dunno check out what stuff saxon used they wrote and recorded most of the songs i think!
They actually wrote and recorded the material themselves, though Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) is supposed to have gone on tour with Saxon for research purposes.

Do they still do finishes in cellulose? I that that laws surrounding the use of their solvents had killed it off for most commercial purposes?
Hello Dave I took the pick-up surround off the bridge pick-up on my Ibanez copy Rickenbacker and the connections came off. The wires from the controls seemed to be attached to a single piece of copper wire. Is this so? How do I re-attach the cable to the pick-up? Thanks Alan
Hi there Alan, welcome to the forum. It might be worth your while shooting Bassassin a PM. He loves all things JapCrap and has restored a few Rickenfakers (though not as far as I know an Ibanez). Oh, and stick some pics up in this thread - it doesn't exist until we've seen the pictures.

Italia Mondial Like Bass Doc says, burns have done some nice examples. I rather like the scratchplate-on-top-of-a-scratchplate look of the Sonic. Actually, the Mondial has that as well - I'm beginning to see a theme.
Sorry to 'jack a little but I have a sort of relevant question. If you have one member of the band who writes the songs, would the band have to go through PRS to distribute extra cash to him since they are kind of covering the individual's work? Or would the fact he's playing in the band negate that? And if he left the band, would they have to pay (through PRS?) to play the songs the former member wrote?
If I understand your question correctly, all that the songwriter has to do is to join PRS to get any royalties due to him. The rest of the band don't have to join PRS as none of you are songwriters (unless of course you write for other projects, in which case if you want royalties for them you'd be advised to join). The band don't pay directly for 'covering' his songs live, as that'd be down to the venue to pay PRS fees (though in Telebass' case the venue are trying to recoup those fees from the band). PRS just collects royalties generated from public performances from the organisation making them available to the public, not directly from the band performing them.
Those are the RRPs I've quoted from a big price list at the back of the magazines. You would probably be able to negotiate a discount in some of the bigger stores. With USA gear a lot would depend on the strength of the pound against the dollar. I have no idea if that changed, or by how much, between 1977 and 1981 but it might have made a difference. Fender had also taken a severe bashing in that period for poor quality so that might also have affected their prices.
Good point - the pound was seriously overvalued in the early eighties so that would have made any US made basses relatively cheap.
-
I've still got a stack of mags from that era as well. I've got to say that the prices you're quoting do seem quite hot though. I bought my Precision new in 1981 for £250 - that's about £737 now. Admittedly I was fortunate enough to live near one of the cheapest dealers in the country, but that holds up pretty well today's prices.
No! You can have a bar divided into seven equal parts but that is described differently, 7 over 4.... 5 over 4 etc. But that is not written as a time signature and cannot result in subdivision in the way the lower number of the two can (it can always be divided into smaller elements) But there is no lower denomination of 7 as in 8/7 <--- this is wrong So lets be clear so we don't spread mis information. 12/7 is wrong The lower number is always divisible by 2.
Hmm... this would seem to suggest that's not the case.
He must have invented a new note length value then - perhaps its me but there is no such thing as a Seventh note!
My understanding is that it is possible to write a part in 12/7, where the whole note is broken into 7 equal parts - whether it's useful to write the piece out that way is a different matter.

There's a review here - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=10697 If you do a search on 'omni' you'll find lots of threads about them - plenty of people here have built them or bought them off someone else.
-
You could always build a BFM Omni 10.5. http://www.billfitzmaurice.com If I remember rightly they weigh in at around 28-32lbs, depending on the density of the ply you use. You can trim the weight a bit by using 1/2" ply.

