jazz bass pick ups - WTF..........?
redstriper replied to redstriper's topic in Repairs and Technical
So is this a flaw with my basses, which could be fixed with some electrical tinkering? Or is it a feature of all jazz bass pups ? My basses are a 1963 Fender jazz and a modern Tanglewood Corvette copy, both with original wiring . -
A Couple of Soundclips - Which sounds the nicest?
redstriper replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd like to hear the same comparison with the neck pups on full, no bridge pup and the tone rolled right off, playing finger style over the 15th fret and with the MM on full bass boost with no mid or treble. I understand if you don't want to do that coz it's not your style, but no one ever demos basses with a reggae tone (probably coz no one is interested except me) . Oh - and would it be too much trouble to change all the strings for well used flatwounds ? -
I've always had a soft spot for the Ashbory basses - they're supposed to sound cracking too despite being so small. Another one to add to the list?
I've gigged with one many times, it weighs next to nothing and sounds great for what I do. All the tracks here were recorded with one.

Hi Pete, Gad to know I'm not the only UK Flite fan - do you use just one on it's own? I'm thinking of ordering another without the driver to save shipping weight and fitting an Eminence 3015LF, which is the same driver I already have in mine. Steve.

jazz bass pick ups - WTF..........?
I think you've discovered that as the source impedance of your bass increases (via the volume pot), the turnover frequency of the low-pass filter formed by the (increasing) source impedance and the capacitance of the guitar cable reduces, reducing top-end... Please translate in layman's terms (science is not my strong point). A lot of guitars suffer from this too, and some guitars have a "bleed" capacitor fitted across the volume pot to prevent it from occurring.... In fact, it can be quite useful on a guitar - playing your chord stuff with the vol rolled off a bit for a softer sound - whack it up for lead parts, with a more agressive tone... ... I'm a bit surprised it is so noticable on a bass though - I have a Jazz, but it's an active, and I haven't tried it yet... I mostly use it with the vol pot right up (or knocked back only just a little) for this very reason...
Thanks for the explanation - I don't quite understand the science, but I'm glad to know I'm not imagining things! I have noticed that there is no such effect with the active piezo pup on my Ashbory and I wonder whether it will still be there with humbucking pups? It's a very noticeable phenomenon with the single coil jazz pups and I'm amazed I've only just discovered it after 30 years of always having the pup on full volume. It's especially useful in my style of music where deep fundamental bass is everything. I will always keep the volume low now and I recommend all reggae bassists give it a try. -
"Core Tone" isn't very important in your bass.
redstriper replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Here's what I look for in a bass, in order of preference - 1: playablity 2: comfort 3: tone 4: looks Number one is the most important by a long way, but the others are also nice if you can have them. -
I feel a bit daft posting this but.............. If you have a bass with a jazz pup near the neck, try this and report back - Solo the pick up on full volume with the tone rolled right off. Cut all top and middle eq on your amp. Set amp gain well below clipping and moderate output volume. Play something simple, finger style. Now do the same thing with the pup volume reduced to about half or 3/4. Increase amp gain to match the previous output volume. Leave all other settings the same. Play the same thing. Well ? Does it sound the same, or do you notice a difference in the tone? I have found a big difference and I've done it with different basses and different amps, there is a lot more deep fundamental and less harmonic overtone with the pup volume turned down. Is this normal and if so why have I only just found out?

I'd like one or two for jazz bass if still available. Thanks, Steve.
hmmm, I don't really do guitars, but have you got a couple of pics? - depending on cash adjustment, it may be of interest to my daughter
I've not had time to take pics yet, but you can see a stock pic in my thread here. Mine is in sky blue, very pretty and near perfect with an easy action and great sound. I'm also unsure about the bass - I need a fairly lightweight alternative to my old jazz bass, with a deep smooth tone for reggae.

