The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
AlexDelores replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Very nice! I’m considering whether to sell my Vintera Mustang to fund one of these in sunburst as I really like the inlays on the neck. My Junior Jet has quickly become my number 1 bass as it’s so comfortable to play! -

That old problem of missing notes when playing

Geddy Lee talks about concentration in his book and how sometimes he had to change things in order to make them harder and force himself to focus… He talks about how he’d playing bass, using his feet for keyboard triggers, and singing. But, as he knew the material so well, his brain couldn’t help but think about going on a journey somewhere else. -
Thanks for the replies. Definitely useful information for me moving forward. I think as I work on my own development of my theory side, I’ll make a point of using a lot of different courses/tutors to give me a wide range of teaching methods etc.

Question for those of you that teach… What qualifications/training/knowledge do you feel is required to teach bass? Now, I know that’s a very broad question and I appreciate there isn’t a one size fits all answer. But, I’m curious as to what sort of qualifications/certificates you feel are required to teach as a tutor. I’m not talking within a school environment. I’m a good player and I play bass full time as part of a wedding/function duo that I also co-run. But, I’m thinking ahead to the future, I’m 33 with 2 young kids and although I love my “job” and don’t want/intend to slow down any time soon… there is likely to come a point in the next 10-15 years time when getting home at 2/3am and performing/DJing to a bunch of drunk people between 60-100 times a year is going to get a bit much. I’m fully aware I need to begin to strengthen my understanding of music theory/different techniques, as well as reading. But, is it generally expected to have a degree/any other qualification to teach bass as a tutor? Apologies for the essay. Thanks in advance Alex

Lovely that is! I remember trying one when they came out and was blown away by how much bass you got for the price.

As previously mentioned, I think the Nux Mighty Plug is bob on! This is all of the footprint it takes up for me and allows me to play when the kids are in bed. It has a few different amps and effects within the free app. And, it just runs in the background so you can play along with Spotify/Apple/Youtube etc. Obviously, some of the things like the Phil Jones and other heads will likely have a better tone/sound but for practicing through headphones/the price, I don’t think you can knock this. You can also put it at the end of a pedalboard and use your effects, just adjust the gain with the app to suit.

Retrovibe do some really nice looking Rick-esq short scale copies at decent prices. I’ve no experience of the brand but I’ve only read good things on here. -
Sorry to hear! Yep! As a full time lead singer/bass player. I can’t tell you how much of my energy is used/wasted worrying about getting ill/trying to stay healthy. Inevitably though, when the lurge strikes hard, there’s not much that can be done. Having a decent dep network/ backup network is about as much as we can do and then making sure the couple (as we primarily perform at weddings) aren’t let down. Funnily enough, yesterday’s gig was one that I crawled through with the beginnings of a cold. All day package so 5 sets in total throughout the day. Fortunately, we’ve now got 3 weeks off so I can be suitably ill for a change which makes a change from the busy summer weeks… There’s actually a really good chapter in Geddy Lee’s newest book which talks about the pressure/worries of being the one relying on a larynx, which I found relatable.. Anyway, my gig went well and I got through it fairly unscathed thanks to a side of stage portable steamer 😂

Thanks guys. Decided to send it back after another try. It’s 1040cm internal and the mono is 1060cm (from internet specs). I think this just feels a bit too tight to get away with. G4M do a double with 15mm foam which would be long enough but I think I’m gonna hang fire and buy something a bit better. I don’t really ‘need’ a double case tbh. But, with another premier inn stay coming up after Saturdays gig, I’m remembering how annoying it’s been the last few times trying to get my long scale hard cases into the room 2 stories up at 2am 😂 -

I’ve picked up a double electric guitar soft case for a decent price. It’s to fit my Gretsch Junior Jet and Mustang basses. But, as it’s a guitar case it’s a couple of cms too small really… The basses fit and the case zips up. But, the end of the mustang headstock is pushing quite a lot into the material. With it being a soft case. Anyone think this will affect anything too much? My worry is that it’s putting too much pressure on the neck, but with it being a soft case, I’m wondering if I’m overthinking it as surely cases stretch a bit over time anyway? Any thoughts are appreciated. Curious if anyone with short scale basses has gone down this road with guitar cases and has had any problems (or not!) Thanks Alex -

https://youtu.be/VZU1hoTYipY?si=OhA7bIgT4nHmMC7t Might be of interest to some. Very cool look at Mike’s beat up old Gibson. To me, it seems the Grabber/Ripper has become super popular in the last 12 months or so… I feel like it’s something I’ve barely seen for half of my playing life and then the last 12 months I see them everywhere. But, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been as popular for ages, just from my small window into the bass world it feels like it’s having its moment in the sun.

