What spec Mac needed for basic live multi track recording?
itsmedunc replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
I'd actually missed this bit of your previous post! Thanks for the info, it's really helpful. I'm sure there's a laptop here kicking about with similar specs. Mission to find that and download Mixtools then! So, it looks like the Mac A1181 may well do the job too, without an SSD. I know it will play back 16 channels of audio in Logic X. I'll try it out with Logic, Tracks Live today at some point as well. Thank you! I only need the WAV to import into Logic at a later date. -

That sounds like a sensible solution! If you don't mind me asking, what netbook and software are you using? -
They did release a VM Telecaster bass apparently. Never heard of them before. They came out about 6 years ago?

What spec Mac needed for basic live multi track recording?
itsmedunc replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
Appreciated, the expense would have been far more than most could have afforded. I think I'll try Tracks Live on the old Mac, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.13ghz, 4gb RAM (but will take 6gb), use an external SSD drive and see what results I can get. It's all just got me thinking. I recently sold my Mac Mini 2.5ghz, 16 RAM in favour of a 2013 Macbook Pro that would definitely do the job, No doubt the Mini would have done it too but I just wanted something truly portable. Only problem is, I saw a 27" iMac 2013, 3.2ghz, 16gb RAM (upgradable to 32gb), 1tb fusion drive for silly silly money and bought that instead! Portability is a no no and I'm back in the same position with no money to buy a Macbook! Hence the question posed - what can I get away with! -

54,000 duly noted! 'These days", is an interesting term. Surely, in the past folk would have achieved decent results without the technology available today? -

Everyone above is more or less saying what I thought. However, a bit of an online search and some folk seem to dismiss maxing out the ram and processing power. The machine needs to run its own OS and the program used to record. A faster hdd than 54,000 sounds fair but the more I think about it, it's only audio. No signals are being processed with fx, sims etc. I'm going to have to resurrect the old Mac A1181 and give it a whirl. Hypothetically, if I was to plug in a bass to the X18, record enable 16 tracks in Logic and set all the input sources to the same, I should then be able to record 16ch of audio simultaneously. Does that sound a fair test or are there other factors to consider? -
Amazing the conflicting reports online as to the spec needed. Opinions range from the latest top spec Mac to the oldest and most basic models. Recording 16 tracks live (without plugins, just the raw audio) with Logic X, Tracks Live etc, what spec have you used (and what software) to achieve a good decent (and beyond) standard? In particular used in conjunction with Behringer X18 - Xr18's.

Sorry about the pics. Will get better ones. Up.. As above. Have the box for the desk and rubber case and charger for iPad. Both in good but gigged condition Brilliant setup for gigging and recording plus the advantage of no multicore needed. Selling as I've bought an XR18 and have far too many tablets! Would love to keep but having two is far too indulgent. Would trade for, decent spec MacBook Pro, electronic drum kit (plus cash your way if needs be), Octapad. Collection and demo from BB22SH in person preferred but will post at buyers risk. Send your own insured courier.is no problem. Postage not included.

Great bass. Had its twin. Mine sounded really deep and dark. Should have kept it but GAS always gets the better of me!

That is a shame really. Bit flippant saying I hoped they'd gone. I'm sure the staff here had/have something to do with Blackburns employment policy. There's loads of apprenticeships. There was one job recently advertised on the council website for an apprentice ice cream server? It's boomtown really!

Have they gone into administration? Hope so. Normally I'd be bothered about people's jobs but every time I'd been to my local branch everyone appeared to be brain dead when it came to anything remotely electronic. 😂

Maplins looking for a speaker lead. They had a few different shortish leads all packaged but none specified what they were actually for. Me - is this a speaker or guitar lead Shop - they're all the same anyway (6 foot gorilla talking) Me - (five foot five in a don't fosters me about tone) No they are not! Shop - (now sheepish) well, I know they aren't really but it will do Me - (sound of my footsteps heading towards the door) I don't know if all Maplins are the same but ours has to be the worst place for advice. Never mind the prices!

If it was a bit warmer up here I'd volunteer! I'm only about 5 miles away!

Ashdown Mibass 2.0. Big problem (Resolved)...
itsmedunc replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
It's out of warranty. The price is very good and I think I'll go for it. I don't think I can be bothered with all the hassle of complaint procedures etc either. It's just a bit depressing that another company seems to have made an error and the consumer has to pay for it. According to the phone call today, that's what happened with the Mibass production. It all seems pretty plain to me - they fitted the wrong driver in some of the units... Even though it states 250w on the driver, he then said more or less take that with a pinch of salt and went on to say it was a 250/500w. Not 500 peak but another Chinese used measurement which I've now forgotten the name. After a while it basically meant it was half of 500 anyway! It seems nobody wants to talk RMS now and fudge around with other figures. The fact that it was 4ohm and not suitable was more of less rejected. For the cost of the replacement, although fekin annoying, it's not worth raising my already high blood pressure any more! The moral of the story is - If buying a Mibass combo, always take a philips screwdriver with you! -
Ashdown Mibass 2.0. Big problem (Resolved)...
itsmedunc replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
Ashdowns email reply following the phone call. Hi Duncan Here is my suggestion to sort out your dilemma Remove the speaker from the extension cabinet and fit it into the combo, this will give you a 10” Mibass combo at 8 ohms with the full range driver. Purchase an eminence beta 10” 250/500 watt driver and fit it into the extension cabinet, this will then get you back to the required 4 ohms when used with the combo. We can supply this speaker for 29.95 + shipping at 5.30 and vat. As I said to you on the phone this is at cost price to help you out of the situation you have found yourself in. Please let me know if you wish to proceed. I don't think anyone is actually listening to what I've said. Or, I've been fobbed off!!! -
Ashdown Mibass 2.0. Big problem (Resolved)...
itsmedunc replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
Spoke with Ashdown today. Lots of facts and figures but the upshot is - They say it is the right speaker? Apparently, the first lot had no extension capability as they made it as a standalone with the 4ohm. Then it became apparent that customers wanted an extension and so they added an output and started producing the Mibass extension cabs. I believe this is where the problem has arisen. If what they say is right, then my combo should not then have a 4ohm, it's been fitted in error. The head has an extension out and then should be 8ohm. Still they say it's the right driver. So, they've offered me an Emminence Beta 10 250w 8ohm for about £30 plus vat, plus shipping. I've swapped drivers from the extension to the combo as they are exactly the same apart from the ohms. Looks like, either buy another driver or sell the cab then... -

Ashdown Mibass 2.0. Big problem (Resolved)...
itsmedunc replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
Exactly! The combo has an incompatible driver that it was fitted with originally. I can't see Ashdown deliberately selling the combo with this particular driver but on a few forums (including BC) some owners found that some were shipped with the wrong drivers. I just need someone from Ashdown to agree that it was a mistake on their behalf and be kind enough to rectify it.
