If you can, get yourself over to next Saturday's Bash Bash at Enderby. (10th May). There's going to be at least one person there with an EUB. I'm sure friendly advice and the chance of a try-out with help you. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/228206-midlands-bass-bash-2014-100514/ Personally I am a very new starter to the upright world having just acquired a Stagg EUB. I'm at least the 4th BCer to have it. That's about as 'budget' as you can get! The prevailing wisdom seems to be; 1. EUB's don't really sound like a proper upright (unless you get a very expensive or specialised one) 2. Playing an EUB often results in a bad attack of GAS for a 'real' upright. Also, I'm not sure many (if any) EUBs can be played sitting-down. If you normally sit down for your pit work and/or other bands that might be a deal-breaker for you. Len

As a very recent joiner to the upright world (a Stagg EUB, of which I am at least the 4th BCer to own) this is very interesting stuff. Can anybody please enlighten me on the relative dimensions and differences between different upright basses? The half-size isn't literally half the size of a full bass is it?

A band from the 70's with RP and Elkie Brookes sharing vocals. They were great. I saw them at a flea-pit called Cleo's in Derby in about '74.

Bought Dave's EUB off him today. We only time for a brief meeting at Doncaster Services on the M18, but Dave seemed a thoroughly nice chap and he was a pleasure to do business with.

You're right. Because of the economics involved in maintaining one, and the relative decline in popularity of classical music a lot of people haven't had the chance to experience the sheer power of a live orchestra. Neither of my daughters, who are 20 and both musicians, have seen a full orchestra live. I've been trying to remedy that. Easter is a good time as there are quite a few seasonal Oratorios and Masses put on in most towns and cities. Feel the heft.

Sounds very Pooey on the face of it. What about the guitarist with the broken foot? Is he part of the betrayal? Maybe you and him are the nucleus of a new band. And it sounds as if either one of you has hold of the PA...

Sometimes I run out of EQ 'fiddle time' or just get bored and stop doing it. No one ever seems to notice anyway.

I've got a Roland Micro Cube RX for bass. I use it for home practice. Rehearsals with acoustic bands. Busking (can run on 6AA batteries). It's never going to move much air, but the useful features it has got are; An in-built tuner Several effects (chorus, octave, wah, flanger, delay, reverb. Aux in headphones/record out Metronome A 'drum machine' - which is several pre-set rhythm styles (e.g. rock, jazz, country, latin)and is quite good fun to use.
