My church don’t have any rehearsals other than for about 15 mins prior to worship. The majority of folk just wing it (which as almost all worship songs sound the same, it’s easy to do). The Sunday set usually gets sent out the Wednesday or Thursday just before, though it’s been as late as Saturday morning. They’re really unorganised & there’s no reason for it.

Our church has a Team Night on the last Thursday of the month. It’s a get together for all the worship team & they introduce a new song at it. So the musicians & singers have to learn this song for the Thursday, which would be no big deal, but as per usual, the song isn’t announced until Monday evening & then they let you know the key & upload the chord chart on the Tuesday (today). So most of the folk have no time to listen to it, let alone learn it. I really don’t get why this is left so late? It’s not like it relies on anything. Why can’t they pick a song at the start of the month?

It uses up all the free memory for “system processes”. I had 350gb free & it used the lot, so when I tried to do anything, it flagged up “out of memory” messages. I believe the issue’s since been resolved. when I was a teen, I was heavily into synths & always wanted my own Juno 106. I should have bought one when the could be picked up for £300. I’d still like one, but the Juno/Jupiter X would fill that gap. I nearly bought a Juno 60 back in 1989 for £250, but I was £50 short.

I think this is what I need to do. Get my butt through to GG in Glasgow & have a play with a few. I’ve looked at the System 8, but it’s basically the predecessor to the Juno X & Jupiter X. The Jupiter X has 6 synth models in it (Jupiter X, Jupiter 8, Juno 106, JX8P, SH101, RD piano) as well as a vocoder & a bunch of classic drum machines. You can add more from Roland Cloud. The Roland synths I’m looking at are not analogue, but from listening to demos on YouTube, they do a very convincing job.

Whatever I get is going to be for live & home. I love the Roli & will probably regret selling it, but last time I took it, my 7 year old MacBook decided to play up (a known issue with Montary). I had considered getting a Modal Cobalt8 & using the Roli with that (Modal synths are MPE), but then the Juno X popped up & I’ve decided to flog the Roli & my NI S61 mk2 to help fund a new synth.

The Roland Juno X popped up in my YouTube feed, so me & the Mrs watched a vid. We then watched about 6 more Juno X vids & the Mrs was impressed & said “if you want one, get one”. I joined a 4 piece band recently, me on bass/synth (that being a laptop & Roli Rise), drummer (has acoustic & e kit), guitarist & a keys/clarinet player. Soundwise, we’re a kind of ambient funk jazz lofi chillout sound (think Zero7, Khruangbin, R+R=Now, etc). So a hardware synth would be ideal. I’d also be using it for producing music at home as well as just playing it at home for fun. After watching a few more vids, I stumbled upon the Jupiter X & was blown away. Basically the Juno X’s big brother. But then I’ve saw the Arturia Polybrute, which is analogue & is rather impressive too. So now I’m stuck. I like that the Roland synths have scenes & can layer 5 parts (1 of which can be a drum track) & you can add various Roland synth models, but I also like the hands on approach to the Polybrute, with it’s Morphee pad & ribbon controller (I’m also a sucker for that wood). I haven’t really looked at any other synths around the £2k mark, but these 3 all get great reviews. So, any players out there got any advice or Pros/Cons on these synths?

I've got mine done. All the parts are monophonic (that was my own challenge). The majority of parts are played on keys (not programmed in) & the big dirty bass that plays the melody was my bass popped through isotopes Trash 2. All aboard the train to here.....

Well I’ve made a start, got the intro & some great sounds, but not sure where I’m going with it yet.

You could always send him ghost note.

I'm in. Band jam on Wednesday & decided to try something to fit the pic. Drummer on drums, Guitarist on guitar, Pianist on clarinet & me on the Roli (intro sound) & bass. It was fun. I give you Hippo toe to toe at the hippodrome - Toe Toe Just updated, so it may not show until later. In the meantime, here's the link... https://soundcloud.com/feintmotions/hippo-toe-to-toe-at-the-hippodrome-toe-toe

Hillsong & Bethel played a big part in me leaving. The songs are dire & after seeing many of their shenanigans, I don’t want to associate myself with them.

& next month you can play some Led Zep to the congregation? 😂

I got V Station installed & working without issue, but B Station & their FX suite just disappear when I install them.

I never knew A$$ was a swear word. Ar$e is though.

Ibanez SR500... different sound - new pickup or preamp?
xgsjx replied to ReeV0's topic in General Discussion
From a previous thread, taking the player out of the equation, the majority of tone comes from the pickups, then your electrics, then strings. They can all make a huge difference. -
A couple of years ago, I had a similar issue. Had an issue where my Roli wasn’t connecting. Realised I was using a skinny cable that came free with something, so swapped it for the cable that came with the Roli & the issue was gone. I recently bought a 10ft cable off the Amazon & it works without issue, as does any decent thick USB cable.

That’s what I use. For church, it was Korg Tuner, PSK Distortion, Boss Chorus & Behringer BDi21. There was a point where I had a Soundblox SA143 filter, which ended up being used more as an EQ, but I sold that.

That’s what most churches need. Someone to put the band, singers & musicians in check. Our church doesn’t have anyone like that & it’s not my place to do it.
-
My church must have the same list. Roll call is for 8:45 on a Sunday, most would turn up the back of 9, some after 9:30. considering you’ve to clear the stage for 9:45, that leaves little time to soundcheck & rehearse. One of the many reasons that finally made me leave.

One of the (many) problems with church bands. Singists are not usually open to advice unless they’ve already had lessons & are a decent singer.
-
Did you just call him Chunky?

My practice process when I was playing in church would be to find a version of the songs in the Singist’s chosen key, preferably a minimalist version & play along with it, have a quick listen to the original to check for any identifiable bass hooks & that was it. In the end, I was spending very little time on practicing the songs as they were getting sent out on the Thursday before worship & more & more songs are just sounding the same, but with different words. RHCPs new album has more variation than CCW does! 🤣

Easy. I quit the worship band & joined a jazz band. 😎
