1. I bought a great late seventies 4001. After experimenting with rounds I went for thomastik jazz flats and it's a perfect combination. Effortless playability and tight full late Beatles tone. I have rounds on my other basses but the flats give the bass an amazing presence in recordings and playing live without cluttering up the highs. And, of course, you never have to change strings. A perfect bass. N
2. I use a tubeworks blue tube pedal. Very warm real tube overdrive. There's a rack version out there as well. N
3. Hi Clarky What's the neck profile like? Is it a skinny vintage 62 style? Cheers Nick
4. Holy crap! Lovely bass with tonnes of aggression in the preamp. Thank you VERY much. And, as an aside, it IS true what everyones being saying about the flat board and asymmetric neck. Feels great. Might put up a review/some vids of what this bass can do but first I need to get deep into the preamp, it's very powerful. Wal-like on first tweak. Cheers! Nick
5. I play j basses and rics. It took me many, many years to find a ric that did it for me. Like you I was put off by heavy. club necked, disappoInting basses. After trying quite a few (a drawn out 15 year search!) the bass I went for was a super light 78 4001 with a very thin neck and the most incredible deep and even McCartney-esque tone. Strung with thomastik flats it honestly does something that no other bass can do. When you get a good one they are fantastic basses it seems. They also look very beautiful indeed. Also, I play the ric with a pick and keep the cover on while i play my j the usual way with fingers. The ric suits a different approach for me. Regarding buying one I would try some of the recent 4003s with a thin neck that come up here and spend closer to a grand instead of the silly shop price. Nick
I own a few 4003's. If you sit down and spend some time with it, you'll either get used to the neck and the pickup cover, or still not like the bass. I agree they are wildly overpriced now.
6. What is the scale length and weight on this bass? Thanks, cairo quote name='Johngh' date='May 27 2011, 12:39 PM' post='1246966'] Back for sale bump
7. Lovely big hearted jazz bass here!
8. I have a burgundyglo from a few years later and it is quite simply a beautiful, beautiful thing. I also discovered that Thomastik flats bring out the best in these basses.
9. I had an rbx550 as my second bass and put some emgs in it. It was great. Really nice bass that was well built, light and had a great neck...ahh memories
10. Blue! I'm not a fan of semi acoustic basses, the sparkle is mental and it will sound better IMO of course PLUS that birdseye is lovely...
11. Only Bootsy, Prince, Me'shell and Brownmark should be allowed to slap. Everyone else must stop, and stop now under threat of death.
12. I had a moment there when this one would have the rounds on doing geddy/squire while my burgundyglo would sit there with the flats doing its mccartney thing. Had to go have a cold shower instead though. Close run thing! N
13. I've got to say that I am getting very interested in Adamovic basses. Pure class...
14. Sorry, my mistake...delano. And on further inspection you do say it's very versatile. I will get my coat...long day...
.....................................................Stingray?? never mentioned that word.....MEC pups?? - it's a Delano..
15. Lucky you withdrew it, that Shuker had everything I wanted in a five string at an excellent price. Soundwise, though, I am not a fan of the stingray tone. How would you characterise the tones on offer? Could you run the MEC pup as a single coil or two singles? Cheers Nick
16. morning is this the one with the 35 inch scale? Do you know the date of manufacture? Also, how much does it weigh? Cheers, Nick
17. Argh just missed 'em
Sold pending
18. I'm happy on 4 and 5. If I was going to opt for which end of range to extend it would be adding a high c for chords if I was playing jazz in a trio. I've never been a great fan of the sound and feel of a low b. If I need a low d I detune. Below that I'm not keen on venturing.
19. He's pretty amazing. Very much a one off.
20. What's the weight and the neck profile? Cheers Nick
21. This is a massive sounding j! I miss it
Yep, its Fender shaped so I owned it one stage! This is a truly lovely bass that I regretted selling immediately. Sounds great with the the hum-cancelling UltraJazz p/u's and has a very Precision-like neck, so its suitable for those that don't get on with skinny necks. Superb colour scheme. Lovely lovely
22. The tractor beam is drawing this rick back into the fold... Period of utter madness has passed
23. That a double neck? Impossibly cool...
I definitely wouldn't wouldn't worry about being able to get a sheet of paper under the bridge. That's not real tail lift as far as I'm concerned. Tail lift that actually causes problems, while obviously not unheard of, is not totally widespread. Not great if you do get it, but if it does occur it's easily rectified with a new bridge. The closest I've come to having this problem is in the photograph below. This '75 was strung with horrible extremely high tension roundwounds when I got it. I swapped them for Tomastik Jazz Roundwounds, but took them off after a few weeks as they were just too floppy for my liking. It's had Rotosound Roundwounds on it for the past five years and hasn't moved at all in that time.
