1.
What case would that be?
Was having a joke at his sartorial taste Steve. Bit of levity mate
2. Toots playing 'Three views...' with Jaco on piano http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBhoDaS5SKQ
3. Jeff Berlin? I rest my case
4. Sounds promising
5.
Nice. Wow! Can you tell me more about that bass Walbassist? I guess it's pre-CBS, Don't think I have seen one with those type knobs, only the old stack knob Jazz's? I have a spare set of covers lying around, looking at yours make me want to put them on my CIJ P fretless.
Looks like a P-Retro addition. I think walbassist's Precision is early 70s. It really is a beauty!
6. I look forward to you 'taking one for the team' and trying out the Ehrlund! I might well end up buying one of these too, so keen to see your review once you've gigged it
7. Been gigging DB for a couple of years now but when I was gigging electric (a P bass), it was volume full on, treble rolled off slightly and don't touch for whole set! Worked for me in noisy guitar-led rock/punk bands. Echoing the above, its hard enough for me to remember lines and play accurately without twiddling knobs each song
8. This blog on TalkBass about the Ehrlund (written by one of the better known DB contributors to the forum) might be of interest http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f4/ehrlund-blog-sort-909299/
9.
Heya guys. Thanks for the recommendations so far. Sort of hoping it would be a luthier rather then a shop doing it. The Gallery is a bit far and when I visited for the first time the other day, the guy seemed more interested in his laptop then anything else.
I have been in and Alex (the sales manager) has seemed a bit distant and uninterested at times. However, if you engage him he is a very nice chap and very helpful. My guess is there are so many tyre kickers he doesn't jump to attention each time a customer enters the shop - but he is a good guy if you start a dialogue. And the workshop team (esp Martin) are top quality - and that is after all what you are after
10.
+1 to that. Big fan of the fretless P myself.....
now that is a proper tort s/p, beautiful
11. Very nice indeed Nick. Good work mate
12.
do they come out spot on from a tracing ?
Sorry for silly-sounding answer but I guess it depends on the accuracy of the tracing. Its much better to send Howard the original I would guess so he can cut to exact proportions and - most importantly - site the screw holes identically. I am just the monkey, best to drop a PM directly to Bass Doc
13. Moving this beautiful instrument back up for sale again as Mr_Bassman (aka Keith) is selling his removable neck version of the same bass and I would like to replace mine with his, for added flexibility with travelling. Keith's is newer (was originally bought in NYC by BC'er Greg Cordez) and worth a bit more than mine, so I have to sell first in order to buy
14. Not sure about a drop-in replacement but as a backstop you could send a tracing of (or the original pickguard) to Howard the Bass Doc and he will make you a top quality replacement
15. Its a new signature 5-stringer, tuned E-C. Will cost a cool $9,999 http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2012/08/01/alembic-unveils-stanley-clarke-signature-deluxe-5-string-bass/
16. He could be a wonderful composer too, when he set his mind to it. 'Three views of a secret' is a beautiful track. Here's the Weather Report original, I couldn't find a link for Jaco's 'Word of Mouth' big band version (which I prefer)
17.
BTW is it the use of Europe or Nirvana that you object to?
To quote Louis Armstrong "If you have to ask, you'll never know"
18. Just heard this on the radio, a mix of Smells like teen spirit and Final countdown. Could it get any more smart@arsed and plain wrong than this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr06IyWMf4Y
19. Here are some sound files comparing a number of mic's and pickups, including the Ehrlund http://doublebassguide.com/?p=654 To my mind the Ehrlund and DPA 4099 ace it, including versus the pickup on my DB (Full Circle). Got me thinking too ...
20. Traded for a super nice fretless Fender
21. Just to be clear, having had a trade offer for one of the remaining pedals, these are for sale only as my band's guitarist is looking to raise cash towards a new acoustic guitar amp.
22. Not sure if I've posted this already. This is a gig where our mandolin player couldn't make it and I used the Takamine acoustic rather than DB. Sound quality not great but you get the picture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuaFpXdnJyU&feature=channel&list=UL
23. Top work, at that rate of progress you will be the best bass player on BC within 2 years
24. Around the start of his Weather Report stint he played on a Pat Metheny album called Bright Size Life which I think contains some of his freshest playing. Here is a taster http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX2cPUs-ot0
25. If you want to read about his life I recommend this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jaco-Extraordinary-Tragic-Life-Pastorius/dp/0879308591
