1. I was looking after children while Kerry had her last year's birthday spa treatment. Sounds like a dream gig and I would have driven over if I had been available. Nick
2.
Quick update, singer is up for the challenge and wants to bring in new guitarist, so off we go!
Hooray!
3. This is why it is so important to be able to play both "left handed" and "right handed". It spreads the wear across two hands and allows you to play for twice as long.
4.
... Most of all, I'm here for some friendly banter. I do hope I've turned up at the right place
I think you'll find you've landed right
5. It is pretty much the rule in journalism that your editor will appreciate flowing prose before the deadline over correct facts. I have NEVER read a mass media article on a subject I know without being shocked by inaccuracies. And I have to confess that, when working on the student newspaper, my copy probably wasn't that much better
6. Hmm. Maybe I should try longer hair and tighter clothes? That was the lesson to learn right?
7. I have a slightly tatty example of a budget Antoni double bass. I don't know if it is the Debut model but I guess it is. It is really a very good instrument indeed for the price. My biggest issue with it is that the fingerboard has almost no relief. With regard to the bridge, mine has been tweaked but that action is still high, especially on the G string. Presumably this compensates for the lack of relief in the fingerboard. The other thing I would say is that the depreciation on a £2000 double bass should be virtually nil and and so I couldn't really recommend one of these budget basses to somebody unless they really, really cannot afford to tie up capital in a better instrument.
8.
Gear 4 Music thats who I bought it from.
Ahhh. My double bass teacher said I could try one of their basses but that I should get the tail piece re-secured immediately because they all fail. This is a known problem, to some extent.
9. I have the single pick-up version of this. It is unbelievably good for the money.
10. It took me about 60 seconds with the help of my wife. I held the bass up with the F holes down. She pushed the spike firmly into the bass (it landed pretty gently) and it rolled down to the F hole, where she pulled it out. Unfortunately she then left in tears because she thought that every time I said "F hole" I was swearing and that I must be furious with her Still, we can laugh about it now. The bass is transformed now that I have a long enough spike.
11.
I assume that you're sure that the diameter of the old and new end pin are the same? otherwise you'll need a new block...
Yes. I guess it is pure fluke but they happen to be the same.
12. I am new to double bass and I have just received a very nice long spike from my gran for my birthday. This should bring my double bass up where I need it. However, the old spike won't come out of the bass. Before I shove it in and try to get it out of an F-hole, is there a better way. I don't want to fail and end up with the old spike rattling around in the bass. Will the old spike (tangs) fit through the F-hole? Or do I need to take the bass to a professional to get the swap. The new spike does not have tangs, by the way. When I come to swap back (I plan on keeping the spike for my whole life, the days are numbered on my cheapo double bass), I plan to pass a thread with a weight on it through the hole at the bottom, get that out through an F hole and then use the thread to pull the old spike back into place. Is that sensible or will it require more major surgery? Many thanks in advance.
13. Has anybody signed up to this? Was it good?
14. The riff from Day Tripper on my Vintage acoustic bass. It also works great on double bass transposed up from F to G so that the D and G are open strings
15. Hmm. Be careful what you wish for. The reason we got miming and autotune is because people didn't like the unreliability of live performing. Yes, a lot of notes were delivered flat. That song was, I would say, more written for studio performance and is difficult to do live, given with the dynamic variation and Adele's emotionally laden style of singing. I am sure she has better nights than this one. I, for one, would rather have truly live performance and I'll take the rough with the smooth.
You'll never hear that 'cos I don't describe myself as a singer... As for my "flat" comment... I love some singers with very odd voices... Tom Waits, hell, even Dylan... some can sound amazing out of tune, some don't. If this doesn't trouble your ears, fair play! 16. Yes, certainly. Rationality flies out the window and for some totally inexplicable reason "I'd quite like" becomes "I absolutely must own". And I wouldn't call myself a particularly spontaneous or impetuous person. I just don't know what comes over me. When the red mist calms down, you just better hope you can live with the consequences
17.
... 2wheeler... Do you mean the sixth on the Am? Easy, Scott. http://www.scottsbasslessons.com http://www.scottdevinemusic.com
Yes, spot on. (I could be wrong but I think) the original line there descends the Dorian (i.e. major 6th), while you had the minor 6th from the Aeolian scale. Listening to the original again, I couldn't swear that they don't mix them up. I really liked your version. I thought the minor 6th was darker and somehow suited the whole thing better (maybe because of Tatiana's voice, maybe just something to do with the whole band sound). But I'm pretty suyre it's not the same as the original. Regards, Nick (Tall thin guy asking lots of questions at the Harrogate bass bash )
18.
You wouldn't believe the amount of trouble he had with getting Lufthansa to get that bass into the hold too. He was upgraded to business class to meet the weight restrictions.
I have had really good experiences driving to Germany. From anywhere in the North East, you can easily get to Hull. Then the ferry takes you to Rotterdam. It's about 5 hours from there to Frankfurt, which means you arrive about the same time you would have done if you had flown first thing. It's a bit pricey for one person but if 2-3 people travel together, the costs are comparable with flying.
19.
That would add a few verses to his song, me thinks. Anyone care to suggest some lines?
Lots has been done on the subject already. My favourite so far is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo
20.
...and I am willing to wager that both Van Morrison and myself smile all the way to the bank.
Hmmm.... Slavery was very profitable but that doesn't justify it.
21. Don't get spooked by the communications glitches. Yes, it's discourteous but you never really know what's going on. Keep an open mind, it might work out. Even if it doesn't work out, you wouldn't have gained anything by going in with a suspicious attitude.
22. Thanks of posting that Scott. I enjoyed the video diary. And the Harrogate Bass Bash workshop. Possibly cheeky question about trade secrets: why do you flatten the sixth in the Let's Dance bass line?
23. I have been told that having every instrument solo was originally done purely for commercial reasons. The professional musicians in the band wanted a chance to show off their individual skills to make sure they got booked for gigs.
24.
Kidnapped Scott and Geoff and demanded lessons in exchange for release.
Geoff is a very good teacher and motivator. When I started having lessons with him, I just wanted a therapeutic activity to keep me from getting bored while I recovered from an operation. I aimed to have a few lessons and stop when I went back to work. He got me hooked. And four years on, I am as keen as ever.
25.
... PS The Zon was this ...the actual same one reviewed in the latest issue of BGM
Yes, that's the one. It's a thing of beauty to see and hear. I actually got a shock when I found out how much it was. Okay, I can't actually afford it so this is academic but I would have put it nearer £2000 before I knew the price.
