If the body design "pulls" to the player's right, it'll help the reach for F0, but nonetheless.. I guess string choice is problematic though. Edit- are those flats from an upright, perchance?
-
Ah, but which came first? The Bongo or the Pig? I think Musicman might just have a case for copyright infringement. Peppa Pig was first shown at NAMM 2003, whereas the Bongo first appeared on TV in 2004. Oh. No, wait ...

Maybe I'm not digging in enough? Two others in my collection sound thick and dirty by comparison. Both have monster pickups with big magnets. Perhaps that's a thing?

You're right, the EQ just keeps on giving (or taking; depends which way you turn the controls!) It's not that big. The Warwick that preceded it was quite a bit heavier. This was a "reasonably priced" punt. Normally, I'd have tried out various basses and selected one from the stock I'd played. Other options were; Ibanez EHB1506 or 1006 Dingwall Combustion 3/6 or an NG 3/6 G&L ASAT (I know, it's a 4) But this sat in the middle of the group, and I recall playing a Bongo 5HS and liking it, so decided to simply order it. Seems like I got it right this time.

On a piece of string tied to a bass cab handle. Works a treat mid-gig.

Musicman Bongo 6 HH in Candy Apple Red. A six to replace a Streamer LX6 that was sold to cover legal fees. Arrived 43 hours after I ordered it from Bass Direct, securely packed and delivered on time (DHL) Lovely neck. Weighs 9lb 6oz, so not too bad. I thought the 18mm string spacing might prove problematic, but it's not. It's very "polite" sounding, but in the context of the other instruments I own, that's not a problem. Issues? Fingerprints show up really badly! If you rest your forearm against the body, it damps a smidge of the resonance out of the sound. Everything else is either fine or not a issue for me, so it's all good so far.

Definitely DHL. Used the app to track it. Had the logo on the van.

Package arrived safe and sound, well packed and at the specified time. Well done BD and DHL.

I'm sure that the Dingwall strings are fine for 99% of players. Alas that my sweat is supremely acidic. I turned all the brass door handles black at my parents' house, and gold bass hardware goes green, particularly control knobs. Elixirs are a must for me, I'm afraid.

I've always used Whirlwind cables. Someone gave me a 10m and 2x 5m over 25 years ago. They're still going strong. I've bought some shorter ones now recently, and they're fine, too. I've only seen the green goo in mains cables myself, never co-axial signal cables.

I'm probably not that bothered about what goes on there. As it's got black hardware, a black nylon JAN III will look more of-a-piece than a brass one. Anything will be better than the evil JAN II...

They all sat on the fence over headless basses, didn't they! Only Pete Skjold got close to saying anything meaningful on the topic. And for those that had never built one, have they never seen, examined or played one? At least they were more vocal on the effects of chambering. And almost a unified voice on custom builds, with advice that mostly mirrors what you'd hear from BC on the subject. Would've been funny if they'd had Ned Steinberger in there!

Thankyou, gents. I shall pursue this further.. and replace the JAN II which has as also self- destructed.

A Dingwall was a possibility, but I was concerned about string availability and choice, especially in a 6. Thanks, I've liked other Bongos I've tried. Hopefully, this one will be no different.
-
Um.... I'm not sure?
-
Yes (but the Cherry one, not the white one!) Edit- didn't realise the white one was a 5HH. It wasn't on the radar..
-
Uh... it's quite large, has too many strings and resembles a toilet seat. Not entirely sure it'd be to your liking!
-
Just ordered a something from them. First time I've tried using Bass Direct. Let's see how it goes... 🤞

Does anyone know if there are any tuners that are a direct drop-in replacement for the standard Warwick units. I've had 5 fail on my 2002 Infinity, 2 of which were replacement Warwick units. They're just made of really soft metal and keep stripping themselves during tuning. Ideally good quality- Schaller, Hipshot etc.

By the way, "Zardoz" was set in 2023... OK. It was 2293.. And didn't she have a relationship with a keyboard player?

Before his TIM.

I had thought to look into an EHB 1506 or 1006. Or a similarly priced Dingwall. The Ibanez score highly due to my ability to use my string of choice (Elixirs) and their compactness. One of the 6- string Combustions looks rather nice, but I get the feeling that I'll be stuck with their strings, which my sweat will eat instantly.

Mine has become my plug-and- play go to for headphones. I don't even use the app much, as the first 4 patches (accessible via the device) are enough. Just plug in, connect it to a tablet (better for Spotify) and play along.

Musicman Stingray - Such a love/hate relationship
Lfalex v1.1 replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
I had a '90 Fretless Ray5. I regret selling it, but since have acquired 2 other (albeit fretted) alternatives; Warwick Fortress Masterman 5 Ibanez EDC 715 Both have really good pickups- The Ibanez has the one from the ATK, plus it's got arguably better coil switching than even the SR5. Both were SH, and collectively cost about half what a new SR5 would. -
Started with a P. Didn't really gel with it. Had a J. Even though it was nice, it lacked "clout". Had a Yamaha Attitude, but you need 2 amps or FX capable of parallel-processing both pickups' outputs. Bought a G&L SB-2 Tribute on here. It's great. Dial in a tone and leave it alone for the night. I like the down- sized body, too. Less cumbersome than the Fender items.
