I've been very pleased with the modern reissue of the HB-8! I've heard various criticisms of the original '60s ones, but I gather they've been addressed in the updated model. Sounds great, plays well - unfortunately it's the only 8-string I've ever come across, so I don't have any reference points to compare it to, but I like it. The only problem I'm having is finding new strings for the bugger!

(It's music and band-related, so I figured GD was the right board - mods please move if you beg to differ!) Has anybody else on here crowdfunded a record before? A single, an EP, even an album? My band have decided that, since we're skint, it's worth a try. Unfortunately, none of us have done this before, so it will be very much the blind leading the blind! And the only universally accepted piece of advice we've had so far is: it's going to be hard work. (Oh, and apparently the pope's catholic, who knew?) So if anybody's got any more specific advice on this kind of crazy venture, I'm all ears!
True... but I'd hazard a guess that at least 50% of basses bought are never used in anger and are just bought by people who want to dabble at being a rockstar.
I am conscious of this, and always told myself that if a bass was just gathering dust, I should probably sell it - as I did with my first two basses, a Squier Bronco and an Aria Pro II AVB. So I'm left with, in order of acquisition: Sort-of-self-build (Brandoni Kit) Precision copy (Brenda) Epiphone EB-3 (Christina) Self-built "eBay Frankenbass" (Aradia) Schecter Model T (Joanne) Hagstrom HB-8 8-string (Vriska) Gibson 2011 Thunderbird (Annie) Warwick RB Corvette fretless (Eva) In keeping with my (attempted) use-it-or-lose-it policy, all of them have been gigged except the fretless, and all of them have appeared on at least one Cherry White record so far except for the fretless and the 8-string. And given we'll be recording again in the new year, I expect I can crowbar those two onto a track somewhere along the way!

In the name of shameless self-promotion: BUMP. It's this Friday, ladies and gents. Would be great to see you if you're in the area. A convenient FB-event deelie can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/822565011109227/?ref=2&ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming -
Allowing someone to use your bass at a gig.
EliasMooseblaster replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
I think in your circumstances I'd have said yes - he was nice about it, the situation (hopefully) wasn't his fault, and there was some urgency. But at the same time I can understand your reluctance given you barely knew the feller, and it would depend on the bass you had with you. If somebody were in need on a night where I'm gigging my Epiphone then I wouldn't be too worried...on the other hand, I'm bringing my Gibson to this Friday's gig, and no bugger's getting their mitts on that, no matter how dire their circumstances! -
I know it's very unlikely that I'm the first person to spot this, but has anyone else noticed the uncanny similarity between Flea's famous opening riff to the Chilli Peppers' Around the World: http://youtu.be/wKe-oqJVgZI and the main guitar hook from Budgie's Breadfan: http://youtu.be/s3-l_T6AuNk It's not just me, is it?

Damn, so close! If you'd been able to make it over the week before, you could have caught Cherry White at 93 Feet East on the 17th October. (https://www.youtube....eature=youtu.be)

Kate Davis, avec double bass, excellent.
EliasMooseblaster replied to phsycoandy's topic in General Discussion
A sterling job given the generally objectionable nature of the original source material. Hadn't heard of Ms Davis before but she's got a very impressive voice and certainly seems to know her way around that upright! (A pity about those cavernous drums, mind...) -

Every child to learn an instrument?
If I'd been made to learn an instrument at school, I doubt I'd have enjoyed it very much.
I hate to split hairs, but the petition doesn't say anything about making it mandatory - the emphasis is on making sure every child has the opportunity, if they want it. -
Don't agree. I like music/playing music but it is not essential. More essential to education is focusing on life skills and topics such as finance, realistic career based topics etc,. that everyone needs to know and be better armed for in life after school. Music is very much extra curricular to me.
I'd agree insofar that music is not absolutely essential to survival, but I'd argue that it's still important. If it were an either/or question where children were forced to choose between essential life skills and music, I could understand the view that music could wait. But we're in the fortunate position that schools can provide both, at least to some extent, and it's important to give children the option of a creative outlet, because a lot of them will become frustrated and unhappy without it, especially if their families cannot/will not encourage them in that respect. -

Still can't quite decide which is my favourite album...I seem to oscillate on an almost weekly basis between Willy and the Poorboys and Green River.
48 sets ....that's commitment!
Yeah, but if you're aiming to change once a week, that's almost a year's supply! If I may veer off-topic slightly: as a Roto devotee to a former Roto endorsee, did you ever get to try the "piano bass" strings (that I've only recently blundered across)? As I normally go for nickel Swing Bass, they sound like the kind of thing I might go for, though as you rightly point out, at £15+ a pop it's potentially quite an expensive experiment!

This made for very interesting reading: http://pickroar.com/1003/the-tone-stack-explained-in-english-for-humans/ Now, I realise that FMV tone stacks are pretty rare on bass amps these days, and generally more the preserve of guitar amps, but it makes me think that they offer a lot more control than you might initially think...provided you have the time to think through what you're doing, of course! It's certainly led to my LB30 making much more sense to me (which, I believe, has an FMV stack, correct me if I'm wrong). That said, a lot of my Laneys have had a parametric mid control (frequency sweep + midrange gain) which has always seemed like a good compromise to me between flexibility and simplicity.

Well, it was Saturday, but it was Sunday morning by the time I got home so perhaps it still counts: Cherry White at the Stag & Hounds, in Bristol. In spite of everything that went wrong, it was alright in the end - a huge thank you to Mornats and Pinball for coming down to see us, it was great to meet you both! We spent almost as much time sitting around in a side street in Chiswick as we did in Bristol itself, as the hire car's engine decided to start playing up just after we'd collected everybody. Got to the venue two hours later than planned; not a problem as it turned out to be a very relaxed affair. So relaxed, in fact, that we discovered the "house kit" was barely a kit at all - they offered us a rack tom but no way of mounting it, so our drummist had to rely on a kick and floor tom beside his snare. And then halfway through the set, all the mics cut out. We have contingencies for loss of a microphone, or our guitarist breaking a string, or even for the drumkit falling over, but losing all three vocals at once was not something we'd planned for. Thankfully it wasn't a huge crowd that watched us standing around like lemons for three minutes while the sound guy frantically ran to find another mic for our lead singer. But in spite of all that? Not bad, not bad. At least the crowd seemed to like what we were doing!
