I had exactly the same problem when I watched 'Lesbo Nymphos 3' last night.
I was going to watch that but haven't seen the first two yet.
  2.
I saw Hadrien's performances at Bass Day 2007 and 2008. In all honesty, the 2007 performance was very inspiring. I think that was because he came on his own and did his set with a couple of UK musicians, so it was probably an awful lot more "free" playing. In 2008 he had his band, so was an awful lot more rehearsed, and in my opinion took something away from the performance. In both instances though, I was still in awe of him as an incredible bassist. I wish I had half the talent. I also saw Janek, and went to see him in a very small club in Altrincham a couple of days later. It was a great little set, and again, an incredibly talented bassist. Added to that, I had a good chat to both of them after their performances and can honestly say I found nothing about either of them to dislike. Oh, and apart from that, back on topic.....I like the sig model.
As much as I like Hadrien's playing, his Bass Day '08 performance didn't do it for me. Janek's gig in Altrincham was great though-although his Rotherham gig in '09 was even better. I've linked to this before but it's worth doing again.................
Perhaps they should call it the KAdis... Thats 'Dad' humour if ever there was! But I don't have any kids...
Funnily enough that was it's nickname.
  6.
No I don't do this, I can't see the point. I know what pitch I want when I fret a note and if I get it wrong it wouldn't be any less wrong if I was singing the pitch at the same time, would it?
It's not just about hitting the correct-it's about singing a melodic idea that you would probably not naturally play an replicate it on the instrument. You are more likely to sing something that it is more melodic and with better phrasing than what you would play, and singing gives you new ideas to play.
  7. Bass Player transcribed 'Son of a preacher man' in,I think Feb '06. It's a great bass line by Tommy Cogbill.
  8. I don't so much sing what I play, but play what I sing-there's a difference. The idea is to be able to sing a melodic idea and be able to play it-instantly. It forces you to step outside of your regular patterns, because you are likely to sing more melodic ideas than your hands would naturally play. It also helps you with pitching, which is handy as I often sing BV's,and have been known to take the occasional lead.
  9. This seemed as good a thread as any to post this........... http://www.voicecapo.com/index.php/
  10. So the Washburn and the Traben signature models weren't enough then?
  11.
(Found this by searching of threads about ramps..) I've seen his signature live, even got a photo on my phone, but, it's rubbish (the photo, i mean) - outstanding looking, and, even more, sounding bass! Hadrien is also a very nice chap, and I don't really understand, how some people slag him off, when they don't even know him well. And, Pete, what's wrong with Janek Gwizdala? He's not my biggest influence, but, he's a very dedicated and talented musician.. Just curious.
I think what Pete was getting at is that there have been a few threads that have undeservedly slagged off Janek in the past, which sucks as he's a top bloke and monster player.I think this thread was heading the same way(only about Hadrien) at one point.
  12. I can take a joke, but that video didn't prove much-If anything it kind of backed up what I've been saying all along. Oh yeah, and 'Friends' isn't funny anyway
  13.

Your point being........? If you use big words that you don't understand you sound like an arse? Maybe if he'd have had a better grasp of the language to begin with he would have been able to say something better anyway.
  14.
I'm not sure if Louis Johnson can read, but he was hired by loads of major artists because of his style.
Exactly-he was hired because of his style. But, his style became unpopular and his work load dwindled, which is why he now runs a martial arts school. The problem with being a stylist is what happens when that style falls out of favour?
  15.
I know what the notes on the board are.
I know you do- I was refering to Iconic's comment about struggling to learn the notes on the 'board.
I thought the old joke was "I should have taken up the harmonica", not "I should have taken up the saw"! It's good to know that basses have ridden in KA's prior to attempting to squeeze one in there- thanks! I did used to get a Trace 4x10, 1x15 and head in the back of mine with two electric basses on the front seat in a double bag. I think that is why the suspension needs replacing...
Is that all you could fit in? I have been know to fit in my KA - my 2x10 cab, flightcased head, two PA speakers( 12" w/ horn),Box containing Mixing Desk and leads, speaker and mic stands, 2 basses in seperate gig bags-AND my guitarist, his Marshall combo, guitar, and accessory bag and both out suit bags!!!!!!!!!!!! I've also carried my rig with 4x10 plus whole drum kit and drummer. I've now got a van
  17.
I'm sure I read somewhere that some very, very talented musicians can't read music, let alone understand the theory.....Mark King comes to mind? (Edit) Anyway music theory?.....I'm still struggling to learn the notes on my fretboard, god knows when I get will around to breaking down an Emadd9 chord?
I've noticed that when people use the argument about good players who don't know any theory or anything they always refer to guy's like Mark King, who are stylistic 'band' guys. These players are cool and everything-and are successful-but they are not good examples in this kind of debate as they have found a very small niche and gained popularity within the confines of one band. There are a ton of players who have made a good career out of being a pro musician-some very well known, others not- without being in a popular band, and they generally have a decent idea about what they are doing. There are also a load of players who have been in successful bands who have ended up leaving the business after their popularity waned and they didn't have the knowledge or ability to diversify. As far as learning notes on the 'board-I honestly feel that this is a majorly important thing and should be addressed very early on in the learning process.
  18. Mike Gordon has been using a Yamaha Subkick to mike up his Eden/Meyer Sound rig on the current Phish tour. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3437/386474...028aecdf7_b.jpg

I used to be able to fit my Upright in my old KA. With the back seats down it used to just touch the back door and have a couple of inches between the headstock and the front window. There was also enough room for my combo amp and accessories. I used to fit a crazy amount of gear in the back of my KA-and another passenger.

    Up to £500

I'd go for the MTD-they're great instruments. I picked up an MTD Kingston Heir a few years ago for just over £200!!! I've done a load of gigs with it,all over the place, and it always plays and sounds great.
  21.
By the way, he's named Tony Silver, and to this day we seriously hate each other.
He doesn't hate you anymore- he died a couple of years ago.
  22. Lessons? Seriously, it will allow you to progress better and without going backwards. Also a good teacher will point out where you are going wrong, and why things aren't sounding right.
  23.
Absolutely.... is it really any different to having one of those Drop tuners fitted to your bass?
Yes-because a drop tuner gives you notes that were previously unavailable-a capo takes away notes that were previously available. I don't really see the need for a capo on bass, but then again,I don't for guitar either- I've never used one and neither do most of the guitarists I play with.
  24.
I cannot recall where I first heard/read this, but I recall someone well known saying "learn all the theory you can and then when you're comfortable with it, throw it all away" (I paraphrashe I'm sure) and this can also be true.
I wouldn't exactly put it like that. For me,everything that you study should be put to one side when you are performing, and eventually it will begin to become part of your vocabulary and will naturally come out in your playing. The trick is knowing it well enough to not have to think about it.
  25.
ever considered the viewpoint that knowing theory may well cloud your judgement, cause you to overthink things and base your lines on what your told sounds right, rather than what your ears thinks sounds right?
I've never considered that view point because it's bullshit. The way I always look at it is I have never once heard anyone complain that they know how to do something. I've got pretty decent ears, and can busk well, but knowing what I'm doing makes it a hell of a lot easier to work out what's happening. You say that you think you are 'pretty good' as you are-that's great, but why would you choose to limit yourself by ignoring something that would improve your understanding of music?
Whenever someone is giving me chords to play, I always say, 'Just give me the root notes.' When the song is playing, even if I haven't heard it before, I can usually guess what notes to play within the chord by listening.
I hate just being told the roots. I want to know what the chord is-I don't want to play a b7 over a major 7 chord,it'll just sound bad,and knowing what is going on will eliminate any guess work and allow me to just play.
