I bought this recently as I love Danny Thompson's playing with John Martyn and David Sylvian. It was recorded in 1991 (and it shows in the picture quality) but its really quite inspiring. Its a bit slow off the mark (reminiscences about washtub basses etc) but once he gets into playing 'Victoria' its wonderful stuff. In particular I had always wondered about his superb tone and sustain and I discovered that he raised the nut (making it very gruelling for his left hand) in order to deliver the sort of volume and sustain he gets with open strings. I reckon his left and right hands must be like Popeye's! No wonder my wimpy hands cannot deliver anything like his type of tone. This does not come on at all even if you leave it for several minutes, unless I boost the gain and master and then drop back. It's very odd. I wonder is it a pot problem, a problem with cab compatibility or a straigt electrical fault?

I recently picked up a used Mesa Walkabout from the forum. Very quickly it developed a very annoying fault. That is, when I switch it on there is no volume and even touching the end of the instrument lead with it plugged in makes absolutely no sound. By trial and error I have discovered that if I turn the gain full on and turn up the master volume to max it jumps - LOUDLY - into life. I can then roll off the gain and master and use as normal. So does anyone have any idea what is happening here? It's very odd and very frustrating and I worry about the damage to my cab that starting on max will do?

I am thinking of replacing my Full Circle pickup but this requires me to replace the bridge wheel adjusters. I can only find them on sale in US or at a vastly inflated price (£40 or more; more than twice the US price) by one or two UK retailers. Does anyone have any spares they are happy to sell me? Well drurb on the Talkbass thread has just reported back after using the Ehrlund with a Big band and is raving about it. Sounds the way to go. Just got to figure how I replace the Full Circle wheels on my bridge with identical size adjusters ....

The nicest low tension steel I have tried are Kolstein Heritage. Not massively pricey (cost just over £100 if you import from Gollihur's in US). Cheapest option will be Innovations

I learned about six songs for my auditions for Rattlin Bone and All The Queens Ravens. I reckon that's plenty to demonstrate commitment and your abilities. Best of luck matey!

Jonas Lohse at Kontrabass Atelier in Germany sells the Ehrlund with a shortened cable and a different jack, maybe for the reasons highlighted on TalkBass?
