WelI I have only had the strings on my bass a few days and have not gigged them yet so its a bit early. However first impressions are they feel quite similar to Silver Slaps but narrower gauge. Very low tension. There is a distinct rich gut sound to the sound, despite the tynex wrapping but probably more finger noise than plain guts (which I expect to reduce as they break in). There is a clear LaFaro/Haden sound to them which is exactly what I was after and the low/no maintenance is a plus vs normal guts. They are still stretching but not ridiculously so - each time I tune up they are maybe half a tone out. I have an Oliv G in my string drawer and that sounds slightly richer I would say and if you do arco (I don't) I suspect it would be infinitely preferable to a Goldentone G which looks like it would be a pig to bow. Having down some more research, Pirastro also make a tynex wrapped gut (in the Pizzicato set) which you can buy individual strings from at the bassico website, but they are pricey -

From a Goldentone set (I only wanted the tynex-wrapped gut D and G from this set, which are like the famed Golden Spirals played by LaFaro, Haden etc*). [url="http://www.labella.com/products/2000l-goldentone/"]http://www.labella.c...00l-goldentone/[/url] The E and A are chrome steel rapped around a rope core and - based on the A (which I put on my bass for about one minute; I haven't even unwrapped the E) - a bit like less growly Spirocores, and sort of light/medium tension. Looks great Mark. if I can make one tiny suggestion? A real tort plate from spitfire-whatever-his-name-is (check out the "wheer has all the decenttort gone" thread) would make your bass complete and IMHO indistinguishable from a real McCoy. [/quote] In answer to your questions, I tried shifting my right hand position on the Jazz (which, as someone pointed out earlier, one tends to play closer to the bridge than on a Precision) and it made no difference. The sound (obviously the two basses differ) doesn't influence my question, its about the comfort and feel of playing on the hands. Given family/neighbours etc I often practice unamplified and it was in this context I posted my OP. I do want to try swapping the old La Bellas on to my Jazz but I am slightly put off by the fact that I will have to alter the truss rod again - I have already tweaked it several times) and I don't want to get closer to stripping the screw holes for the neck (remember its a 62 reissue so there is no convenient truss rod adjuster visible and the neck has to be taken off, at least partialy to adjust)

Maybe that affects the tone more with these strings? [/quote] Well the P and J are both early 1980s Squier JV reissues patterned off the 1962 originals and thus I assume each has an alder body. They both have a rosewood board and maple neck. So as far as I can tell, the body woods wouldn't really make much/any difference

I am always playing around with strings. I recently acquired a 1983 JV Precision with La Bella standard gauge flats (45-105) on and love these strings. So I thought I'd buy a set for my JV Jazz ... and they don't play anything like as nicely (tension feels different, can't get action as low as I can with lighter gauge Joe Osborn flats). Why is this so? A Fender BBOT bridge is a Fender BBOT of bridge, the scale length is the same 34", the after-lengths to tuners are near identical so the only difference is the spacing of the strings. Is it psychological, to do with the strings feeling more crowded due to string spacing? Dunno. Either way, I took them off and put back on the Joe Osborn flats which suit my Jazz much better. I have also found this in the past with other strings (eg TI Flats and Ernie Ball nickel rounds) Just seems odd. Oh and I am bored

Try playing a double bass with gut strings. Overnight they can go sharp or flat a whole tone just based on temperature/humidity changes and sometimes they won't even last a whole tune before going out -

Thanks gents, it's actually nicer than a regular US Jazz too as a result of Wizard pickups. Hmmm am starting to consider selling my JV Precision and keeping this instead, even though it would leave me with two Jazzes??? Anyway last post from me for 36 hours lest I get slapped (again) for over bumping