A bit of foam rubber beneath the pickup should sort you out.
Anyone with any links or info on these'd be appreciated also! I mean I know it was built in '78 in the Matsomuko(??) Factory-Japan... Fender Bought that co. right??? Became Fender Japan??? That right too?? Cheers, Rod
Doubtless Jon will be along to set you right, but I think Grecos were built by a number of factorys including Fuji Gen, who did indeed go on to build jap Fenders. The were never 'Fender Japan' though, just one of the factories that have built japanese Fenders (along with Dyna and Tokia a bit later). I might be imagining it but I think Jon said there was some doubt about which factory actually made the rickenfakers - I'd guess Fuji Gen looking at the checkered binding, but Jon's your man for these kind of details. Incidentally, Matsumoku weren't bought by anyone - Singer (who owned the factory) closed it in 1987 and later the factory burned down.
Thanks Any idea what vintage these specs are from?
The reference to dot markers and 33 1/4" scale might suggest that the specs are taken from a v63. Edit: Or possibly the Chris Squire model. There was no actual difference in scale length to the older models, just the way Rick measured it.
Thanks for the replies & advice guys...........Well,i went back to the shop yesterday & had another blast on the Cort T34 & i love it....so much so,that i've ordered one!! Unfortunately, the one in the shop was a "Geometric copper" colour, which is weird because it's actually a sort of metallic silver flake colour...Anyway,i've ordered a black one & it's on it's way...I'll post pics as soon as. Also,i've decided to buy a Thunder 1...Currently watching 2 on the bay now.
Excellent! The obvious answer really - buy them both! Why didn't I think of that?

Cheap amp good sound vs good amp bad sound...Laney/Peavey vs Mark Bass
Musky replied to urb's topic in Amps and Cabs
Had an on-off love & (more) hate relationship with Trace Elliot gear for nearly two decades, though love the V-Type set up I've got now - just a nice sound without much messing with it's (albeit) basic EQ. An amp I personally rate ,had & very much regret getting rid of is H/H VS Musician 100w head with 'valve sound' . Killer amp (IMHO). Will undoubtably buy another, when I find one at a sensible price i.e. cheap! Cheers
I really rate those HH amps as well - fantastic sound. I fact I've had generally good experiences with HH all round. I bought a little Studio 60 combo after using one in a studio, and still have a Bass Machine. Despite not having used it for years I'm never going to get rid of it because it sounds so nice. -
What colour scratchplate on a vintage white P bass
Musky replied to boabskiboab's topic in Bass Guitars
Oh come on guys - a white P bass has got to have a black pickguard. It's the law. -
I'm going to stick my neck out and say I reckon both the neck and body are genuine US Fender parts. The FRR stamp appears on a lot of necks, although I don't remember any with slashes between the characters. 4 digit numbers also appeared on necks around this time as well. I don't recognise the name of the person who inspected the neck either (ends in NTA?) but the names of inspectors are a work in progress for me. I'm assuming the colour is tobacco sunburst (very dark brown rather than black edges). The routing has been hacked away, but around '79 Fender did have the round router locating hole under the bridge. The Ampro cover would have been hiding batteries I'd imagine - a retro fit of actives would explain all the other routing as well. A good buy I reckon.
L2 Steinberger surely...
I was just reading through this and was surprised nobody had mentioned the Steinberger before. Just a question though: how long does it take before a bass becomes a classic? And does popularity have anything to do with classic status?
like josh said, the euro exchange rate right now is rubbish. I doubt they're expecting anybody from england to buy it, considering it's a german site, and that's probably a fairly decent price over there.
I know the exchange rate is pretty crap right now, but £1799 works out at about €1992 if someone in the Euro zone were to buy direct from Status. That's €1000 extra that shop in Germany is asking. I know shipping can be a rip off in the UK, but it's not going to set you back €1000.
In 'metal' circles...lets just say,at my level Im about to experience..... catering is a very low priority for promoters towards bands.
You might be surprised. In most of the former Eastern Bloc countries I've been fed extremely well - they put promoters in this country to shame. And if you're driving in Poland you might like to take some rubber pants with you. I'm sure things have improved somewhat since they've joined the EU, but their roads (and drivers) were some of the most scary I've come across.
