1. When you do a Harmonic you are basically just placing another "node" along the length of the string. A node is a fixed point where the string doesn't move, like the Nut, or the Bridge. Without trying to go too deep into physics, the 12th fret Harmonic is exactly half way between the Nut and the Bridge, so you're effectively dividing the string into 2 equal parts by putting you're finger there. This doubles the frequency and produces the note an octave higher than the open string. When you create a Harmonic anywhere on the string, you are just dividing the string into equal parts. The length of the string from the nut to the 5th fret, is the same as from the 5th fret to the 12th fret. Therefore if you divide the string there, at the 5th fret, you will create a tone 2 octaves higher than the open string, as it's a quarter of the length of the string. That's the reason the harmonic at the 5th fret, and the 24th fret are the same, as the lengths between: Nut <-> 5th fret (first 1/4 of the length of the string) 5th Fret <-> 12th fret (second 1/4 or 1/2) 12th Fret <-> 24th fret (3/4) and 24th fret <-> Bridge (the last 1/4) Are all equal. You've divided the string into 4 equal parts, effectively doubling the frequency of the open string, and then doubling it again to get 2 octaves above. Dividing the string into different amounts of equal lengths will produce different notes. It's all about the frequencies, and what multiples will produce that frequency. As Doddy said, the harmonic at the 7th fret is the octave + a fifth. This is the same harmonic that is found at the 19th fret, as the lengths between Nut and 7th fret, 7th fret and 19th fret, and 19th fret and the Bridge, are all equal, you've divided the string into 1/3rds. It's late, and I'm tired, so I apologise if this comes across as a rambling mush of gibberish, but I hope it helped (and also that my understanding of harmonics is correct!)

 3. That is gorgeous! Wish I could afford it
 4. I love mine Someone buy this! Great price for an early Mutron.
 5.
Very good. I had a play with one last time I was at GB Guitars in Brighton. Some great settings in it and no loss of tone at all. I'd consider it the best compact tremolo pedal I'd tried with a bass.
Have you tried the Catalinbread Valcoder? It's in a 1590A enclosure so it's TINY, there's no tone loss, you have a trimmer inside you can adjust for the gain, so it can boost or cut too if necessary, simple 2 knob (rate and depth) setup, and a blindingly bright LED that dims with the depth control, and blinks at the speed of the speed knob, giving a visual indication of both speed and depth. I love mine! True Bypass and 9v too - it's awesome!
 6. Surely you could just have a box with 2 inputs, 2 outputs, and then a footswitch which switches which channel the fx loop is active on?
 7. Never had any dealings with him, but I don't think I'll ever buy one now. Ken Smith can do one!
 8.
untested, unlike higgies design, but i quite fancied buying a OLP at one point so i could build bajamans musicman inspired preamp off freestompboxes. it looks good
What I'm building is actually based off of that design, with some small changes, like upgraded parts. A good friend of mine does the PCB's for me, and I do the rest A member of this forum already bought one of these off me to install into his OLP 5 string. He went away for a few weeks the day after he received his preamp so hasn't had a chance to fit it yet, but as you can see from Howard's review, they work great and sound "the biz" I can also build these into Stompboxes if anyone would like it in pedal form, and not have to modify their bass!
 9.
I did and you haven't answered!!!!!!!
PM replied!
 10.
Thanks for heads up Bass Doc. Who is Higgie? and how can i contact him? Garry
I AM QUAID! ...er...I mean Higgie Thanks for the review Howard. Anyone looking for one please don't hesitate to PM me for a quote on prices/build time etc!
 11. Birth year Stingray, Maple neck with 2 band EQ. My perfect Stingray I have the '89 Fretless Stingray, but my fretted is 10 years younger. *Sigh*
 12.
whilst playing with the techno/spacerock band a bloke danced his way up to me, looking very enthusiastic and wide-eyed (i.e. on drukqs)and asked me "what note are you playing ?" now - at this point in the song i'm playing a simple rhythm on bottom G, with a big filter going on and some phasing. "G" i should back at the fella with a smile he bellows "i f**kin' love G !" and danced back into the audience
Awesome! Haha A guy a couple years older than me comes up to me after a dep gig a couple weeks ago. The conversation went something like this: Him "What gear is that?" Me "It's Aguilar." Him "I use GK." Me "That's cool, I've heard good stuff about those. Only ever used one once though." Him "My band toured with *some band I can't currently remember*" Me "Oh right, that must have been great." Him "Do you know Victor Wooten?" Me "Yeah, I've met him a couple of times. Amazing player and great bloke." Him "Well I learned all his stuff and now there's nothing I can't do on bass, so I got bored and haven't played in 2 years" Me "OK I'm going to continue packing my stuff away"
 13. I managed to snag my mint condition unlined fretless Stingray, from the year of my birth (1989) with a hardcase from the States for £685 all in. Bargain.
