1. I feel overall quality has slipped somewhat since Dan Lakin sold the company - particularly in the pickups. I have an Indonesian made 44-64 Custom (previously known as the Duck Dunn model). The build quality was quite good, and it’s a beautiful looking bass, however I hated the NeoPunch pickup. It was disappointing to me to buy an Indonesian made instrument for $1200 USD (the approximate cost of a US Fender) only to have to swap out the pickup. Tom
2. That is Abigail Ybarra at 5:57 of the video. She just recently retired in 2013. Tom

4. I knew Randy, not well, but I did know him. It’s a great loss for the bass world. He was a sensational player. This video is from a clinic he gave in Taiwan in 2002. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yHQUys_hZk Tom

6.
Dont mention him to a drummer friend of mine who toured with him the 80's
Ha! i also have a drummer friend who toured/recorded with Malmsteen. It didn't end well.
7. Regarding "I Want You Back," it was indeed Wilton Felder on the Jackson 5 recording. Here's the isolated track: Here's Jamerson playing the part for David Ruffin's version: Tom

9. Earlier this year, I bought a Lakland Skyline 44-64 Custom (Duck Dunn model). While I love the bass, it was fairly expensive for an Indonesian made instrument (1200 USD) and it was shipped without much else but the bass. No tools or case of any kind. It was packaged in a plastic bag inside of a cardboard case. For perspective, a US Fender P costs slightly less and ships with a molded hard case, truss rod and bridge adjustment tools, as well as a fairly comprehensive owners manual. Tom
10.
I completely disagree with the claim that flats will always sound 'wooly and dead'.
Yes, so do I. I use only Thomastik's and, to the contrary, I find them to have far superior note definition, with less overtones, than any roundwound string. They record better than any other string I've ever used. Also regarding the TI flats, I think that the low tension is overstated. Yes, they are a light string, but they're far from floppy. I find them comparable to a set of 40-100 rounds. Tom
11. My apologies for resurrecting an old thread; however, after a search, I see you are aware of that very nice Barney Miller bass part that I was going to post. I was surprised that this wasn’t mentioned. Chuck Rainey plays the bass part. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WqazleR3FE Tom
12. According to Fender, approximately 0.3 mm. http://www.fender.com/support/articles/bass-guitar-setup-guide/
13. When I was selling strings online, I had a Dingwall player as a customer. He had a fanned fret 5 string. He would order a standard long 4 string set of DR's (DR's have a generous winding length) as well as an extra long B string (40" winding). He was very happy with that set. Tom
14.
Squier CV Jazz. Case closed. I lust after high end gear, but when it comes down to it, I gig my CV weekly and it does evrrything I need. Its all in the set up for me.
I couldn’t agree more. I have a Squier CV Jazz that I got in January of last year, and it’s my main gigging bass. I installed DiMarzio Model J pickups, as they’re my preference in Jazz basses. It’s just a fabulous bass and the total cost was $450 USD, which includes $100 for the DiMarzio’s. Tom
15. Thanks to all. 16. It should be noted that the Badass II is a direct replacement for Fenders with 5 hole mounted bridges only. If the bass has the newer 3 hole mounting, you would need a Badass III. Tom
17. I have flats (TI's) on two of my basses. They sound fabulous. To me, there's nothing like flats on a P bass. Tom
18. For a short period, he played a custom build made for him by Roger Giffin. I believe that's the bass seen in this video.
19. I should first qualify my comments as these opinions are based on two Euro models that I purchased ten years ago (before Spector was using EMG TW’s). With that said, they’re exceptional. I had a Euro4 in black stain that was just stunning and sounded fabulous (it had EMG PJ’s and the Spector TonePump preamp). I sold it only because it was a very heavy bass. I regret selling it now. My Euro 4 had a maple neck and a solid maple body. I believe that newer models have maple tops over walnut/alder. This would reduce overall weight, assuming that this would be an issue for you as it was for me. My second Euro Spector, or Czechtor, is a Rebop5 which I still have. I replaced the stock EMG-HZ’s with the EMG 40-DC’s, which is what Spector was using on some USA models at the time. It’s an outstanding bass. While I have no experience with the TW’s, I would otherwise highly recommend the Euro Spectors. Tom
20. Hello, Tom Appel here from Long Island, NY. More specifically, Merrick NY, which is hometown to such luminaries as Lindsay Lohan, Debbie Gibson, Ben & Jerry, Amy Fisher etc. I’ve been playing bass since I was a teen, so that means I’ve been playing most of my life (I’m now in my fifties). I play actively in local bars and clubs, as well as the occasional recording project. For a period of ten years, I owned bassguitarstrings.us. I may have sold strings to some of you. Ultimately, I proved to be a poor businessman and I shut down the site last year. Looking forward to reading, and participating in, some valuable bass chat. Tom
