Duff notes - bad technique? - can't be the gear
thepurpleblob replied to Rubbishatbass's topic in Theory and Technique
Get lessons, stop playing bl**dy slap!! Slap bass is actually properly difficult technique wise and nearly completely useless - even teenage girls aren't impressed. Concentrate on basic fingerstile and/or plectrum playing. That's enough trouble for the first few years -
The stuff I play rarely gets up the dusty end but I've been trying some (slightly) more adventurous stuff recently. However I am finding this very difficuly. I'm getting lots of pain and cramp in my fretting hand - mostly at the base of my thumb. It feels very awkward and cramped to play for any amount of time up here. I assume the answer is "practice, practice" but any tips appreciated.

For trade or sale is my Ashdown rig consisting of an ABM-410T plus ABM-210T. Both units have seen many gigs but I'm quite fussy and both work perfectly and are in very good condition. I have a cover for the 410 but not the 210. They are capable of some serious volume with the right head. I will trade for almost anything that takes up less space, for example..

A small cab/combo suitable for 'intimate' gigs of similar value
A bass guitar of similar value 4 or 5 string, fretted or fretless.
Any computer equipment considered
Won't slit - all or nothing gents ! I will also sell for cold hard cash - now £250 firm. That's it. Getting donated to the local school if nobody interested These are pretty heavy so postage is not my preferred option. I am just south of Glasgow, so I can meet half way, deliver, or whatever anywhere between North East/West England and up to Aberdeen/Inverness for a contribution to the diesel. I did get a rough price to deliver at is was working out in excess of 50 quid.
The drummer in my band is, from tomorrow, on tour with the proclaimers for 6 weeks so I'm having to go through the same pain as you at the moment.
.....drummer no mooore..... ahem

Having a similarly bad week. Our drummer dropped out on us a few days before an important gig (he'd had a minor stroke, well, can't complain really). So, we got a replacement. Spent 6 hours practising the set then he phoned up the next day to say he wasn't happy and didn't want to do it. Eventually got a fabulous drummer to stand in with less than 12 hours notice who played the whole set with more-or-less zero rehearsal. Impressive, but plays in about ten other bands. Good drummers are hard to find. In general musicians who can more-or-less play AND don't have serious personality defects AND have gear and a car that both work AND don't have a drinking problem AND have some sense of responsibility seems really just too much to ask for!!

I aspire to learning the lines exactly. However, due to lack of skill, time and motivation it doesn't always come out like that. I tend to get them close enough and then revisit at my leisure to gradually refine. On occasion I fiddle with the parts a bit for reasons such as, there wasn't a bass, I couldn't hear it properly, it doesn't work very well with our line up etc.. If in doubt I often listen to other cover bands crack at songs on YouTube to steal ideas, having no imagination myself!

It's all rather like buying cars as an investment. It's sick. You buy a car to drive it and you buy a bass to play it. We can debate all day whether a 50 year old Fender is great or is just nasty and covered in fag burns or, at best, no better than a brand new one for a quarter of the cost (or more).

Before I read to the end I was just going to say "pop down to the local Crack Converters and pick your stuff up" It's a joke but it's now... how is that store still operating when they appear to do nothing but buy stolen goods. At least you know where to go when your stuff gets nicked I suppose...

It must be just me then.... I have one on my Stingray and always found it a bit rubbish. It's fiddly to tune in the first place and even more fiddly to keep in tune. On a sweaty night when you need to retune reasonably often the 'D' goes out as well as the E (that is relatively, tuning the E doesn't bring it back quite right). Step on your floor tuner and twist the E tuner until it says D. Save yourself 45 quid (or more)...

Smallest giggable bass combo/cab?
thepurpleblob replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
You should have a chat with Alex over at Barefaced. Obviously he'll be keen to sell you one of his cabs but he seems like a very straight-up guy and knows what he is talking about. He'll give you good advice! This sort of stuff tends to me a serious financial investment, so it's probably a good idea to get it right. BTW... as far as I know, most of these switched-mode/digital heads are all the same thing inside. They use off the shelf B+O amp modules. They all weigh nothing. I don't think there's a lot to choose. -
bassist stereotype - which one are you?

Smallest giggable bass combo/cab?
thepurpleblob replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I've got a Barefaced Super Twelve and a Genz Benz 6.0. The cab, while not tiny, fits easily in the boot of all the weird cars I own and can be carried easily in one hand. The GenzBenz is tiny and weightless. With that in a shoulderbag I can carry my whole rig (bass as well) in one go comfortable (as long as someone opens the door for me!) The sound is just incredible. It's very hi-fi so may not be to everyone's tastes. Although, I never thought I liked hi-fi sounding rigs until I heard this. The downside is that you can now hear every note and every mistake it cuts through so much. I think it's the cab that makes the difference. The GenzBenz head is rubbish with my other Ashdown cabs. -
All sounds fair - thanks for the input !!

We're not desperate money wise - we've never really done it for the money. But I'll look like an even bigger idiot if I pitch it completely wrong. I don't know what the requirements are so will need to play that by ear too. I know where I am going into a pub to ask about weekend gigs but this is right out of my comfort zone.
-
What with one thing and another I haven't played a new year gig in years. I think last one I did was in a pub and we charged 800 quid plus some tickets. This year we've been asked about doing a gig in a reasonably decent hotel (£70 a punt for the tickets). I'm going to see the boss over the weekend and am a bit twitchy about it. We really want a table and some cash to shut the WAGs up but I'm not sure what the going rate is these days. Any thoughts..... I might just get told, take it or leave it, of course!

If you don't make mistakes then you're not learning anything.

I couldn't believe it was the same band at first. You got to make a living I suppose.

Ridiculous haircuts.... kids today etc etc

Another has anybody got..... Back In The USSR

I've got a performable version but it's mostly at the root-note level. Watched Macca play it live on YouTube and that seems to be how he plays it too. Was mostly just for interest as there seems to be some fiddly playing in there but the bass isn't terribly clear. -
Bass transcription of the above? At a quick listen sounds non-trivial and would save some time and stress Cheers

Unfortunately - this is the way of things on (some) internet forums. They are run by people who will never get any power or responsibility in the "real" world! You want to try working in the non-windows end of IT. I've been kicked of mailing lists for quoting prior messages at the beginning, not the end, or whichever. Anyway, my point, there's more to life than worrying about this cr*p

I've spent 10 years trying to get a practice routine and have (mostly) failed miserably. I am about 90% event driven - learning new songs that I need to. Only when there's none of that do I get back to reading practice and usually a bit of all round the neck type of scale practice which is always useful.

Songs you wish you played live but have never done

Looking down this list, I get one point... used to play "Moonage Daydream". Nobody knew what the hell it was though. It's probably my age but I've always had a hankering for playing 70s prog stuff as they generally have very musical basslines. There's not a lot of demand though
