1. Ace, I've got a P so I'll put my boot through my practice amp tonight :-D
2. I bought some cheap CDs yesterday including Stranglers hits...... Any idea what kind of pedal can create that JJB growl eg the intro to Peaches? What Bass did he use generally back then..a P?
3. Yep, LMAO...... I'm thinking as I can't play bass, I'll stick a pedal on and I'll sound great :-D
4. Just ordered a diago powerstation and a couple of fender custom shop tweed patch cables to match my bass cable :-) I'm going to get the ashdown bassometer as my next pedal :-). .... Then maybe a chorus and a fuzz or something...might try the big muff thing and see what that sounds like.... Might buy some more at next years Bass Show :-)
5. Ace thanks guys.....rock on in a fuzzy way :-)
6. Hey guys, I've got my first pedal..an Ashdown LoMenzo distortion pedal and bought a 9v adapter for it. I might get a few more pedals but I'm not sure how to connect them up and power them. I've been looking at your pedal boards etc and just took a look at diago mentioned on page 67 of Bass Guitar Magazine this month. The pedals seem to be connected to each other with small cables. So do you plug your bass into the first pedal and then plug the amp into the last one? .... And is it input on the first pedal from the bass, output into the second pedal etc..... What are these small cables called? Diago seem to have something to power all the pedals..... How does that work? Do you just plug it into the first pedal maybe? I don't want to have to use a 9v adapter for each pedal...... I'll probably just rig up a few on the floor unless you think it is better to start making up a board where the pedals seem to be attached by Velcro ...... I doubt I'd use my own board, probably buy one..any recommendations for a newbie? Thanks :-)
7. I'm thinking of getting my first set of new strings. Thought I might experiment with my squire P Bass and leave my Fender P as it is for a while...... Might get elixirs for that ( good choice ? ). As a newbie I press the strings fairly hard and sometimes I slip off the edge of the G string so I thought I might try heavy guage. Thought maybe custom slinkies...... All strings except the E are thicker...... What do you think or maybe rotosound in a heavy guage........ Will I get a deeper sound out of heavy guage on all strings?
8. Age 54 and spandex don't go together but I have bought a rattle snake hat band with a rattle on it :-) ...just need to be able to play bass and then join a band :-)
9. I don't think it's going to work though....... Almost bought a limited edition Hoffner Jubilee for £650...... Probably get a Hagstrom Viking next to see what it's like playing blues, probably a sunburst Hoffner............ And when I'm rich and famous, a Ray, Gretsch, Rickie, .and Jazz........ So I'll probably end up skint
10. Me, I went from a squire P Bass to a 2012 Fender AM Standard all within 6 months....... Guessed it would be cheaper in the long run :-D
11. I dunno , as a newbie TAB helps me work out if a third or fifth is being used or used in conjunction with fingering positions what scale is being used ...... But in the last few days I've been working out what notes they are as well..... So I started with just TAB, then TAB plus type of note, shape of notes, timing of notes from the score, and now TAB plus naming the notes...... Maybe in the future I can play automatically just from the score and understand the note name, why and how it's used.... I hope so... On the other hand I might just slap and pop everything in sight or just play straight sixteenth notes... I bet that's done before :-D
12. Great thanks for that Flea link..I've not seen him before and it's good to see he had Fretbuzz and a flying off first finger on the major scales... I've got hope :-)
13. Well done, nice one..It only takes about 2 weeks...I think it's a very high pass, merit starts at about 74 I think .think you just missed out by 2 :-(
14. I've kept that link thanks but all I've bought are shop cables so far... The last was a retro looking Fender Custom Shop cable in the smallest length I could find as I'm told that the smaller cable you can get away with the better the signal. One thing that I've been thinking about though is that i used to get gold plated connections for my tv surround/ play station etc.... Not seen any gold plated bass ones in the shops... How come as I thought you'd get a better signal etc with them ?..
15. I've only heard the Wanted playing a Bongo back at the bridge all night and it sounded great ...... :-) not heard another MM as yet
16. I visited Denmark Street a few months back and I was disappointed with the shops I went into but it was late and some had shut already. I was looking to try a hagstrom Viking but couldn't find one anywhere :-( I did get chance to hear a guy on an ashdown 300 combo but he was paying a fake rockmeister or something very dissimilar to a Rickie and it sounded pants :-(
17. As a newbie I use tab combined with the notation above to see what kind of note it is but as I haven't learned every note on the fretboard as yet I'd be fairly lost. I could work out the name of the note eg all cows eat grass.. But if I did that and worked out what string to use, the song would have finished before I pressed the first fret :-(. Trying to hit every note on time in a song is taking me weeks and weeks of practice... In fact I've only been able to nail one song of five in Rockschool Grade 3 so far in about 2 months:-( ..it's on utube...... Without TAB it would take even longer I've always wanted to play an instrument and TAB is giving me that chance........ I spend more hours reading music, books, listening to book CDs , and looking at utube than I do holding my Bass :-(. Stuff like the circle of fifths, inner circle, inverted arpeggios, complex weird chords is really complex to grasp and I've got a first class honours degree but at least with TAB, after beating myself up with the inability to understand all that stuff... I can play a few notes and make something very loosely described as music :-)
18. +1. I don't mind any mistakes because the commentary is so good for me as a newbie :-) Check out my first vid for a laugh .... It's on utube as Old Bones Blues Rockschool Grade 3
19. Funny enough I can see the frets he is playing better with the glove .... Got to admire Scott for playing through the problem ...... I get Marlow as well but as his hands hardly move, I can never figure out the frets he is playing :-(. Scott helps by naming the notes, frets so I'll take a look at all his vids.... Didn't know that you could do dead notes on three strings and the notes would sound different until yesterday..... Lots of stuff in Scott's vids that I've not come across in numerous books :-)
20.
+1000 Scott is a great guy and educator. Helped me with scale substitutions...
Ace, thanks for that ..lbeen watching some of Scott's vids on ibiza hotel free Internet and just registered too.... Learned loads in the last few hours :-)
21. It's great that there are real professionals on BC as an inspiration to us newbies :-) I'm finding it is a fraternity of sorts :-) Bassists are cool :-)
22. Easy .... Just get the grade book you want but watch you don't get sold the old syllabus..it's 2012 syllabus now with a white fender jazz on the cover...and when you are ready you can apply online........ I bought my Rockschool Grade 3 Bass book online :-)
23. Thanks for that :-). No way will I get that in my exam :-). I bought grade 3 syllabus as the pieces are the same so hope to jam with him :-)
