[/quote] I think you are totally correct - I was talking to my dad about this the other day (who is the real fan!), and he said that Lincoln was the third Cockney Rebel bassist to pass away. The first two albums were recorded under the name 'Cockney Rebel', and the third (which 'Come Up and See Me' is from) was Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - but was totally different lineup. I think George Ford was the bassist on this.
  2. Si, Jazzneck, I unfortunately didn't know Lincoln personally, so my memories are limited to seeing him on stage. My dad has been a fan of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel since he was a teenager, and started dragging me along to his gigs rather than my mother in my late teens. I've been to see Steve Harley (either with or without Cockney Rebel) every time they've played Glasgow since 1999, plus a trip to Birmingham to see them perform the first two albums with an orchestra. Anyway, I think the first time I saw Lincoln was at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow - probably 2001 or 2002. He was a great player without showing off, always complimentary to the music and cool looking! Don't think I'll every capture his look, but he definitely had an influence on my playing. As a young gigging bassist in an originals band with an egotistical singer/guitarist, I kept trying to push myself forward in the band - generally overplaying rather than playing a good bassline. I came home from that gig with a different outlook - I'd do a better job if I tried to play more like Lincoln Anderson and less like Jaco Pastorious.   4. Realise he may not be particularly well known, but bassist Lincoln Anderson died yesterday. I've seen him live several times, with of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. He was an excellent player, bringing his own touch to the band. He will definitely be missed.

Look good too - dark green threads looks much better on my black P than the red ones that Rotosound use. Believe they are made by D'Addario too (though definitely not Chromes).
  8. In my old band, which had two guitarists, I took seriously ill just before a gig (ended up in a coma). They did the gig without me, and one of them used a whammy pedal set to -12 to cover the 'noticable' bass parts! It had 'George in a box' sticker on it forever more!
  9. How we have agreed to rehearse is to learn say 5 new songs ahead of a rehearsal, then get it tight when we are together. When everyone bothers to do it, it works well. What actually happens more often than not is:[list] [*]The guitarist will give them a quick play through an hour before the rehearsal and apologise because he didn't have time to learn them properly (amazingly, he finds time to watch every football game that's been on!). Inevitably he'll insist we drop one he doesn't like... [*]The drummer will have a listen to them in the car on the way to rehearsal. [*]The vocalist will either sing it fabulously or need us to change the key. Apparently she can't tell if key is okay until she tries singing with the band - can never know when singing along with the record! [/list] Frustrates the life out of me.....   12. I had a Chinese built ATK200. Generally very well built, great sound. One minor quality issue was a pickguard screw in at a bit of angle. Never tried the old ones though, so no benchmark! A lot of bass for not much cash.
  13. £200 four ways for 2.5 hours work on stage is a rough deal - especially taking waiting around and setup time. Saying that, if it's local and you can get in and out quickly, I suppose its a paid gig if nothing else!
  14. I've been to a few of holiday camps over the past eight years. I found that the entertainment at the typical caravan park is much as described above, though I have come across the occasional fully live band (one that sticks in my head were called 'Beardsmith' - who were a family - from the middle aged dad to the 10 year old son on drums!). When the kids were a bit younger though, we took them too Butlins in Skegness, and I thought the entertainment was great. They had a live-show done by the in-house entertainers most nights - cabaret style singers & dancers, backed by a fully live band. Later on, they would have another band doing a more typical live show, or perhaps a tribute act. Don't get me wrong, they their fair share of X Factor rejects - however, this could be a positive, since they had two venues - and the venue with the 'star' in it would inevitably be far busier - meaning a decent seat in the other!

I used to encounter this type of thing regularly back when I played in originals bands - four bands all playing short sets with not enough space for 4 sets of equipment, never mind time to change over. In my experience, the bass amp was typically just for on-stage monitoring, as the sound guys insisted on using their own DI boxes. Can work quite well, but the bands have to discuss beforehand to make it work. We played a charity event in a pub a couple of years ago, the guy arranging it said the 'headline' act were providing the backline, so don't bother bringing any anything other than our instruments (cymbals etc for the stickman!). Few snide remarks from the band on the night - 'not bad just turning up with guitars using someone elses gear'. The really interesting piece was when we discovered what gear they had.... guitarist had a full 2 x 4 x 12 Marshall stack - for a 100 capacity pub outside Glasgow! Our guitarist normally uses a 1x12 combo. Bass rig was a bit more sensible, thankfully. They were an Ozzy / Black Sabbath tribute - totally mis-matched to my band which played pop covers! That was our final multi-band gig - been nothing but functions since!

[/quote] There's typically no disco up here - just a band. Good money to be made - some bands charging 2 grand - but playing 50 songs is hard work!

[/quote] I've not been in an originals band for about 8 years, but back in the day this was about the only way a young originals band could get a gig in central Glasgow. In 1999, The Arena & Strawberry Fields (both now sadly gone!) on Oswald Street seemed to run an identical deal - 4 bands, all had to sell 20 tickets each at £4, handing over all the cash (£80). Anything over 20, and you could keep it. Plenty of other places that are still in business that I won't name had similar deals, right up until I quit my last originals band in about 2006. We played several times in a venue famous for being where a certain britpop band were discovered. Aside from a few local band nights that we 'headlined', we provided support to some signed, touring (but largely unknown!) bands. Also provided support to the guitarist from a well known 80's band who was doing a solo tour. In all of these, we had to sell tickets to play, plus supply the majority of the crowd. I know some folk playing in originals bands, and I get the impression it still goes on in Glasgow. Playing a decent venue on a quiet night, in front of a few mates who've paid a fiver to see you and three other bands play for 30 minutes each. My opinion is that they are a bit exploitative, but if done only occasionally, you can have a bring in a good crowd and make a little money. However, it may also be worthwhile looking at how much it would cost to hire a venue yourself. We did it once - it cost about £65 to hire Barfly on a Friday night, including a sound engineer. We could sell tickets for as much as we liked, and we decided on timings, line up etc. I got one mate to do an acoustic set, then another to do a rock set before we went on. I took £20 each from them, and they could kept whatever else they made from tickets. I know of at least one venue that will still offer a deal like that - and I know that some 'promoters' use it for pay to play nights!

  23. Most recent hits on our setlist are Sing & Counting Stars. Sing is quite fun to play, but needs a singer with a decent range who can also rap! Our vocalist split it between them!
  24. After several attempts to expand my four piece function band to five by addding a keyboard, I've decided to try and learn myself. We've binned a few songs because they frankly sound crap with just bass, drums & guitar. I'm still going to be mainly on bass, but switch to keys for a few numbers and cover the low end with my left hand. Before I can do this, I need to learn to play! Can anyone give any advice? I'm not entirely un-knowledgable, I had some lessons when I was school, but I'm far from competent! What I've been doing so far is: - Leaning common chords - Figuring out major scales - done C,G,D,A,E & B so far! - Playing along with songs I know the chords for - basic chords with my right hand and root notes with my left. - Trying to read treble-clef - using an iPad app where you play the notes it shows you on a virtual keyboard. I've tried looking online for lessons, but they generally are very basic. Any advice anyone can give would be much appreciated!
