1. Welcome Steve, Enjoy the forum. Are you a Beatles fan? Or is there another reason for your user name?
2. I was lucky enough to have seen John Martyn a couple of times when he was in his pomp in the seventies. He was the first person I saw use loop pedals. Solid Air was a massively influential album I've always thought that every subsequent British singer/songwriter sounded different after it. Anyway, the main point of this post was to remind people that Dave Pegg also plays bass on the album, as well as Danny Thompson. I think Peggy is a very underrated player.
3. Every effects pedal made since the dawn of time. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in.
4. Been over to buy a hard case from Stephen tonight. A lovely case, and a good transaction. Stephen's a good friendly guy, pleasure to do business with him.
5. Bought a Speakon ended lead off Peter tonight. All smooth and good business. He even let me have a little play on his beautiful G&L. What a gent.
6.
I always use bronzewounds on my Washburn AB. Usually Elites though had some Adamas strings off ebay which were great too. I just like the overall tone that bronze gives, so never felt the need to change really.
Same with me. I like my acoustic bass guitar to sound like a low-register acoustic guitar. Which is what it is.
7. Bought a Fender CIJ 57RI Precision off Tom. Perfect transaction. Quick, smooth courteous. Extremely well packaged. Highly recommended
8. Welcome to Basschat John. Where are you in Holland? I spent a couple of years working in Arnhem for BASF. You have a fine country and you appreciate your rock!
9.
Hey all heres a link to one of the band I session for Wolfette single 'Different Story' which will be out 1st August on I-tunes etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-iHvKyjfdA...nel_video_title Appreciate it if you all take a look!
Nice. But, I've always been a sucker for wind-blown hair and levitation. Good track, good vid.
10. Played a venue new to us last night, the Temple Hotel in Matlock Bath. For those who don't know it, Matlock Bath is the one of the top midlands biker run-outs at the weekend. A grand, but faded, 18th century building with fantastic views over the Derwent gorge. I pondered the Frankenstein connections. A fairly standard pub gig, plenty of punters but no room to dance. Good selection of real ales. The guitarist was gear stalked, a chap was standing about 2 metres in front of him watching him intently. Might have just been a mesmerised local though Woke up at 2am in the living room with a half empty bottle of Bud in my hand.
11. Not one that I bought, but one bought for me. I gave a bit of help and advice on buying a guitar to a workmate and he gave me pick fashioned out of a USA silver dollar. I don't know how much it cost. Presumably at least a dollar
12.
Should anyone be interested. http://www.thelastmiles.com/interviews-mar...u-revisited.php
Thanks for the 'heads up' Pete. Great album, great artists. I was at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham about a year ago when the sound engineer played it through the PA pre-gig. It sounded electrifiying through a decent rig. It turned a few heads.
13.
Hello I am the boy I've been playin fir about 6 mths now. I'm building a few basses and am having some troubles. 14.
Howdy folks Fairly new here, and relatively new to bass playing. Currently play a Jazz copy (that I bought from McNach of this here parish!) in this band: http://www.supermarionation.co.uk Our EP is available for listening on the website and via spotify and the usual online retailers... I started playing bass as a sideline to guitar, but I've recently decided to take the bass playing more seriously, so we'll see what happens...music wise I'm into most things. Not a big fan of slap bass and overly showy stuff though---I'd rather be Robbie Shakespeare than Victor Wooten!
Welcome Uncle. I agree with your attitude to bass playing. I'd also bet that Robbie is a bigger hit with the ladies than Victor is. Have fun.
15.
play and sing at the same time?
Like a lot of people I find it very difficult to play bass and sing at the same. But, like most things, with practise and motivation it would probably come. I can sing and play rhythm guitar though. I put it down to the fact that somewhere in the chord I'm playing will be the note I'm singing. With a bassline, unless it's a very simple one, that's not the case. The playing of one note and the singing of a different one puts my brain into overload and without meaning to I stop doing one of them. I've got a bandmate who can sing and play violin at the same time. That impresses me!
16. +1 for the comments on here. I'm similar age and decreptitude to Happy Jack and can confirm it's a one hand lift. Sometimes I get a raised eyebrow or a shake of the head when I walk in with a cab in one hand, amp over my shoulder and gig bag in the other hand. The sniggering soon stops.
17.
Last night was my FIRST EVER gig, so I am just relieved i got through it. I've only been learning since February. I have good friend who writes and sings comedy songs and he asked me to play bass on 5 songs at a charity gig. He was on guitar, bass drum and kazoo and there was also a banjo player. Well, I hit a few bum notes but at least I didn't drop anything or fall over! I had to stop playing completely during the banjo 'solo' as he seemed to be swithching from G to D in a totally random fashion that I just couldn't grasp!! Luckily I knew most of the people in the audience so they were all very complimentary afterwards. And we raised £100 for the charity which was the main thing. I've been doing acting and dancing since the age six, so am quite used to performing, but this was a whole new thing for me! I have never been so nervous in my life! But of course am now hoping there will be an opportunity for another one, now I've been bitten by the bug!
Excellent! Congratulations on having such a good time at your first gig. You did the right thing stepping away from the banjo solo. Less chance of being hit by a stray bullet. Now you've got the bug, what's next?
18.
Saturday night - small pub (two towns up the coast) Christmas Party - that's right, 25th JUNE!!!!!!!!! The pub passed round the bucket for a local charity and collected more than we were paid (which is great) and then asked us to play again in December with a major increase in pay!
So, the December gig's got to be a summer solstice job. Complete with druids and a cardboard Stonehenge.
19.
As far as I'm concerned, there is a huge difference between the professional 'band' musicians and professional 'working' musicians.
That's interesting. What exactly do you mean?
20. There's going to be lots on this one I think. My 2pees worth is that similar to most 'jobs', a pro musician has to be; able to get on with other people (almost 24-7 if on tour), reliable, punctual, healthy, motivated, etc. Also, and not least, being able to put up with the 'befores' and 'afters' of performing. People sometimes seem impressed if I tell them what I get as my share of the band's fee (when they ask). Then I explain that I was actually out the house for six hours, not just the 1 hour I played!
21. And a big fat welcome in return. A bit of intense sparseness is always good for the soul.
22. Welcome to Basschat Bruce. I must admit to a softspot for the 'Shads' having played a few numbers of theirs over the years. The first wave of 'Britpop'
23. This place is a bit far to travel for you, but they are only 15 minutes west from J23 of the M1. http://www.leicestershire-luthier.co.uk/index.html They do my Fenders. Very well too. I know the owner, Nigel, has Ric experience because I've seen them in his workshop and spoke to him about them. Might be worth dropping them an email.