 14.
The MXR M80 looks a handy bit of kit but a little overkill for my needs I think. I used to have a Catalinbread Serrano Picosso which was a nice little boost but I sold it to Higgie when I bought the other pre-amps as I didn't think I needed it anymore - wrong!! Will check out the Silentfly and Boss GEB7 and see if they would be worth buying, will also try the suggestion of trying to play lighter with the fingers but not sure if I can do that! Also got me thinking how Flea manages live as he has a really heavy finger style but I never noticed any drop out when he changed to the thumb?
Flea uses an MXR Micro Amp to boost his signal for slapping. I could build you one if you like
 15. I find that a lot of perceived volume loss when it comes to switching to slap isn't due to the slap technique or effects, it could be down to your fingerstyle technique! The heavier your touch is fingerstyle, the more volume loss you perceive when you come to slap. I've found the best thing to do is to try and play a bit lighter when playing fingerstyle, and let the amp do most of the work volume-wise, so when you change to slap, if anything, there will be a boost! Of course it could also be your EQ settings, but I find the above to be the case a lot of the time.
 16.
Just to answer a few questions - the neck is approximately 43mm at the nut and 64mm at the body pocket, the neck is quite shallow and even up the scale. It's very playable and the laquer has ambered nicely with age, it's great to play and deserves to be played. The markings are all there on the neck and pocket and yes the finish is original. It has two raised pole pieces at the 'A' string and there are metal plates (brass/copper?) under the Precision pickup. The link will show examples of these basses..... http://www.21frets.com/squier_jv/jvprecisionbass.htm
If the neck on this is anything like the neck on mine, it'll be fantastic to play. I've never played a better P Bass than an early JV, and this one is a bargain. Someone grab it before I do something stupid!
 17. My Channel Updated with some Chili Peppers and Toto covers
 18.
Nice one Higgie! This is on my list of "to-do's" but hadn't got around to it yet. Love this track and Tom Barney's playing!
Cheers! Feel free to use it on your site if you wanna correct it.
 19. Haha, thanks Pete Some Steely Dan to follow this week, so watch this space...
 20. Added some new videos to my Channel! Aeroplane, Show Me Your Soul, and Mellowship Slinky in B Major by the Chili Peppers, and Rosanna by Toto! Here's a little taster Any comments/crits much appreciated. Cheers
 21. You could definitely fit the Xerograph on there. Just have to bunch some pedals a bit closer to each other. It seems all the pedals on the bottom row have jacks on the top of the pedal, so just move everything to the right, and have everything up against eachother. I reckon you'd get the Xero on then! Quality board by the way, very nice indeed.
 22.
Analogman, accept nothing else
+1 I've had 3 of them. I bought the Mini Chorus with Deep mod, wasn't using it so I sold it. Then regretted it and waited ages for another one. I kept missing them, so finally settled on the normal size Chorus with the 3 way switch. Then another Mini came up so I sold the normal sized one to buy the Mini Chorus with Deep Mod again! Nothing wrong with the big box one, just needed more pedalboard space at the time! Seriously, go AnalogMan. Best Chorus pedal for Bass that I've found.
 23.
Well, I have been after an unlined fretless Musicman Stingray in Tobacco Burst with a black pickguard for some time. Couldn't locate one anywhere in that spec, so had one ordered in the next Ernie Ball production run. Order was placed Feb 15th and I received the UPS tracking details today with an anticipated delivery date for 16th May - yippee!!! I'll post some pics when it turns up safe and sound.
Awesome news Kev. Finally getting an authentic "Pino" bass eh? 3 band or 2 band EQ?
 24. Had a request for this via PM. Not perfect I don't think, as I did it quickly quite a while ago, but should give you more than a head start!
 25.
I'm surprised at your thoughts on the XXL. I've not tried it personally (my gf promised me one for christmas but it still hasn't appeared ) but when I spoke to the guy from Karnivool he said it didn't require a clean blend as the pedal didn't cut any low end. Are you using the guitar or bass version?
+1. Both Bass XXLs I've had were massively low end friendly.
