1.
If this had the level of production that One Direction has, it would sound infinitely better. Sounds better already. Does make you wonder - why does it sound better?
i think it shows that music is music. it'a series of notes. But the problem with so much of today's music is all the guts and soul has been sucked out of it in an effort to achieve some assembly line, homogenous pablum that industry people think is the safe way to go.
 2. Oh, wait a minute -- here's one by an 8 year old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvSzBdqzgnw
 3. Yngwie never could decide whether he wanted to be a classical musician, a rock star, a featured virtuoso player, a showman or a band member. So he tried to do all of them -- and overdid them all. And consequently he never got much recognition beyond being a novelty. Now, he's a parody of the excessive overplayer. The problem with Yngwie musically is a great as his technique may be, he plays every note he knows in every song. So after 5 mintes, you've heard all you're going to hear. And that's boring. And that's why he never went too far. There are tens of thousands of guys (and gals, and even children) who can play that fast. Yngwie showed everyone that the rabbit is in the hat. Now, ow one cares. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmALm66sENs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LskRHAEioVk
 4. A whammy works on higher frequencies, on a bass you can just slide.
 5. ...with an aggressive bass player. lol Here's one take by one person. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1PZilMzaFo
 6.
Scott LaFaro started playing music young though. He picked up bass when he was entering music college---he was already a very keen (and good) musician. I don't disagree with the point you're making, just that you've picked an example that doesn't best illustrate it.
I'm not so sure that's so relevant. Lots of musicians start with another instrument or drawing pictures or writing stories or doing something artistic. It all helps of course, but playing a specific instrument requires input on THAT instrument. If you never touched a saxophone and started playing now, you'd have some advantages but it would still take years just to be somewhat proficient. LaFaro became a master in a matter in just a few years. I'd say that's a damn good example.
 7. It depends of what you're looking for. I find tubes, be it pre-amps or amps, provide a warmer, rounder tone at lower volumes but add a bit of distortion at higher volumes. Since I prefer my sound to be ultra clean, they're not for me, but the only way to know if you'll like it is to try it.
 8. I think there are two different frames of thought here. If it's about playing well enough to enjoy it, then it's all subjective. That's having a hobby. I was talking about excelling at something and not letting a late start deter you. As for LaFaro, he's a freak and the fact that he reinvented the instrument that he played for just a few years shows he was a genius among geniuses. But it also negates the notion that no one gets good unless they start very young or play for X amount of years. It comes down to talent, desire and commitment.
 9.
Scott LaFaro is probably not the best example. His father studied under the well known violinist and teacher Otakar Sevcik then played in some of the best bands of the day including the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and with the Dorsey Brothers. Scott played the piano and then the bass clarinet before taking up the bass. He also had perfect pitch and of course as has already been said he was a genius!
But that's the point. Those with more talent will exceed over those who simply put the time in.
 10. They say nobody gets great unless they start playing at a very young age. They say you can't be great until you surpass playing for 10,000 hours. Well...if it's the amount of hours put in, then all old people would be better than all younger people and that's just not so. And many artists started a little later, or bloomed later in life. I also believe that whatever you learn between the ages of 10 and 15 can be learned in one year as an adult because your comprehension is so much better. But there is no better example that dismisses all of these beliefs than Scott LaFaro. He was a genius. He re-invented the instrument. He played with a swing and a sense of voice leading that was unparalleled. His tone was ungodly and his intonation was frighteningly precise. He was miles ahead of everyone else and his work still holds up as masterful today. When he died, he'd been playing for just 6 years.
 11.
There's not enough info in the OP. What were the circumstances during their set? Did the cab give up during their set, was it noticeable? Did you only notice the problem when you started playing? What happened after the band left? Any witnesses? If so what did they see/hear that might help you? So far you have not stated any evidence.
That's the point. How do you prove it? I once had a guy tell me, "If I damage your bass I'll pay for it." I said to him; "I I tell you there's a scratch on it that wasn't there before, you're going to buy me a new bass? " No you're not. Sorry, that's my policy. He may think I'm a dick but he's the dick for thinking he could just take whatever he wants.
 12. What's to do? You've been vandalized. Take it as a not so cheap lesson. I have a simple answer when someone asks to use my equipment. I say; "no." It works really well. If they get belligerent it just confirms that I did the right thing. if they can't respect your wishes how can you expect them to respect your property?
 13. Does anyone know where I can find, or download a transcription to the Scott LaFaro solo for this tune? Can't seem to find a version online. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
 14.
He spoke to her. She means too precise. He's not feeling the music.
Hmmm, I think you have to read between the lines with that as well. Does she mean too stiff? Or maybe she just doesn't like him.
 15. Everybody is being too literal. She may not know how to describe what she wants, but she knows there's something she doesn't like. That can't be ignored. It's like when musicians say "the audience doesn't know what's good." Oh yes they do. They just may not be able to articulate it. Perhaps, "too clean" means too bright or too thin or too punchy or nat fat enough. Who knows. But don't discount it. Listen and learn.
