I had to nip out yesterday and as I drove up the road from my house the postman pulled in behind me to deliver to my row. I stopped the car in the road and called back to him, "Have you got anything for me?" He didn't. Why am I so excited? ๐

I got KiOgon to make me a rotary switch for my bass with a single, passive MM pickup (basically the same as yours @stewblack) that switches through four positions, single bridge coil, both coils parallel, both coils series, single neck coil. So I have volume, tone and the rotary switch. As @Dad3353 says, think of the pickup as a pair of single coils mounted next to each other.

I wonder if the lack of live music has had a knock on effect on amp/cab sales, there's only so much volume you need at home. Maybe there'll be some good deals to get some stock shifted.

Rio Isolated Bass Track - is it John Taylor?
Maude replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
He's actually (looks over shoulder to make sure he can't hear) the best drummer I've played with, used to do session work around London, and told Nick Heyward his band was gay when he wanted him for Haircut 100. He was in both my bands but had a heart attack earlier in the year and has had to quit the Mod/Ska band. We were telepathic with each other and I'm now at that point were you realise you'll probably never find that special drummer again. -
Rio Isolated Bass Track - is it John Taylor?
Maude replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
Meh, was it fingers, was it a plectrum, can he play it with fingers? Of course he can. ๐ In my acoustic band the rhythm section is doublebass and cajon and we play it fine. Not a slowed down, warbly vocal version, but a full speed version. In fact due drummer's usual over enthusiasm syndrome we do it faster than the recording quite often. Dont get me wrong, it's a workout but that syncopated feel is fun to play bouncing off doublebass strings, an the audience love it. -
Today I found out what 808 basses sound like

There was a good documentary on the 808 on either Netflix or Amazon Prime, can't remember which. -

That's fine and a decent price, but Candy isn't Sparkle, and a lot of the time Candy Apple Red isn't a true Candy anymore, just a nice deep red pearl. But I'm not going any further, I've given my advice.

There is no issue of a transition. In order from the headstock end would be the nut, cut nice and low for fretless, then the fretless area, then the fretted area of board that has been carved a frets height lower than the the previous part. The first fret would be butted up against the higher area of board, then as per a fretted bass for the rest of the neck. When playing the fretless area, the frets are exactly the same height as the fretless board would be if it were there. When playing the fretted area the 'first' fret would have a fret behind it, butted against the fretless area, acting like the fret behind any other played fret. No transition to worry about. Another way of visualising this is to forget about frets altogether. Get a normal fretless bass and at whichever end you want the fretted area, carve the area between the 'frets' away to the depth that you like your fretted string action, the raised areas left are your 'frets' Its completely doable, but ultimately not worth it. ๐

Not joking no. I'm aware of where the custom paints originated but there aren't any 'normal' car manufacturers offering the old school candy colours nowadays. Candy is a metallic base coat (usually gold or silver) with a tinted lacquer built up in several layers over the top, three stage pearl is similar but not the same, and a sparkle finish (metallic is different) is unheard of in current standard car finishes. Candy and sparkle are completely different things. Most bodyshops won't even have a gun set up with a large enough air cap to spray a proper sparkle, the flakes are very big compared to metallic, it'll go through a primer gun but not nicely. The fact is a sparkle finish is more costly to supply and apply than a standard finish. I was just offering my advice as someone who's been in automotive refinishing and custom paintwork for over thirty years, but maybe I shouldn't bother.
-
Not necessarily. A standard finish, yes, but sparkle is a different kettle of fish to any standard car finish. Also for this reason a 'cost effective' sparkle finish might be a stretch. Standard poly finish would be primer, couple coats of base colour and a couple of coats of lacquer, all done wet on wet, ie not drying or flatting between coats as it's not necessary, then very minimal polishing, if needed. Sparkle would be primer then base colour, then multiple layers of heavy flake, then multiple layers of lacquer to bury the sparkle flake. It would probably need drying, or at least a very long flash off time between stages due to the amount of material going on. Then a lot of flatting and polishing to lose the contours of the flake to get a flat finish. Much more product is used and it's far more time consuming. There are other techniques to achieve these finishes but the time and material differences are roughly the same. ๐

You appear to be getting rather worked up over someone not understanding what you see as basic physics. Yet I don't understand why you, or anyone else, hasn't thought of the, to me, blindingly obvious answer to the problem of the high action on the fretless part. Ask yourself this, why does the board have to be the same height along its length? If the fretless part was the same height as the top of the frets then you could achieve a nice low action on both the fretted and fretless areas, whichever way around they were. Even better action could be achieved for fretless if the fretless part were at the lower end as the nut could be filed right down, nearly to the board as a fretless should be. Some people don't/can't visualise things the way that others can, but there's no reason to belittle them. ๐

I took great pleasure in taking my computer to the tip after it sat there, taking up space, for three years without even being switched on. I'm not a ludite, I gig with a Variax, into a digital multi pedal, DI'd into an X Air virtual desk and control my mix with a tablet, but if it does nothing to make my life easier/simpler then I'm not interested.
