Bass guitar worth.... (I saw a new bass in my local shop today)
cloudburst replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
You don't look old enough to have been playing in 1974 ! It sounds like you have got a good one and looked after it . I have played and owned a few wrecks from that era and after .
Hey thanks for the compliment. I've just turned 48 and that photo in my profile was taken this year :-) Back on the 74 jazzes - obviously you'll always get some old instruments that have had a hard life, but of those that have been cared for, does it tend to be the 3 bolt neck models which you think aren't as good, or just Fenders in general go patchy from the mid 70s? I think mine cost about £300 back then which was a lot of money in 1974 when I was 9. I guess it has been good value. The original strings certainly owe me nothing :-) I probably have already posted some photos of it. CB -
ironically it's probalby better on average than the basses it's aping!
A bit confused about what you and Dingus are saying about '74 jazzes. I still play the 74 jazz that my dad bought for me in 1974. It has a 4 bolt neck, is quite light, has a beautiful neck and stays absolutely in tune regardless of the season - I haven't needed to go near the truss rod since the late 70s. Do you know something I don't? CB -
Can a Fender Precision Bass boil an egg?
cloudburst replied to EssentialTension's topic in Bass Guitars
Most Precisions have two pots, and it only takes one to boil an egg ...
But they don't have any pan control. CB -

Precisions produce a nice 'fat' sound when used on your latest albumen. CB -
I'd thoroughly recommend the little Markbass Micromark 801. I love mine. CB
What Ibanez model was it ?? If you don't mind.
I think it was an SR300. CB

The MusicMan Sterling does not fit in this list. And to put it beneath the 'Sterling by MusicMan' entries makes no sense at all. The Sterling is a different instrument to the StingRay - smaller body, thinner neck, different electronics and actually more expensive than the StingRay, so I don't know what that does to your 'pecking order'. In any case - pecking order schmecking order - I was playing an Ibanez bass in a store this afternoon and for about £250 it played far better than many £1000+ instruments I've played - and on a par with my US MusicMan instruments! HOW GOOD ARE STINGRAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cloudburst replied to marcus bell's topic in General Discussion
When choosing your 'real' SR, as you call it, I'd recommend trying the various neck finishes, just to see what era and series you like the feel of best. I'd also recommend, due to your affinity for Jazzes, that you try the SR SLO special. Ref some of the points made above: Had a SR back in the day and it was ok. But I much prefer my Bongo to the SR. Perhaps I just wasn't playing the sort of music that caused me to really get the best of the SR back then. However - I've recently surprised myself by starting to use my Steinberger XL-2 almost 100% of the time. MattM is right - the feel and playability of this little all-graphite bass is the best I've yet experienced - not to mention the tone and sustain. It kind of spoils you for other basses. Ref the Teal coloured MM basses - I have to agree. My fretless is a transparent Teal MM Sterling with matching headstock and it looks, sounds and feels great. Through the OC-2 - I think you'd love it for obvious reasons. Ref the green SR above - please let's not start a "Why can't you get green guitars?" thread - we all know what happened when someone made that comment on a certain manufacturer's forum a few years ago. What are you listening to right now?

Sister Sledge. CB -
Most people have never played a Bongo. So be careful who you listen to. My Bongo is the only bass ever to produce an unsolicited compliment from a drummer (re the tone). It's got a great neck. And the preamp controls are very easy once you learn not to over-control. No point repeating what others have said, so the only other point I'll add is that it's also very quiet. CB

+1 for the Markbass CMD 121p CB

Strangely, one of the only Rickenbackers I've ever played had a very similar fault. It was a black one, secondhand and for sale at the time in CC Music, Glasgow. May be worth giving them a call. This would have been under a year ago, so they may remember the cause. CB

This doesn't show the complexity and varying depths etc. I will take a photo without the bass when I get back near my flightcase :-) CB -
Replacing the Foam Lining in a Flight Case
I got a cracking case made in Edinburgh by http://www.warehouse...aps.php#glasgow years ago, They now have a place in Glasgow too, might be worth a punt. The foam lining is FBO.
Well I got a GREAT job done by The Warehouse in Edinburgh. Didn't even have to drive there as they collected and returned to their Glasgow branch. Alan is a really nice guy. At his request, I taped some paper together to make a life size representation of the case area. Then I did a very detailed pencil technical drawing of my Steinberger XL-2. This included varying depths, curved areas and 'finger' areas for extracting the bass. There were a LOT of down-to-the-millimetre measurements. Frankly, I was a bit worried about the complexity I had asked for. However, when the case was turned around in only a few days, I needn't have worried. It fits my XL-2 like a glove. Perfect job. Cost £60 plus VAT. Will post a photo if anyone wants to see. Many thanks to Alan at The Warehouse. CB -

The slap bass got very irritating. I noticed some bloke going round all the stands, plugging in his odd looking bass and then treating everyone to the slap fest he thought we wanted. It was okay until he was rude enough to play over the sublime Yolanda Charles during her performance. On the positive side, kudos to young Jake for taking to the stage from the audience with his bass to play with the great Nate Watts. CB -