 16. It's funny how bass players like stuff that sounds like it's from the 70's. I do too, though I tend to lean toward the more rock/pop style. Funk is always fun to play but I've come to conclusion that anytime you have a song with a solo that is longer than 32 measures ( especially if it's over one chord) no woman on earth is going to want listen to it. And unless it's the John Coltrane quartet, I don't blame her. : ) (I'm being facetious -- no need to make mention of women who like 16 bar solos. lol).
 17. Here's a cover of Mister Kite where the bassist plays all the parts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojp2qXuGEuE
 18.
I've not been on here for a while as I'm on a UK tour. When i left you were being a nob...I see nothing has changed. As for you knowing music theory, when you first showed up a chord sequence in the beatles thread was being discussed. You tried that patronising sh*t on me to show i was wrong, however i was right and showed you that you was wrong. You wasn't so smug then. So your claim to knowing music theory is flimsy.
I'd like to see that thread. I believe you're mistaken. And are you saying I'm wrong in this case with the Killers song? Do you have any idea what you;re talking about? Because theory is math, it's either right or wrong. So, it sounds like you're the one being a bit nobbish I'd say.
 19.
It must be a difficult world where you're always right, everyone else is always wrong and those wrong people start ganging up on you to tell you you're not right after all. . .
\ I wouldn't know about that. That's certainly not the case in my life. But I know music theory and I know when I'm falsely accused of something and I know that people can be petty and ridiculous at times so it actually all makes sense.
 20.
If the "guy who's getting piled on" didn't keep trying to pick fights with people then the "mob" wouldn't be telling him he's continually out of order. Sounds like a. Bit of paranoia creeping in here. I still think you simply didn't answer a very straightforward question and seemed to try and go out of your way to basically tell the OP that he didn't even know how to ask the question in the first place. That's quite simply rude and the "mob" are quite right to say it's not really very nice. To then continually say you deserved to be thanked for telling the OP he didn't know how to ask a question, and without ever actually even answering it, beggars belief It's not like this is an isolated event either, seems to be happening again and again. I find it hard to believe that you genuinely think the people here are somehow ganging up on you for some obscure reason known only to them. . .
I'm picking fights? That's very funny. And I did answer his question. You just weren't paying attention. Oh, I know why people are ganging up. Because there's strength in numbers. If its okay for a bunch of other people to do it, it's easy to join in and be one of the crowd. Hell, read your own post. You don't even know what occurred and you're parroting the accusations. It's fascinating actually.
 21.
You may want to consider your use of the written word if you can't "take a little direction". See, I can play that game too!

You're a bit of a lost cause then. As a few people even pointed out your advice was at best inaccurate as there are no sharps in flat keys so why you're so smug I'm not sure. Maybe it's worth starting a thread in 'theory and technique' to see if you can get this misunderstanding ironed out before you go offering anymore advice. I'm out too.
That is such bull sh*te and you know it. You're REALLY going to make a point of an F# being called an Gb? I mean REALLY?!?! Thats REALLY bothers you? Come ON. You are so obviously grasping at straws to try to find fault. Lamest post yet.
 22.
Excuse me ! It's not about taking direction! I AM a pro musician. It's about your condescending manner ! I'm out.
I wasn't even talking to you.
 23.
Surely a pattern can be noted by now, your replies often evoke a less than charitable reply from the rest of us. It's maybe worth assessing your attempts at help because on this occasion your reply on the face of things appeared belittling and condescending where no such attitude was required. The fact that it has been noted by more than a few people is not a coincidence and it's very possible you're getting a kick from it, but if this is a fact that is to pass you by blindly then the one thing to take away from this is to maybe look at how you choose to word stuff to other people. It's a friendly forum by and large, your reply was far from friendly.
Nah, I'm good. I know human nature. As Mark Twain said: "Make people think they're thinking and they'll love you, but really make them think and they'll hate you." I get message boards.. It's a mob mentality. No one is going to speak up for the guy who's getting piled on. And no one likes to be proven wrong. I was just being straightforward. If someone helped me and was a little gruff I'd say THANK YOU. But it seems some people are more concerned with whether it's done to their liking. Well, I have no time for that and sure as hell am not going to worry about it. And yes, Abm7 has a Eb and Gb, pedantically speaking. : )
 24. Eh, I think some of you are just looking for a reason to pile on. My point to the OP was that if he needs help, it'd make sense to be as clear as possible. I never heard the song so i had to do a bit of deciphering from his post to find out how to explain it. Not everyone may go to the same lengths. And, un, yeah, you're welcome. And even when my point of a B triad being the same as a Abm7, STILL, it isn't good enough. Geez, everyone is so sensitive. Maybe it's a Gen Y thing. They can't take criticism without crying and demanding an apology if they fart and the world doesn't applaud. You can all go on about how rude I am -- it gives everyone a free shot to insult me. That's fine. But you may not want to reconsider being a musician if you can't take the slightest bit of direction.
