  1. @Bill Fitzmaurice, my Bassman 1x15 cab has this wadding, but only on the back. Are there any benefits in covering all the internal surfaces?
  2. Nickel. I'm 60, it's not my only bass, and I play flats. They'll see me out. I've had stainless fitted on 6 string guitars, and I can really see why that makes sense. Bending strings is a whole new ballgame on stainless, effortlessly smooth. However, with stainless, the feel does change quite a lot, and it's going to take enough getting used to going from very low frets to new ones, plus I do like the feel of nickel on basses. Rob
  3. Further to this. I have had a Luthier recommended to me by Ged Green in Cheadle. Ged was the man in these parts for top notch work, and I've used him for decades, but he has now hung up his tools to retire. He has recommended Jim Fleeting - https://www.jimfleetingguitars.com/ In my conversations with Ged, he recommended I use Jescar 47104 fretwire, and in a subsequent conversation with Jim, he said the same, so that's what I'm having fitted. It will also get a new bone nut. I drove it down to his workshop this morning and dropped it off. I'll post pics of the completed work and my first impressions in a few weeks when I get it back. Rob
  4. Ok chaps, I'm going to get my '73 sunburst/rosewood/tort Jazz bass refretted. What is the modern equivalent wire these days which compares to what was fitted originally? Also, would you go slightly bigger, and what would you use if you did? Thanks muchly, Rob
  5. Has anyone used Paul Everson in Carnforth for a refret? My vintage jazz needs it now. I've asked Ged Green who he recommends (Ged used to do all my work but has now retired), and he recommended Jim Fleeting, who's work does look great, but in the process of searching, I've come across Paul Everson, who is local to me, so if his work is top notch, I'll use him. Cheers, Rob
  6. That's a JBL E140, rated at 400w, will he really blow it with a Dual Showman? I like the sound of the old D140F in my Bassman cab, but I will never run it very loud, and it is VERY heavy. If the intention is to gig this behemoth, then Bill's advice to put another Deltalite in and port the cab accordingly is the best in my opinion. At least it will make the cab "slightly" more portable. I would also get some new grill cloth, it's fairly cheap, and it's easy to install and it would smarten things up considerably. I like your cab. Rob
  7. We arrived at our gig in Ulverston last night to discover that we hadn't brought microphones, mic leads or mic stands! We borrowed one off the pub, another from an audience member who lived around the corner, and another off a mate of mine who was playing in a different pub 10 minutes walk away (a Shure Beta 58 too). Tiny pub, cramped performance space, absolutely rammed with people, couldn't move for bodies. Great gig in the end, but I wished I'd taken a bigger bass cab despite the tiny space we were playing in. Rob.
  8. The morning after the night before gig - I should have taken the Three10 !!
  9. It's usually a mystery as to where they've been before, sometimes we get a bit of an anecdote, or info on the immediate previous owner. Full history is usually not available. With my '73 Jazz, which is very heavily worn, I bought it from BassBros, but Nick (@oldhorsemurphy RIP) contacted me as he'd only just sold it to them. He told me how long he'd had it, and where he bought it. He'd bought it from the original owner, who was responsible for ALL the wear on that bass. He must have played it every day since 1973!
  10. The '64 Jazz has some serious mojo! Love that one. The price isn't ridiculous when compared to other dealers either.
  11. Yes I agree, the footprint is relatively small. However, when our drummer sees the Three10 with a vintage 400RB on top, his eyes light up and he sees it as an opportunity to hit a bit harder. So I take a rig commensurate with the size of the room, and it keeps the drummer at a reasonable level. It's odd, I know, but you haven't met our drummer (he's a great drummer btw). The first time I took a One10 instead, it was amazing how much quieter he played.
  12. Lovely bit of kit. I have a NAD 533, which is a rebadged Rega Planar 2. Rob
  13. I can't comment on whether it handles a 5 as I' don't use one. But I can't see any scenario where this cab wouldn't work. It's a cab I expect to keep forever (famous last words). However, there have been small gigs where it has not been the most appropriate cab for the job, and I've used my One10 for those so far. Occasionally I have felt the One10 to be not quite enough, so I've ordered another one. Hopefully by Christmas I'll have all the options covered, 1x10, 2x10, and 3x10 depending on the gig. I love the sound of Barefaced 10" cabs. Rob
  14. I looked at their website only yesterday, and it still said shipping October. It does make me wonder what's going on. Production problems? Perhaps the fanfare and launch was a little premature? Rob
  15. I have cab carnage in the conservatory and Mrs Rocks would like a resolution. Reduced to £160 for quick sale. Rob
  16. Yes. I recently had an issue with a Barefaced cover which was too big, but Barefaced resolved it very quickly, and the replacement cover was shipped to me directly from Hotcovers. Rob
  17. I recently bought an amp I wanted, and I wasn't able to buy the amp without this cab. So here it is. Gallien-Krueger MBE 212/4. 600w, 4 ohms, nice and light at around 15kg. Has the same drivers as the NEO range. Sounds great. Collection preferred from Morecambe, but will meet at a reasonable distance if you want it. Rob
  18. I totally agree, but not because of anything you might have written which you may consider to be drivel, but simply that I too appear to be a "Grand Master", which completely baffles me! I come here often for sage advice and information from people who have much more knowledge and experience than I do.
  19. I'm going to try to hang onto this cab and see if I can use it occasionally. It would also be interesting to take into the studio next year when we're planning to do some recording. Please have a look at the speaker frame. This speaker mounts into the cab from the front, so I would have thought it would have had some kind of gasket around the rear edge of the frame. There's certainly remnants of all kinds of gunk around the rear edge now. I was wondering if it would benefit from a gentle cleaning up and applying a new gasket before refitting into the cab? Please share any thoughts you may have, and also if you know a source for a suitable gasket. I'm also thinking about casters. It appears to have had some before, but they would need to be really heavy duty, and perhaps secured with T-nuts inside rather than just woodscrews. Rob
  20. Well, I've pulled it to check. D140F with the orange frame. Reconed, but with paper dust cap. I've fired it up tonight, and it's got a proper old school vibe going on with a P bass with flats. My wife is not convinced however. Rob
  21. I blame Martin (@The fasting showman) for this. He sent me a message yesterday about an old Fender Bassman cab which was for sale on Facebook about an hours drive from me. I didn't know I wanted one of these cabs, and to be honest, I'm still not sure! But it was so cheap that it didn't make any sense not to go and buy it. So here it is. I am still in shock as to how big, heavy and awkward it is, the pics on Facebook didn't give a clue to scale, and I certainly needed help getting it in the back of my car from the house. Now it's home, I'm trying to figure out how to convince my wife that it's a good idea to keep it, when I don't have anywhere really to actually keep it! The speaker is a reconed JBL D140F apparently, but I'll check that out in due course. Anyway, feel free to roast my stupidity at today's purchase. Though it does look quite nice with my Bassman 50 on it I must say. Rob
  22. I do like the Rumbles. I did a gig last weekend at Lancaster Music Festival, where the band before us had offered use of their PA, lights backline and engineer, because set up times were tight, and there was no time to break theirs down and set ours up. Yes please we said. I did try to find out what I'd be playing through, but I didn't find out in advance. Then on the day their bass player walked in with a Rumble 100. Hmm, I thought, this might not cut it. Sound check allayed all my fears, and the amp was just great all night. In fact a perfect foil to my P bass with flats. Rob
  23. Done! Thanks for the heads up Martin!
  24. Ok, you can have first dibs. I'll sort it out first and make sure it's tip top. It is surprisingly light for a 2x12. I think they use the same drivers as the NEO range. It's a one hand lift....carefully.
