1. Was discussing his songs this afternoon, got home and read that he'd died, so so sad, his music's been part of my life for 40 years or more, so hard to believe he's gone. So glad I saw him in Hammersmith 20 years ago, so sad i will never see him him again. A giant amongst musical pygmies.
2.
Saw a poster for that on the A420 by Watchfield. Sadly I am away this weekend (or not so sadly - venturing to ye Smoke with credit card in hand...)
It's very near Watchfield, but on the other side of the 420.
3. A member of my band organizes this festival on a small airfield at Shrivenham, near Swindon, so I thought I ought to plug it. Starts round about now, bands playing from six this evening (we're on at eight), food, drink, flying until Saturday night. More info Come and say hello if you are there!
4. I've got a US standard Jazz in that finish, plays beautifully but never leaves the case as the colour puts me off.
5. I used to have a copy of Dashiell Hadayat's 'Obsolete' in the original wallpaper cover, another rarity dumped by a bitter ex
6.
An original UA edition of Can's 'Tago Mago" (with the pocket sleeve)
You mean like the one my ex gave away at a car boot sale after we split?...not bitter, not at all.
7. I walked to our gig last night, in my local a couple of hundred yards away. i keep an amp down there for jams etc, so took rucksack of leads and a couples of basses. The rest of the band drove though! Hottest gig this year, soaked after 2 or 3 songs.

Fave guitar solo?

Thanks for posting the RG link, what an incredible musician he was. RIP Rory.
9. As I stated somewhere before, I definitely have a MiM Fender 60s Jazz bass non road worn in nitro, sunburst, came with a hardshell tweed case, new about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Lovely instrument, sounds and feels better than my 2008 US standard J. Quite a rare beast at the moment, though, I just struck lucky.
10.
I don't think the classic series are Nitro. If we are talking about the same classic series (MIM). The two I played were very thick poly finish. As suggested, highway ones, a good bass for a good price if you can source one second hand. The new American Special series has a wood stained finish which I played recently and is rather nice. Aside from that you can do what I did, and buy a very nice example of the bass you want second hand and refinish it in Nitro. I'm an idiot, and I managed to do it. However I was going for the worn look. If I'd been aiming for a flawless finish I would have ballsed it right up.
My 2013 60s classic jazz bass is definitely nitro finish.
11. I have a precision as back up for my jazz bass, in some circles that's seen as pretty damn radical.
12. We played a blinding couple of sets to about a dozen people. When we were booked they hadn't considered the effect of a local festival and town carnival on the same weekend. Still, we got paid, enjoyed ourselves and brought a little pleasure into the lives of those who were there. Rebooking likely, hopefully at a quieter time of year.
13. I play for The Wirebirds, blues-rock pub band. The band was formed at the end of April and we are playing our fifth gig tonight (at the Crawley Inn, just outside Witney in Oxfordshire). http://www.facebook.com/TheWirebirds.UK
14. I started this thread two months ago and am about to load my Ashdown 410 into the car for the second gig this week, so looking forward to my Barefaced being ready (delays are due to my choice of cab, no blame directed towards Alex and co at all). But...my back is pleading for release from carrying this bloody great 410 up and down the stairs!
15. Hi Rob, Living close to Oxford I would consider coming along if I knew what sort of music you guys play. Unfortunately, the link in your sig doesn't want to work.
16.
FinnDave - How do you think it compares with your standard US J?
Several weeks and a couple of gigs later, the US standard still has not left its case, the classic is my number one bass at the moment.
17. Third gig with my current band, just two months since we first played together. Played on my home territory so a lot of eyes on me,but went down well, large enthusiastic audience, pub happy and wants us back.
18.
no no no no no..... you can't have fractions of a millimetre.. fractions are related to Imperial measurement ie 1/4" etc, millimetres are metric so you MUST use a decimal point such as 0.5 Phew
So you wouldn't allow .5 inches? Or allow engineering draftsmen to specify measurements in thousands of an inch? Decimals and metric aren't the same, they are both an unholy alliance but by different devils.
19.
Ha ha! That's just the tip of the iceberg mate! Back OT - that's a lovely looking J Dave. For me the only improvement would be a 70s style neck with pearl blocks... which would stop it being a 60s "classic" of course...
Our tastes differ, I actively avoid block markers on the neck, preferring the look of the wood and small dots. I also dislike the appearance of maple fingerboards, they always look anaemic to my eyes.
20.
FinnDave - How do you think it compares with your standard US J?
Difficult question to answer. Both very good basses, but at the moment I prefer the Classic as it has more character and I like the sound. I am seriously considering selling the US standard as I don't have room for many instruments. I have not taken the US standard out of the case since buying the classic, but it's still less than a week since i bought it.
21. Yes, 2013 version of the Classic 60s JB. Don't think there are many in the shops yet, had some trouble tracking one down, but it was well worth it.
22.
thanks I did not know that - yes nitro is definitely an improvement worth having
The case is pretty good as well, nothing like the cardboard Thomann tweed case I had a few years ago.
23. Baptized the new bass this evening at band rehearsal, very pleased with it. Sounded great and was comfortable to play. Appearance was much admired by the rest of the band.
24.
Looks glorious.
Cheers, sounds pretty good too!
25. Definitely nitro, clearly stated on the box it all came in, plus it smells slightly of it. Definitely looks different to the poly finished one I used to have. This is a new range, and I had trouble tracking any down over here, lots of places waiting for stock.
