1. Best of luck Jack. Would have loved to have been there but wending my way back to UK from bella Italia (biz not pleasure). Root fifth. And repeat. Until the end
2.
Congratulations, Clarky, this the clumsiest metaphor I have ever seen on Basschat!
yay! Do I win a prize? A roll of velcro seems popular round here, although I wouldn't mind a course in Scottish flamenco-country dancing
3.
'Celtic/flamenco mix'? I might throw up!
The world moves on Kev! You don't need to bash flints together to make fire any more
4. Just wow. Saw Vicente Amigo at the Union Chapel in Islington tonight. Played a bunch of older straight-ahead flamenco favorites and his latest celtic/flamenco mix album Tierra in its entirety (excerpt below). Utterly stunning musicianship and played with real fire and passion. SImply unforgettable gig You would probably have hated it Kev/Spoombung
5. Yep, guess who? Roger bought a neat piezo-friendly DI pedal off me. As ever, seamless transaction
6. Cool, cheers Lozz. We should at least be rehearsed properly for that one - band practice tonight (first in over a month due to holidays) is off as drummer and one of two vocalists ill, so Alleycat gig will be a heroic success or not!
7. If anyone wants to hear the difference between some of the strings mentioned above, this is a great site. Click on the link called Saiten (strings) and there's a grid of various string types, played different ways (walking, groove, long tones etc) http://www.hervejeanne.de
8. Good stuff Roger, PM'ing you back in a sec
9. Hi all, we are playing an early (9pm) half hour support set at the Alleycat in Denmark Street on this coming Friday and a headlining gig at Paper Dress Vintage in Shoreditch on Weds 9th October. Be great to see some of you BCers
10. I am really liking the debut album by Phillious Williams, called Stay Ugly Beautiful. They call themselves 'heavy Western' and are a mix of blues, Americana and spaghetti western soundtrack. They are London based (my lot have upported them) and I predict they will go places Here's a live clip as a flavour http://leefest.org.uk/phillious-williams/
11. Price drop - £75 posted
12. I loved the tone of Animas but I found I couldn't play as fast as with Spiros (some of my band's stuff has quite fast triplet-y Spanish bits and I kept fluffing those). I would be quite interested at some stage to try some Garbo Lights, which are similar in size to Animas but 2kg lower tension per string. But I've spent more than enough on strings for now! Edit: I put some Presto Nylonwound Ultralights (gut-alike strings) on my Baby Bass this week, in an effort to make it feel and sound more DB-like and so far they are working out really well. I took it to the BassBash yesterday and everyone seemed to like the tone and feel
13. Over £1000 for charity, Colin. Thats absolutely bazzing! Well done to us all, collective BC hug
14. But seriously (folks), looking forward to your always-fab photos Silvia. Regarding the day, I especially enjoyed the Q&A with Paul and Dave - very inspirational. And my favourite moment of the day was being able to tell Dave Swift to be quiet (during my inept talk on DB). Yes, me, blagging rubbish bass player telling 23 year pro Dave Swift to be quiet. Still makes me giggle. He was so nice about it too. There's a message there. Nice people do well
15. Here you go. Pic 1. Bluejay will be along with more
16. I liked it so much I left my bag of double bass preamps there and so I have to drive back to collect them
17. Got hold of NIk, no woz
18. OK, I know most of us playing ( or blagging their way on) DB are forever experimenting with strings to get the sound we have in our heads and that different basses suit different strings better. Butt ... I would be interested to see what y'all currently have as your preferred strings and why (while recognising the answer could be different in a couple of months time!) I'll start - after working my way through endless permutations I have ended up with E Spiro Mittel A/D/G Pirastro Oliv Its the closest I've got to that 'LaFaro sound'. My only gripe is the tuning stability of the Olivs which swings massively with the weather and humidity. I also love Danny Thompson 's growly Spirocore sound but I don't have the hand strength to replicate the buzz/growl that he gets with those strings
19. David just sold me a beautiful acoustic bass. Exactly as described and in wonderful, as-new condition. Lots of communication all the way through. Basically, all good Thanks David!
20. I still don't see why use two piezo pickups. Some (make that nearly all) of the world's greatest DB players amplify with one pickup, unless they are blending a piezo and a microphone. A single BassMax should be more than adequate and - if not - try a different piezo (I like the Full Circle, others like the Realist or the twin-wing piezo pickups like the Shadow SH950 or Underwood which do what your twin arrangement does with the one pickup). Then run your single pickup into a preamp (PlatPro or other) via Radial A/B switcher or similar (so you can select between DB and electric bass) into quarter inch jack. There are also clever things you can do with effects send/return but I'm too dumb to be able to work that out! PTB doubles using a Mini CMD121P. Drop him a PM
21.
Quite a few of Andy's basses are sold on commission so sometimes the owner will be setting the opening price (although Andy gives great advice on price estimates).
I've no complaints at all. I sold for a fair price and my guess is the seller has just added on Andy's commission to break even. Even if he hasn't , its not my bass any more and none of my business!
22.
It does look quite nice to me. How much did you sell it for?
About that price, less Andy Baxter's commission.
23. Just looked at his other listings and spotted my old 63 refin which I only sold on BassChat a few months ago http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1963-FENDER-PRECISION-BASS-OLYMPIC-WHITE-REFINISH-/181203110851?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2a308c0bc3
