1. Ordered on at the start of August, were due to be back in stock at the end of August. Now pushed back to late September...hopefully doesn't get pushed back further. They suggested an alternative of a much larger and heavier Taurus cab.
2. I play in a band with an orchestral violinist, and her violin is worth about the same as my house, her bow about the same as my car and she pays as much for a set of strings as some folk on here have paid for a bass! Of course, there are far cheaper alternatives, but she insists there's a clearly noticable difference in sound. Presumably her orchestra collegues are much the same. Personally, I think I'd struggle to tell the difference if they all played Chinese mass produced instruments....
3. Indeed! Thought it was a great price. I managed to sell a BC210 for pretty much the same amount, with a Thomann review voucher making up the difference. I reckon I may just bide my time...
4. I'm kind of thinking that too, even though Rumble is £60 more than the TC cab right now!
5. Hi, I have a TC Electronic BH550 head, and until recently had two BC210 cabs. I never really used both cabs, but often fancied something smaller, so I sold one and ordered an RS112 from Thomann - they are currently advertised at about half the best price elsewhere. At the time of ordering, they were due in stock at the end of this August, which was acceptable. Now, they are advising about three more weeks wait! I'm considering alternatives. Any thoughts on the Fender Rumble 112? Or would I be better waiting on the TC cab? It doesn't have to be a 1x12, but this seems to be a good portable option. It's not urgent, except for reasons of GAS! My gigs are generally: small venues with my quite loud originals band - always with PA support, functions/weddings with my typically quiet covers band - Normally no PA support, but always available if required acoustic shows - using my wee bass uke with no PA support My intention would normally be to use one cab, though I may consider the mortal sin of mixing driver sizes occasionally!
6.
You might consider one of the Harley Benton bass ukes, just as something rather different and somewhat uprightish-sounding.
Exactly what I use! Great fun for not much cash, and always gets you noticed!
7.
Voila: http://www.amazon.co.uk/40th-Anniversary-Beacon-Theatre-Region/dp/B00ILAWJLO
Perfect!
8. Cheers guys. Think I'll try to source that long Allman brothers clip on DVD, looks good.
9. I've listening to the Tedeschi Trucks band a lot recently and love some of the bass work. Saw a few live clips too, and think that their now departed Oteil Burbridge is awesome. He also looks like he enjoys his work, a very animated player at times! I know he also played with the Allman Brothers band - not sure what on though. Can anyone recommend any of his work - with the Allmans or otherwise? Cheers!
10. May not be the most helpful response.... I've never used an Ampeg head with a TC cab. I regularly use my TC BH550 head through an Ampeg 8x10 and it works well, though the head sounds better through TC cabs - the seem to have more clarity. I own TC cabs, but the Ampeg is in the reahearsal room I use. I also regularly use the Ampeg SVT sim on my Zoom B3 through my TC cabs when I want a bit more of a dirty tone and get good results.
11. Sounds a bit like the abuse I give the drummer in my originals lineup... How hard can it be? Count to four and hit things with sticks. All tongue in cheek - he knows I know I could never do it!
12. You're realistically looking to solder two wires to fairly large points. You don't need an overly steady hand - it's probably the easiest electronics job you can do. If you mess it up, it's unlikely to damage more than a pot costing a a fiver at most. Have a go!
13. I've used a cocktail stick with pound-shop superglue several times. Works a treat, though sure proper wood glue is technically superior.
14. Bought some strings from Lee. Easy to deal with, quick delivery - no concerns at all.
15. I have a Tonerider in my Mexican P - much nicer sounding than the factory fitted ceramic pickup. By nicer, I mean a less harsh top end, well defined low-mids and on the whole, it delivers a classic P tone. I know some folk swear by the MIM P tone, but I really couldn't get on with it with flats fitted. It was tolerable with rounds for a modern kind of tone. The Tonerider suits flatwound strings perfectly.
16. I have Chromes on my Jazz and Fenders on my Precision. Other that different coloured silks, I can't tell the difference - neither in feel or unplugged tone. The Chromes were far more expensive too.
17. Had a 55-01 for a couple of months. Love it, the only non-Fender bass I've gigged in 15 years.
18.
Lakland. No question. Best 5 string neck I've felt.
^ This! My 5501 is my third attempt at five strings. I had a cheap perspex Wesley that I moved on quickly. Several years later, I bought an Ibanez SR405. I really wanted to like that one, but tight string spacing and a floppy B string meant it also had to go. (I'm comfortable on both P and J necks, but this felt like a guitar to me!) I recently bought a Lakland 5501 and it's simply wonderful. The fifth string is great, crystal clear and nice tension. The neck is quite chunky and the string spacing is similar to a P-bass. I can see why the 35 inch scale might be problematic for some, though it's fine for me. (My hands are pretty average sized too) Costs £699 new, but they do pop up on here used now and then.
19.
I hate this. I had a Yamaha bass nicked once. Most pawn shops don't ask any questions when they get offered good stuff for pennies and if they are a chain store there's a good chance your gear will end up in another shop far away from where you live. I will have around my way. Good luck.
I had a similar opinion to this until recently when I watched a documentary on Cash Converters. I was surprised that they called the cops on a guy trying to shift a stolen phone and did several checks to confirm the authenticity of a Gibson Les Paul. Also, each branch of this chain is actually a franchise, and it appears they had to shift everything they took in themselves - though they had someone whose job it was time list specialist items on EBay so they got top dollar on it.
20. I played a small charity festival up in Stornoway at the weekend, and was told in advance backline would be provided. I bought my wee Tc head with me anyway - it takes up negligible space. I didn't have to bother - I was really impressed with the setup. GK 600 something head, matching 4x10 and 1x15 cabs, but best of all an identical head sat on top as a spare! Slightly bigger festival this weekend with a similar setup. Hopefully as well organised!
21. I'm no expert, but according this article, I date your neck as a 1973 http://www.vintagerocker.com/fender/neck_dates.html 01 - Precision Bass 03 - Maple board 24 - Week 24 3 - 1973 3 - Tuesday Also, based on the serial 1377310, your pots appear to be CTS pots manufactured in 10th week of 1973. http://www.guitardaterproject.org/potcodereader.aspx Hope this helps!
22. I've pretty much only played my steel round strung Lakland since I bought it a couple of weeks ago, and I'm loving the tone of the rounds when playing solo, though to be honest much of it is lost in a band situation. I'm getting used to the feel of rounds again, though I definitely prefer flats my far. I've got a wee bit of slap (1 song!) stuff in my function band now - clearly better on rounds, though I'd be interested to hear if any of you slap flats?
23. I'm in Airdrie which is very close to Cumbernauld. I know some Cumbernauld based bassists, and at least one of them is on here. Let me know if plan A doesn't pan out and I'll help if I can!
24. I've just started my second go at five string bass. I play in a function band, and do have a need for this! My first attempt was a year ago - got an Ibanez SR405. Frankly hated it... B string was floppy and lacked definition. The string spacing was very tight. I sold it after six months to help fund an amp purchase. Two weeks ago, I bought a Lakland 5501 and I'm loving it - none of the things I hated with the Ibanez. I have use it a two three hour rehearsals - one with my originals band, one with my function band. The timbre of a fretted low E is very different to a that of an open string. Occasional low notes are great too - beats using a octave pedal! I've also pretty much stopped hitting wrong notes... I'd say go for it! I wish I did a long time ago.
