I Am The Leader of Revisionists (I Am)
itsmedunc replied to Frank Blank's topic in General Discussion
Well, I did a gig just before Christmas with one of Gary Glitters Ex drummers. Should his career be ended too due to association? Should I be shunned? 😳 Most folk loved Gary Glitter in the 70's and reconciling his deeds with his music is truly a tough one. I think a lot of folk are too scared to play his tracks even though they still like them. Good on you for listening to what you like and not listening to others sitting in judgement. Funny how there's a good few musicians who blatantly had relationships with children that are still regarded as heroes of the music world though. But that's another story... -
Bought a serialiser box from Pete. Nice chap, great communication and everything went smoothly. If only life was as easy! Thanks again Pete. Cheers Dunc

We tried them in a decent sized pub. Drum soundcheck, got the chest thumping. As soon as the loud guitarist started the thump couldn't be heard. He is at least twice as loud as needed. Limiting the sound onstage is a must but unfortunately the guitarist can't see it. The cabs are loud and may well do the job. The situation is a bit vexing to say the least at the moment.. If I had the choice I'd buy a sub.but I really don't think we need it, we need to sabotage the guitarists amp! You are welcome to try mine out. Don't know what the logistics would be like though. ..

After buying and storing all the PA plus all accessories, maintaining it, transporing it to and fro from gigs. Setting it up and looking after it while other members go for a wander until 15 mins before the gig. I wouldn't entertain a band member who would begrudge me a lift anywhere!

Ditched our heavy PA for 2 Barefaced FR800's and a Behringer X18. Great lightweight setup. Would have liked to try the RCF mentioned above too though. The BF's were lighter so opted for them without a trial. They are good but can't get the guitarist to turn down so the rig is always in a competition with him...

Have similar problems and all the rest of the lads now help me out. They didn't before. Setting up and lugging the PA to gigs and taking it home and upstairs was always left to me. The great irony is that I sold then PA and replaced it with a pair of Barefaced FR800's and a Behringer X18 desk. All the mics and cabling go in a 4U rack SKB case. Went onto in ears and sold all the monitors bar one which the drummer keeps, stands and lighting are all lightweight with a small packed footprint (as you know Paul!). I've been using a 1x10 combo for a long while now too. Back to the irony, now there's only around 10 items to move and it's all lightweight, I get a hand with the carriage and setup! i still help the other lads though, as you say, it's the right thing to do. After the last rehearsal, the singer and I went to the pub. He carried my bass for me! I've never been as well off! I think if (given your position), anybody had anything to say, I'd tell them to sod off. Sounds like you've done your fair share. Not many singers can say the same! 😂

Aye, I know about the cabs having to be plugged in thanks. I've also been onto OBBM this morning but thanks for the info 😀 Hi, it's a Selmer Treble n Bass 50.

Ah! Now that's great to hear. I was just a bit worried the head wouldn't have enough power to drive them properly. The head is either 8 or 16 ohm and the cabs both 8ohm. I'm going to get a serialiser to rectify that to change the cabs combined to 16 ohm. Thanks

I've got 2 Ashdown mini neo 408's, one at 500w and the other 1000w. My question is - are they too powerful for a 50w valve head? If so, what would be a more suitable wattage?

I couldn't lift it in the house, never mind get it in the train!!! On the night I did the PA, his amp was buzzing. There was a crack in the plug. He changed that and voila! You never know. I used it's bigger brother for years, the one with the parametric eq. Can't remember the model now. Truly a great sound. That also had a buzz at idle and it turned out to be too many earth's in my chain. Maybe it's the power outlet you have been using?

Start-up bands, how long does it take to start gigging?
itsmedunc replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
One originals band took 18 months. We were super tight though. Last covers band took 3 rehearsals. It really all depends on many different factors. One band hat I play in never do their homework and if it wasn't for me pushing to get more material done, we would still be doing the same songs from 10 years ago. Encouragement rather than telling them works far better. Takes longer but the same result. Think we are on 12 years together now. -
I bought Dave's Bugera. Arrived very quickly, well packaged and as described. Really easy deal with no complications and a nice fella too. Highly recommended. Thanks again Dave. Cheers Dunc

Many years ago, the bloke in the flat below used to play music really loudly at all sorts of silly times. Early morning, middle of the night etc. I asked him to stop several times but he just ignored me. Alas, the poor fella didn't know I was a bass player. One morning I connected my stereo to my stack, laid the cabs face down on the floor and put Metal Box album by PIL. I then went out and came back late in the evening. It had played over and over for over 12 hours. He never played music that loud or at stupid times again. I don't think he even talked to me again. I was a lot younger then and now would probably seek a peaceful solution. You never know they could be PIL fans 🤐

Just bought some Ashdown cabs from Si. Tremendous cabs they are too! Exactly as they should be. Great guy in every way to deal with. Always a pleasure to meet other BC'ers face to face. Thanks again Si. Until the next time! Cheers Dunc

I'm sure fine grit would work but I had thought that the rough grit (when tightened), would crush most of the sharp edges on the paper, make a shallower shim and stop it slipping too? Depends on the height needed I suppose. 🤔
-
Had a couple of vintage Fender P basses and both of them had rough grit sandpaper at the back of the pocket. I would swear it had been in there since production. Both played and sounded well. If I was ever going to shim a neck, that's what I'd use.

Aye, that shop sells some complete cak. They even have a precision body for spares? Grossly overpriced too.

Bought a neck from Lewis. Arrived as described, quickly and in bulletproof packaging. Great communication and a pleasure to deal with throughout. Can't ask for any more than that. Thanks again Lewis. Cheers Dunc

Don't need to sell it now. Found out it's more than loud enough for my needs with the right cab. Decided to strip the tolex and refurb too. Not had this long and fully intended on keeping it. Unfortunately, need to move it on. In good condition for it's age but far from cosmetically perfect. Recently had a £100 service and a clean bill of health. Runs at 8 Ohm. Lovely amp for both bass and guitar. Just acquired a pair of Ashdown 2x8 cabs and so looking for a tube driven (hybrid tube preamp is fine)head 500w plus. Ashdown or Orange. Try me. Collection from Blackburn BB22SH or would post at buyers risk and cost. If interested in postage please PM to discuss options. May be able to meet up. Pics to follow.