As I understand it, Paypal only holds back payments from 'risky' sellers, so it can offer buyers a refund if they are not happy with the item, in accordance with distance selling rules. Such sellers can access their funds as soon as the buyer has received the item and indicated their satisfaction by leaving positive feedback. The payment will only be refunded after the item has been returned to the seller in original condition and to the seller's satisfaction. It means that the seller has to pay postage costs before receiving payment, but it gives both buyer and seller protection from fraud. Here's the explanation from paypal - We're committed to providing the fastest, safest payment service on the planet. To keep ourselves on track, we’ll occasionally hold back payments from certain sellers to ensure that their buyers are completely satisfied. We know this can be a frustrating experience and apologise for the inconvenience; however by doing this, we can keep our prices low by repelling fraudsters who aim to spoil the PayPal service. Payment Holds A payment hold is when we take a single payment that you’ve received and set it aside while we make sure that your customers are satisfied. The funds for payments received are held temporarily as a pending balance in your account, and released at the end of 21 days. The funds may be released early if PayPal determines that the transaction has been fulfilled and your customers are satisfied. PayPal holds payments to ensure that sellers have sufficient funds in their account if a customer files a dispute or chargeback. Holds may also be placed on your account if: You have a high rate of customer disputes or low eBay feedback You have been an eBay and PayPal member for less than 6 months, and have limited selling activity You have an eBay feedback score of less than 100 and do not have a record of good performance You’re selling on eBay and have a low Detailed Seller Rating (4.5 or below) You happen to be selling in a high risk category such as tickets, travel, gift vouchers, computers, electronics or mobile phones You have a sudden change in selling activities PayPal will also hold funds for transactions where the buyer has raised a dispute, claim or chargeback. Your funds will immediately be released when one of the following occurs: The buyer leaves you positive feedback (eBay items only) 21 days pass without a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal filed on the transaction Your buyer confirms delivery of the item via your postal tracking number We know it’s frustrating to not have full access to your money, but there are a few things you can do to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a 21 day payment hold: Post your items with trackable postage such as Royal Mail Recorded Delivery or Special Delivery Post your orders right away and communicate early and often with your buyer Leave feedback for your buyers and encourage them to do the same (eBay items only) Ensure the item is well packaged, secure and sent to the correct address A reserve is an amount of your overall monthly payments that we’ll set aside and release at a later date. Reserves are imposed upon a fraction of large sellers who haven’t built up a history of good performance yet or who may suddenly find themselves struggling financially. Every reserve is different, but if a reserve is applied to your account, you’ll always have the terms of that reserve clearly explained to you by PayPal.

Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Project - Advice Needed.
redstriper replied to absolutpepper's topic in Build Diaries
I have a nice red tort pick gaurd and I might also have some spare flatwound strings if you're interested. My personal favourite strings for fretless are TI jazz flats but I haven't got any spare of those. -
Warwick rockbass corvette good for reggae ?
redstriper replied to redstriper's topic in Bass Guitars
Dunno how much mine weight, but it's not heavy. Not featherweight, I'd say around 8 pounds and a bit. The Rockbass could be lighter, with agathis and alder bodies. One heavy SOB is my Warwick Corvette STD, bubinga body, wenge neck.
Thanks Sir. My old jazz bass is another heavy beast which is why I'm looking to replace it for gigs. I was thinking of a squier CV jazz, but open to anything suitable. Under 9 pounds is fine, think I'll look out for a Hohner - what is the neck profile like? I prefer a jazz neck and also like the corvette. Bubinga is mad heavy, the ash corvette is much lighter and still sounds good. Would you say the Hohner is better for reggae than the Warwick? My preference is for a very smooth deep front pup tone - check my band below to get the picture. -
If you can find a Hohner BBass, give it a bash, It's got dub-like lows with the preamp. Aston Barrett plays one. About the same price than a Rockbass.
The only thing that might put me off with the Hohner is the weight - they look heavy, while the Warwick Corvette is lightweight. -
I bought some 10" drivers from Chris and found him excellent to deal with - honest, reliable and highly recommended.
