I can play the chord tones one after the other fine but its when I come to soloing I get a little mixed up. It's the outlining each chord whilst soloing I get stuck on. I know it's not necessary to outline each chord but when you do what are the best 'notes' to work around or land on to prove that your not just soloing around the key centre Hope that makes sense
-
That's very useful, it puts the arpeggio work in a structure rather me learning peices of information ! The modes I've always dipped in and out of. I know the 'formula' for them but remembering which goes with what chord is a mystery in itself!

Hi I was looking for some guidance so I thought might as well start here! Recently I have been working on being a bit more melodic with my soloing, taking each chord into consideration and not just playing over the key centre. I've also been practicing different intervals as I read they help you when you solo ? My question is what types of excercises can you do to be able to produce more consonant, singing like lines when soloing? Or even any drills that really engage your brain to think about the harmonies that are played? Soloing and using each chord is for me very very difficult. Being used to just playing c minor over blue bossa, now I'm trying to incorporate the different modes and so on just for varied sounding lines. If there is a technique that has worked for you on soloing with different chords please let me know! Any help is greatly appreciated!
I started on the Music Production course back in 2006, switched the Popular Music BA after a semester. It was the best academic decision I've ever made. I understand the college was in financial trouble a few years back, and there were rumours of various mergers (I heard Leeds Met, then Bradford Uni) which then fell through. However, the last I heard, they were saved by some very good sponsorship deals - I heard Steinway and Ableton helped them, maybe a few others too? I also heard rumours that the three music undergraduate courses (pop, jazz and classical) were merged into one course - students could then choose modules in these areas. Don't know whether this is actually true, and I can't say which format would be preferable. Anyway, regardless of the way things are working there right now, it'll be a great decision if you do decide to go there. I met some brilliant musicians, many of whom have continued to be great friends and colleagues. The city and the surrounding areas such as Headingley & Hyde Park are very much student-centric, so it's a vibrant place to be (except outside of term time - it's completely dead then!). One final bit of advice: take all the opportunities you can manage. And take the course by the scruff of the neck - it doesn't guarantee anything afterwards. I refer to my BA as the most expensive piece of paper I ever bought. Hope that made some kind of sense.
thanks for the reply ? Btw, did you audition for a place when you decided to switch?
You could try mailing Scott of Scottsbasslessons.com. He lives in Leeds. He's likely to know some folk in the area. He's also a member on here.
Thanks , will do !
I did the jazz BA and had a great experience. Zoltan Dekany is the main bass tutor and is an incredible player and teacher. Leeds is a fantastic city and the college has a great reputation for the degree courses. ....That said I think the standard of all the main colleges seems really high at the moment and if you have the right attitude you can have an incredible experience at most of them. Its all about getting stuck into as many bands as possible and getting the most from the college. Good luck with the audition and let us know how you get on.
my auditions won't be for a while, next year. I just wanted some guidance on what kind of peices they want to hear and what is the audition process like ? I'm looking to get into the pop and jazz course !

Hi I'm just interested to see who, if anyone from here has been to this music college. If so, what was your experiences like from the beginning ? So from filling in uni forms, auditions and the overall course. Thanks for lookin !
Just been told its at my house, can't wait to get home and see what it's like
You'll love it! I'm saving up for another

It's very bright and beefy, the MM sound for sure. Active circuit was crap though because I had it picking up lights etc, when shielded was ggreat The one I had was normal jazz weight and had a nice neck, really smooth and fast. The one you snapped up was the one I was eyeing up ! i want one again !
I'm so pleased you're not an ABC fan. I have to say I was worried for a mo there. If you HAVE to re-create it, then I too would use a bass for that section. I also have great confidence that your rendition will be SO much better than the original. Especially in the section where you use the flange and overdrive :-P
well when you listen to the song 100+ times you start hating more things than you started out with
-
Haha! This isnt my personal choice of music Just need to recreate it for a peice of school work. All that time i'd thought it must be a bass ...

Which ones would be the most 'thicker' sounding ones ?

Nice one mate, will start doing these excercises !

I was going to ask a question which would be relevent to this but I'll post it on here for some help regarding ear training, recently I was talking to a friend and whilst he was playing i heard a lick that I liked and said 'oh wow, how do you manage to play those cool licks that you have in you head?' He replied with 'i know my instrument inside out, i know exactly wha will sound where etc' getting to this level I am sure ear training has some value. Anyone know of an excercise to develop knowing your instrument or is it endless hours of experimentation? i hope i worded this correctly and the easiest to understand

New Sight Reading Books to be Released at London Bass Show
ML94 replied to Stuart Clayton's topic in Theory and Technique
Cool, sounds great. Will order one myself this week! -
Yeah ive got the same amp. Switching the tweeter off really makes a difference! Also use the Phat control which boost the lows and a cuts the highs but still enough for some clarity. These really are great amps tbh!
