1. I recently sold my S2 but there are many practical benefits to the headless design. Tuners won't get knocked, even in transit. Your will find the bass hardly strays out of tune. Lack of a headstock is supposed to help get an even response from the neck. That said, these days I prefer the look of a headed Status and the choice of strings will be bigger without resorting to other means of locking the string.
2. As a rule I love the 12 band SMX, it's one of my all-time favourite amps with everything I need in a bass amp and the sound to boot. These days I would stay away from the preshape which scoops too many mids and leaves too much bass and clack. This never bothered me in the 80s! I swapped out the valve for another and with the right EQ and compression the amp did a reasonable job in Ampeg territory. It needn't always sound like 'typical' Trace.
3. Yes, I'm about to take my first step with GK. Don't worry though - if GK is not my sound I'll put it back up :-)
4. Bob is a great guy to deal with. No problems. All the best Mark
5. Thanks Wally. Pleasure to do a deal. Cheers.
6. BIt late on this one but Gavin was a pleasure to deal with. Cheers!
7. As mentioned the pre-shape on TEs gives you an instant seagull-shaped EQ with plenty of mids scooped out. These days I would rather just use the graphic and be a little less aggressive on the scoop. To my ears the pre-shape takes you to straight to that 80s slap and pop funk tone - almost like putting a Precision down and picking up a Stingray. I think Trace's are terrific amps with great punchy character and that comes through even with the pre-shape off where a warmer sound with more mids intact can be found. That graphic is pretty useful and at a glance you can see right what you're doing.
8. Ashdown are ok but I wouldn't recommend the Little Giant which seemed to have some reliability issues. The new MiBass should be a better option.
9. Up for sale is a Mesa Walkabout Scout combo in really good condition with no issues. I bought this not so long ago from Basschatter overwater#1 (Matt) not so long ago in my quest to own or try most of the good things out there. I used it on a live podcast recorded just with a couple of overheads and we were all knocked out by the depth of tone on the recording. You all know the score on Scout combos - 12" speaker plus a passive radiator on the underside. Full sound which has been said to be the closest to an all-tube tone without the weight. This is the 4 ohm version so it gets the full 300w amp power. However, many people have happily used a Walkabout at 2 ohms or 2.6 ohms (many posts on TB about this capability) so an extension cab looks possible. Or you can just take the amp out and use a bigger cab if you prefer. Comes with protective Mesa cover and manual. Trades maybe considered if you have a good condition Trace SMX head or Ashdown JJ500 head. I do like graphic EQ... Price is £795 delivered mainland UK or £775 collected from Doncaster. The original thread from where I bought it is here and it includes Matt's pics (still looks the same): PICS: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1372248 Now sold! Thanks to all.
10. Now sold - thanks for the interest. Still got a MESA Walkabout Scout available for £795 delivered if anyone's interested - bought on here not so long ago - here is the original 'for sale' thread with pics: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1372248
11. Don't worry about it. Chances are you will have no trouble at all for a very long time as preamp tubes aren't that delicate. Carry a spare of each tube for insurance.
12. Pics. I love this cab. It smells funky inside too.
13. Recently bought this from basschatter Sjonnie who was a pleasure to deal with. I bought a Trace at the same time with a view to only keeping one of them and the Trace is where my roots are so it won. Naviagtor sounds wonderful, very clear and you can further tweak this with the semi-parametrics, DBX-type compressor and tube control. Loads of connections round the back. This one was built in the mid-90s in Montrose, USA. Excellent condition with only very minor marks from racking. Comes with pedal that shows signs of use. Asking [s]£400[/s] £390 delivered to your door. No trades as I'm in a 'nearly everything must go' frame of mind. Unless you have a Ken Smith Black Tiger 5...
14. A Precision bass is one of the most flexible basses to deal with this kind of problem. Unlike most basses you can get at any individual string with pickup adjustments. I have also drifted to not being satisfied with D & G strings generally - so I tend to look for a set of strings that are weighed heavier on the higher side.
15. These are the later series Trace heads I believe. Does the faceplate have a backlight and lights up green?
16. I briefly owned a RH450 which is essentially the same apart from less power and lack of tweeter tone. It's definiately a great featured head (the best perhaps) and I do fancy having another look myself at the 750 BUT as with a lot of class d stuff I found something about the sound that I didn't particular take to. I found the RH450 a little 'grainy' for my tastes. I like the softer side of tube amplification and came to the conclusion that this is not what this head does best.
17. Exceptional safe packaging. Item arrived as described. Many thanks.
18. Great transaction. Amp arrived safely. Thanks.
19. Looks like standard spacing to me at 19mm. The 16.5mm is a custom option I believe.
20. That's a beauty. If I had the cash right now I'd be deep in thought.
21. I'll register a fleeting interest at this point although I'd need to raise some cash. I like my Steinberger and the Streamliner is on my list of basses to try although a Ken Smith is probably above it.
22. Yes, seems that he regularly used both Arias in the early days. Have to agree that it's good that Tony has a signature bass. Back in 83 The Crossing had just come out and Tony did some fine bass lines which were inventive but not too difficult to work out and play. I remember teaching a friend how to play bass (he's still playing) and the 1st track I showed him was 'Chance' which he managed to get close to week by week! Think I'll dig out The Storm on youtube. A VERY early big Country with an early Trace. Thinking back, I loved this band.
23.
... are you sure it's not an Aria TSB series?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONsUPtkQlYU
