I used to take just my bass down to jam nights & plug straight into the desk. No DI. Oh, that is a very nice rig.

I tried that app, it's crap.

I never use paper at a gig. I prefer to learn the song before playing it in front of people. I do plan on using the iPad at gigs, but using iMPC for playing loops & samples or playing a synth app.

I think 51mon would be the chap to ask as he seems to know a lot about them. I'm sure he made a thread about compressors. IIRC, he suggests avoiding compressors that don't have a meter. He did recommend the Markbass Compressore as one of the stomp boxes he rates.

Dr Dave has just said what I was gonna post. Don't start with your flashiest song for your first gig. Choose something that you can all play easily & sound good. The first gigging song is your most nerve wracking one & once you get the initial "ooh, an audience are watching me" stage out the way, you can then break out your fave basslines. My singer always said that the first song is usually a throw away number that no one will remember, but it needs to get the audience's attention. Chuck the slow songs in the middle & maybe one near the end & finish with 2 really good songs that get everyone dancing & wanting more. All the best with it & remember.... Have FUN!

I use the full site on my phone & iPad, but haven't tried the mobile one since the first version (which wasn't very good). Gonna give it a try next time I'm mobile BCing.

Surprised to hear that the MB never had the volume for you as I found the MB quite a bit louder than every other 2x10 combo I tried (& I like quite a bass heavy sound). My 2p for Tony, take all the recommendations on here & try them all out. Find what suits you the best.

Can't comment on the Ampegs (though I've heard that whilst their valve amps are great, the SS are not so great. But don't take that as gospel) but if you like your GK sound, why not get a smaller GK rig or combo?

@ 5 years ago, I spent quite a good few months trying loads of rigs. Ended up with the MarkBass CMD-102P & I'm still very happy with it.

Test it without the looper before assuming it's defo the looper. Most likely it is, but there's also the PSU.

Have you tried this without the loop?

The Roland ME50b is about as simple as it gets. If you know which effects you want, then I'd go for separate stompboxes.

Last time I used a chainsaw it was painful. Not so much for me, more so for the ex guitarist.

Worth asking for a chord chart, but if he hasn't got one (which may be most likely), then learn 2-3 songs. Sit & listen to a couple that you think you can create a good bassline to that will show your skills (use a mix of simple & complex to suit the song). I listened to a few tracks & worked out the chords when I joined a singer/songwriter & he liked the basslines that I came up with, so it should be a doddle for you.

If you're wanting an Ibby, have a play on an SR (now the prestige range).

I started on keys & did a couple of solo gigs in the late 80s playing instrumental stuff like Tangerine Dream & JM Jarre. Then decided to join a band in the early 90s & played rock covers (GnR, The Cult, Led Zep, etc). Then went on to do some thrash (Napalm Death, Megadeth, Metallica). Then in the late 90s, got into computer music & spent a lot of time writing chillout/trance (& even some happy hardcore). Joined an originals rock band in the mid 00s that ended up doing all sorts of stuff, from rock, punk & blues right through to reggae & jazz. Me & the singer from that band then made another band to do songs that wouldn't fit in that band. A mix of folk, americana, jazz, blues & experimental. Spent a few years playing in the church band. Now trying to form an acid jazz/breakbeat band (maybe with some dubstep thrown in there for good measure).
