse record and tour. It's only been ten years since the last tour and longer since the last record. He's certainly flogging that cash cow to death. Sorry - there's no doubt you're a big fan, but I'm not quite sure what expect from him. He's 67, and he's still on the cutting edge.
I love your post!
13. There's been quite a bit of chat on this site lately about selling fee's, possible BC membership costs, recession etc. The guys at BC have to generate money, fair enough, we all respect that ( I hope). There are often bigger adverts and pop ups on other websites selling things I don't want, or showing something which I once googled, but bass / music adverts wouldn't do me any harm at all, especially if I knew they were contributing to a good cause. At the moment, there's only two small commercial adverts running at one time when I'm on this site. Question: How would you feel about more, or bigger adverts and pop ups being used here on Basschat to generate more cash for the cause?
14.
I recently got married, and the wife chose the song "nothing else matters" to walk down the ailse to. I think she just earned herself a couple of extra "cool points". In my eyes at least. What about everyone else?
She's a keeper! One friend chose Jeff Buckley Hallelujah, which some of us found odd due to the dark lyrics. Another friend also chose that tune when getting married in Sweden. We went over to perform at the ceremony but we decided to change the dark lyrics to better suited ones, (sorry Leonard). I'm not married yet, though I reckon my better half may chose Beach Boys or Neil Young.
15.
The dangers of internet forums, chaps (chaps in a passive sense, I believe) - intonation is so often missing, and what we'd laugh off in the pub we take umbrage at in pixellated read-out
Nice quote. (Meant in a sincere appreciative way rather than with a smug and sarcastic tone). This is my first venture onto forums. I'm generally more on the outernet (not even on facebook) so I now consider myself better educated on what to expect all round.
16.
Maybe I should have clarified my post. The 71 is original and the two 75's sport Howards work. My point being that you can't easily tell the two apart. Fake tort plates are my bette noir and I wanted to highlight the 'authenticity' of Howards tort plates. I dare say they're simple for him but it took me years to find someone who could produce something that looked right.
You're absolutely right about that, and such great value for a nitro pickguard too. Sorry if my post came across the wrong way, I just get the feeling he's really talented.
17.
Hey chum, you're the one with aggressive responses,
is that 'Chum' meant in a passive way? It's not about aggression, it's about the fact that you pick a target to springboard your belief. It's that simple.
18.
Hey guys I think I need to confess something here, and I'm a little ashamed to admit this. I'm a hard rock and metal fan from back in my early teens, and as such aspired to one day hold down the low end for a massive rock act. But recently I heard daft punk's new track, an all I want to do is chuck it all in and play in a funk band.... Has anyone else experienced similar issues?
Dude, who would have thought in 1986 that Metallica would play with an ochestra? Or in 1971 that Mick Jagger would do a camp version of a Motown tune with Bowie, or in 1968 that Macca would have done the frog song? You get my drift?!!! Embrace your evolution and 'Give Up The Funk'!!! edit: er, 'Give Up The Funk' in a bad is good.kinda way. Just think of the Parliament tune, lol!
19.
Chill out, Chilli - don't take it to heart. It's good to have a spread if opinions, keeps us all honest
I hear you man, a spreads of opinions is right on. However was there really a need for spreading a load on someone's post? The point could have been made without trying to put another persons post down, i.e. make your point and don't quote another as wrong! Ok, the Chill is chilled. Cheers.
20.
Really? I have paid the fee a few times now, paid it with pleasure and it took away the guilt of not contributing.
Wow, check you out questioning an honest opinion. You used the words 'guilty' and 'pleasure' in the same sentence. What ever floats your boat is fine by me, just don't expect the world to follow in the belief that you're right and others are wrong. No, I didn't pay the fee. And yes I sold the bass for exactly what I wanted fee free. So what? I was just commenting on my experience, get over it and leave others be.
21. Quite surprised to only see one post here, I see Howard's name and praise all over the place on the site. I had a lovely pickguard made by him, quick turnaround too. However I get the feeling pickguards are childs play for The Bass Doc and that his talents run far deeper.
22. I'd like to vouch for Bass Gear. I had a week of email communication with Barrie, it felt like to talking to an old friend about bass at most points. Most importantly, I never felt like Barrie was trying to ram a bass down my throat to buy, it was clear that bass enthusiasm comes first. I would genuinely love to buy a bass from them sometime. (did that Sterling with the messed up paint work ever come in Barrie?)
23. I saw Neil in London last night. It was spiritual. The chemistry and grooves were hypnotic, these guys are in their late 60's and yet played like it was 1978. All through the gig folks were walking out, shame they didn't understand what to expect from Crazy Horse. But to real appreciators of honest music it doesn't matter what Neil plays, it just matters that he plays. So for those who left / complained - you know where to buy a Greatest Hits CD. Much love to Neil and Crazy Horse, absolute magic.
24. Check out Slowdive - Souvlaki. I used to listen to this many moons ago. They get great textures for their guitars.
25. Even a great player like Guy can only make it sound like a hunk of sh*t. Tut, tut, Guy.
