Recommendations for inexpensive PJ pickups for 5 string?

I see your point, but if I go bust on budget before finishing I have no bass! -
My mate told me that I would like this new band 'Marillion' back in 82. It was before they even had a record deal. I rang the record shop in Aylesbury as I heard that they had some of their cheap demo tapes on the counter. The shop owner said, "they've all gone, but you could try the singer Fish, here's his phone number" (!) so yeah, I rang Fish and chatted for 25 minutes about prog. He was out of cassettes though! Then a month or two later they came to the student union bar at my home town (Luton). Still pre-record deal. The ticket was £1.50. Fish was selling tickets at the door. I asked if he'd sign one of the small gig posters and he said 'Sure, come with me , I'll get all the band to sign it" So we did! I was a MASSIVE Marillion fan whilst Fish was in the band, the musical love affair of my life. And here's the poster: And ticket:

I don't suppose anyone has any recommendations for inexpensive PJ pickups for 5 string (not active)? I'm just planning building my first bass from scratch, and I really liked the PJ setup I had on an old bass some years ago. I don't have tons of spare wonga so I have to have a bit of a budget mindset. I don't want active as I have a J-Retro 01 that I'm planning on sticking in. Anything cheap (ish) but useable out there?

Head of design and branding for Public Health England. Been working at the same place for 30 years (although the organisation has changed a few times). I've been insanely busy with COVID-19 this year, I was producing all the early posters and info for all airports/uni's and ports (in 8 languages).

I've been fishing around on the internet for something - no luck so far. What I really want is a postscript pdf that I can edit and then print myself. Anyone seen any plans anywhere? Failing that I guess I'll have to knock something up from scratch, although that could have potential for massive error!

Saw an awesome bass on a Lee Ritenour live video. Tracked down the bass player as Hadrien Feraud, and then the bass as a Mayones Jabba Hadrien Feraud 5. Sure would like one of these! I'm hoping to make a bass later this year, it may well look like this ... https://mayones.com/page/jabba-hadrien-feraud-5/

Rush - Spirit of Radio Queen - Spread your wings (very underrated song ELO - Mr Blue sky -
Rush were one of the most important bands of my life. As a teen I was in awe of Neil's long hair and long moustache look! Needless to say, his drumming was epic. It is a failing of my life that I never got to see Rush live. Rest in peace and thank you for creating a huge part of the soundtrack of my life.

Hey, I hope people noticed that I added the hair at the top as well!

Here's another one!

I was at Art college in Norwich having the time of my life 82-85. I found a lot of great music, saw lots of great gigs and probably did a bit of art as well somewhere. Out of the blue I just remembered today an album that blew my mind when I bought it in back in 85. I literally haven't heard it for decades as my copy is vinyl, and we have had no room in our house for my record player over the past 27 years of marriage. I need to buy a copy on CD!!! Anyway, yeah so this is it - Stanley Clarke, Find out! I absolutely adored that active bass sound. The playing was immense and the songs were catchy and vibrant. I bought a bunch of Stanley Clarke records afterward, but this one has always been my favourite.

I'm well on the way to finishing guitar build no 5, and I fancy tackling a bass next. I'me just wondering if anyone can help in terms of pickups as I don't actually know much about basses other than playing a few over the years. There are two kinds of sound that I like and I'm wondering what I would need to get them: 1) The Rickenbacker sound that Geddy Lee or Chris Squire used to get around the early days of Rush/Yes 2) an active type sound - like Mark King I guess. Any suggestions for the kind of pickups/electronics would get me in the right ballpark?

I'm (probably) not going to make a Fender copy, but I've made 5 guitars and I like to start with a pdf plan that I can then edit to get it the way I want. It can look radically different but still have the basic geometry of a bass that one likes. Having said that, nothing wrong with making a Fender-like, or any other copy if that is what one wants to do

Is there a resource anywhere for bass plans - postscript pdf rather than image files? I'm looking to make a bass at some point. I'm sure that I had a site bookmarked with a lot of fender stuff, but I can't seem to find it now.

I just can't get enough of this sort of bass playing! love the bass tone. Henrik Linder does get rather too muso for me in some instances, but I love his playing with Dirty Loops, which is very song focussed.

I completely disagree with that. Seems a pretty negative stance to me but hey, we are all different and we are all entitled to an opinion.

Generally I'm a classic rock/prog/metal sort of guy, but I absolutely LOVED Chic! The bass playing was a thing of beauty to my ears, the songs were fantastic and a big trip down memory lane, the musicianship was top notch and they were clearly all having a great time. It was a superb way to see the new year in. I'm not really into the whole firework thing, seen it all a million times before so I didn't watch, I'd have preferred them to play right through personally.
