1.
But that'll take the OP the best part of thirty years! He doesn't want to do that, he's 22!
Good point, I'm at the other end of that tunnel, and being 22 doesn't seem anything like as long ago as being 50 something must seem to a 22 year old!
2. I'd say carry on treating music as a serious hobby, get yourself a well paid job, pay off the mortgage, retire early with a decent pension and then turn to music full time. Kind of what I have done, and although the music career is exactly setting the world on fire, I do get to play with some good people, including our Ms Haan.
3. Still here, and Precision still languishing in the corner, caseless!
4. Self taught, copying stuff I liked on records back in the 70s. Worked out a certain amount of theory from scratch, if I'm doing it wrong I'll just carry on doing it wrong, too old and set in my ways to change now.
5. First time at a new pub, poor acoustics but enthusiastic audience. A couple of the dancers grabbed our pair of maracas off the table and only one was found at the end of the gig. Lots of praise for the band and the billed 'famous singer' Jenny Haan, hopefully leading to some regular work there. Played my newly acquired CiJ Fender Precision 63 replica, sounds and feels great.
6. Hmm, tricky...three phones interacting would not be easy to repeat...I think I'll just carry on recording gigs and hope we get another which hits the spot as well as that one did.
7. My 'new' (to me) Precision wants a decent hard case, but I can't get one until the Jack Casady is sold....please help preserve an endangered CiJ 63 replica P bass!
8. Oxford's right on my doorstep, could be an interesting experiment.
9. Thank you for setting us straight on that, Andrew. Would have been more fun to let us chase our tails for a day or two before unleashing the truth, though! Great strings, used them for years.
10. I'm always 100% sure if myself, even when proved wrong
11. Dang, I was hoping for the full 5 page debate here, not expecting you to capitulate at the first challenge! Can you tell I'm a tad bored today? I spent all day out on my bike yesterday and it's either sit here discussing the intimate details of bass strings or carry on sorting out the band's accounts. You can see my dilemma!
12. Definitely not over-bright, even when new. I like a bit of twang on my Jazz basses, which these strings have but the 160s with their heavier top strings lack. I think Mr Indiscreet is trying to pull a fast one here, I'm not sure there is such as a thing as a D'addario XL string. The packets on my shelf have D'Addario XL in big letters n the front, and EXL160 under that. XL seems to cover a wide range of their strings, but can't see any bass strings that are just XL. 13. I use them on my jazz basses, and the slightly heavier EXL-160 on my Precisions. Good strings (well, I obviously think that or I wouldn't keep using them!). I usually buy them as twin packs, saves a bit if money and means I usually have a spare set or two if needed.
14. Cheers, I'll see if I can figure these out over the next few days.
15.
You made it that far?
I was just making sure I'd seen them all.
16. I made an interesting discover, if you scroll through the pictures, at the end there are a couple of pics of a Fender Precision!
17. Re bumped as there are now too many basses here! Seriously thinking about getting shot of a Precision and a Jazz and just settling down to one of each.
18. Thanks, I will look at how Audacity can help as I use that as an editing tool already. I wasn't aware it could do more.
19.
Its happened to me a few times on a long gig. I figured out in my case it was dehydration.
I've never tried that, but I will now. Next time I am stumped by a problem, I'll take the bass out of its case, lie in there myself, and wait for inspiration to strike.
20. Played in West Wycombe but the pull of Chinnor Bike Dayz nearby proved too much of an attraction for the largely biker clientele. Even the landlord went there instead of staying in his pub! Got off to a strange start when Jenny got lost on the way (mistyped postcode into satnav, took her two hours to do what should have been a one hour journey) so we had to start without her. She arrived and jumped straight up to join in on second song. Place slowly filled up, and we had a satisfactory evening, though it would have been better with more of an audience.
21. I wonder if anyone can offer a few words of advice on this. Last weekend we played at a biker rally and recorded the second set (because I forgot to set up the recorder for the first!). Because there was nowhere to leave the recorder (Yamaha pocket track) I place in Ms. Haan's assistant's hand bag (with her assistance, of course) with just the mics, covered by the pop shield, sticking out. We played a pretty good set, and the sound recorded pretty well for such an ad hoc arrangement, and is a useful record of how we sound in full flow, much more 'us' than any studio recordings we have made. The problem is that I forgot to ask Eve (assistant) whether she had a mobile phone switched on. I only released my mistake when I played the recording back the following day. In fact, she had three mobiles in there, all switched on. The signal breakthough is intermittent, and not overwhelming, but it definitely spoils the recording. Is there any way of filtering this out without ruining the music? We will be recording tonight's gig, this time without mobiles anywhere near, but last week's was a good high energy performance and the basic sound recorded well on most tracks and we would like to use a few on our facebook page to help publicise the band. All advice gratefully received.
22. Ah well, have a good gig yourself. Hopefully a few more over your way in the pipeline for us, so our paths will cross eventually.
23. Epiphone still available, unfortunately I have already spent the money I hope to get for it!
24. We're loading up and heading eastwards again this evening back to the Dashwood Arms at West Wycombe for a fourth of July gig (one of the band is from Montana and Jenny spent her formative years at high school in San Francisco). Same songs, just with a more American accent! Come and say hello if you're there (best wait until we're set up or you'll find yourself carrying something!)
25. Did our stint as house band at local open mic.Just the band this time, no Jenny. I was the only bass player there so was on all night, played with some interesting people and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Received several compliments on my playing, free chilli for the performers and the promise of another paid gig there soon. Not bad for a tuesday!