Stunning that! How much does it weigh?

I’ve also used them on my Vintera 60s Mustang in the past. They fit fine 👍 -
Open mic - and specifically singing..
AlexDelores replied to EssexBuccaneer's topic in General Discussion
The voice is an instrument and like any instrument, singing lessons can be effective in the same way as a tutor of any instrument can improve your performance. Essentially a decent vocal coach will show you how to breath correctly, sing from the correct place and hold your body correctly. And, importantly, they’ll help you find your voice/range. I grew up playing in alt/punk bands so kinda learnt to shout/sing but always had naturally a pretty strong, solid voice. In 2019 when my acoustic duo was transitioning from a weekend gig to becoming our full time jobs I ended up getting ill and then getting a bad case of laryngitis. I decided to get some singing lessons to rebuild my confidence and try and learn to sing in a way that not only improved my voice but protected it. I had about 6 lessons and then Covid struck so I stopped. But, the info I got from those 6 lessons has changed the game completely for me since then. I would add that it’s important to find a good and knowledgable singing teacher. I tried a few who basically had me singing karaoke in their spare room and had no knowledge of how the vocal cords words or the science behind singing. Also, as mentioned above, it’s important to find your range. Sure, with practice and training you can expand your range. But, there very few (even professional) vocalists that can sing absolutely anything in any key. Maybe get out and play a few gigs and see where your confidence/comfort level is with singing and then look at what you want to address with a coach. -
Appreciate the info! We’re only a duo so will only ever need 2 monitor mixes. They look really good. I was actually recommended it by the guy that helped us out buying our IEM’s and he had only good things to say too so it’s nice to have an additional opinion! We currently use the Jmix8’s built in mixer which sounds fantastic but only has 1 aux out. And, that also has issues sometimes with the remote mixer connection but unlike the Behringer, there’s no way to boost the signal. Thanks again! Alex

Interesting read this! It’s funny how much a rushed set up can affect the gig. We’ll perform all day at weddings. Finish the drinks reception and then sit around for 4 hours waiting to get access to the evening area, only to be told we’ve got 45 mins to set up the complete set up including DJ rig! We’re looking at buying an Xair 12 this week in order to give us separate monitor mixes… I’ve been advised that I’ll need a seperate router. Without hijacking the thread, other than the issue last night that you mentioned, do you find the Xair to be relatively reliable? Alex

Good to hear! I’d really like to get my hands on a JMJ to have a play. I’ve heard they’re knock spots off every other Mustang. But, I’m curious, does anyone know if the feels chunkier than the Vintera neck? The only thing I’m struggling with mine is that I think I just prefer a slimmer neck. I can get round the Mustang neck. But, then I pick up my Jazz and it’s so much more comfortable! I also think I’d like to chuck a humbucker on it. But, I’ve heard the pickups are loads better on the JMJ.

8 months since the last photo in here of a Mustang in the Wild so I’ll attempt to get this one going again with my 60s Vintera. And, In homage to the last post, there’s also one of me looking slightly bewildered with my Mustang out in the Wild. I think that bright white pickguard has got to go!

I like that a lot!

New Gretsch SS’s arriving in December. I think this looks absolutely stunning and if it plays anything like my Jet Junior it’ll be a winner! I’m trying to decide what bass to move on in order to get one as I cannot justify another bass in the house. https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/240610425239008--gretsch-streamliner-jet-club-bass-havana-burst?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD76p-21Y2lfZoDDl8TxLK9Yy07sz&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiLariKOSiAMV-ZyDBx0iODYvEAQYDyABEgKMYPD_BwE
