1. I can just about hear 12kHz, but that's it-and I'm 29!!!
2. I think the thing is,that you weren't playing through a bad amp. The Hartke 3500 is a really good head. It may not be super high tech compared to a lot of the new lightweight stuff, but it is a good sounding, working players amp. That's why there are alot of players using them. They may be inexpensive compared to some, but it's not 'cheap sh*t'.
3. So the Smashing Pumpkins have announced their new bass player. The gig has gone to Nicole Fiorentino, who was the bass player in Veruca Salt and has previously worked with Billy Corgan. Hmmmmmm.......Another female bass player with prior connections to the band? The open audition appears to be really fair now don't they.
4.
This track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY_0QReTPkc sampled Black Cow by Steely Dan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pJ2iw9xieo
"Uptown Baby,Uptown Baby" Word
5.
I've just got this book. Haven't started it yet but it looks great for learning new styles and opening up at any page to play something else for a change. Definatly one for the library but I didn't find it very helpful with theory becasue its in TAB which I can't help myself from reading.
Cover the tab up then

Nearly Dan
Just have to say I was there on Friday night - with Baaaaabara of course - & if you were not then you missed a real treat! Great musicianship, including a brass section to die for, unbelievable harmonies & the Fat Wire's no slouch for an old Dodderer Nearly Dan are a Professional Outfit with talent in abundance & if you ever get the chance to see them - GO! I promise you, you will not be disappointed! I think we are all aware that Dan stuff aint no 'three chord bashers' & these guys do a really good job, 'Mu majors' & all!! On Friday, the venue was very well attended - OK IT WAS FULL - you gotta get there VERY early if you want a seat - great sound + real ale & Pro Musicians = a bloody good night. Sorry to be so gushing about this band, but they are a real treat to watch & unfortunately don't play locally often enough - 'Local' venues please note - book this band & you will be full to capacity of very thirsty, appreciative music fans!! Looking forward to the next Gig & hope it's not going to be too far away! Not going to next Nearly Dan Gig??? - ''Only A Fool Would Say That'' !!
Did you enjoy them,then?
7. Tuner (Waiting to get the TC Poly tune), Ernie Ball volume pedal,TC Nova Repeater, Boss OC2, Emma DiscumBOBulator and ReezaFRATzitz. So that's 6....... That'll do.
8. Alright then...... I'll bite
Mark King took Grahams style and improved it 1000%....he took it to completely much higher dimensions.
No he didn't.
AS I SAID BEFORE. Im new here, and cant believe the agression towards Mark King.. He's done so much for bringing bass to the fore, prob more than anyone in the last 30 years. And to those who just dismiss him as a machine gun slap-bassist...you need to open your minds and ears and really have a listen to Level 42... Mark is a top top class finger style player too!! as good as anyone on the planet!!...he plays with lots of heart and is well- brilliant at either style he chooses to play....and is a great singer too (the fact that he sings at the same time as playing such amazing basslines is incredible)...give their music and albums a real good listen and dont just dismiss him......who on here has achieved as much as Mark? nobody!! LISTEN TO THE MUSIC.
You seem quite aggressive here. I've listened to a lot of Level 42,and I like them as a band.I just don't think that Mark King deserves to be in the pantheon of the greatest players. I can name a hundred players who I think are far superior players. As far as who here has achieved as much as him. He has made a name for himself as a 'stylistic' player in one band. That's cool and everything, but I generally have more respect for players who can step outside of a singular band situation-players like Will Lee,Nathan East, Marcus,AJ etc. I know that there are players on here who can,and have, done the kind of work that Mark King or (and Flea)could never have done if they hadn't have got lucky with one band.
9. The Massive Attack track 'Safe from Harm' sampled the bassline from Billy Cobhams 'Stratus'. Warren G's 'Regulate' used samples from Michael McDonalds 'I Keep Forgetting' and Bob James 'Sign of the Times'. The SWV track 'Rain' is a based around a sample of Jaco's 'Portrait of Tracy'.
10. I can't help but think that the 'skills' part of the audition is pretty pointless in this situation, because it doesn't matter how technical or groovy you are if you struggle to read the pad.
11.
I'm not even sure I'll get into it properly yet. I don't own a guitar. I just want something that sounds good, plays good funk, and preferably with a thin fretboard/really good action to make frets easy as my hands arent the biggest in the world.
The bass won't play good funk-it's all about what you play on it. I'd recommend a visit to a few of your local shops and look at a load of instruments, and see what you like. Look at Ibanez,Squier,Yamaha,Cort....find one in your price range that feels good to you.
12. So,he's been listening to Jaco and Wooten then. The problem with that for me is that it has no flow to it. It seems like a selection of 'licks' that he just put together, especially the slapped sections where he seemed to run out of ideas quickly before jumping quite abruptly to another 'lick'. He also played a lot of Jaco 'licks'. He's got good technique, but his problem is he doesn't seem to have any musical ideas.
13. The pads for most of the big musicals are often available as piano/vocal score, but you will be lucky to get the full score,as they are usually hired by a theatre company for the length of the run,and are not cheap. Unless you are lucky and find someone who has photocopied the parts(which the majority of players can't be bothered to do),it's a pretty slim chance that you will be able to find the full charts.
14. I get amp GAS all the time. I used a Hartke rig for years, but got serious GAS after trying a Bergantino cab, that I had to have it. I still lust after new amps-most recently the Mark Bass and TC stuff, but it goes away after when I plug in my Genz Benz/Bergantino rig. Another Bergantino cab would be nice though......or Epifani.......or Aguilar.........
15. What Bilbo said. Lately, for function work I've been favouring my Fender deluxe Jazz 5,but to be honest it's because it's a pretty new purchase rather than it being the 'best'. If you've got a good, working instrument it doesn't matter what brand it is.
16. On the occassions when use a pick,I usually go for either Dunlops between 1.1(I think) and 1.5mm or Ibanez Steve Vai model. I've also used Stubbys at times. I really can't do with thin picks that flex when you play. I find that I don't have as much control with them and can't play as quickly or cleanly as when I'm using a heavier pick.
17. I've always had a slight mid boost in my EQ. I tried it years ago after reading a thing on Will Lee's tone, and loved the sound I was getting. I've done it ever since
18.
Did you offer to correct her about her misconception about bass Vs 'normal' guitar, or teach her how to set up the PA? if not then I can't see how you feel it's justified to mock her ignorance.
Yes I did try to explain the difference and explain about the PA,but between her and her mother it was difficult to get a word in edgeways, because every time I said something one of them jumped in to contridict everything I said.
19. So,I finished teaching tonight and before I left I helped a girl set the PA up in the rehearsal room, because she obviously didn't have a clue even though she was only using a mic and a CD player.(Her mum was there too,who was a bit of a no nothing, know it all-despite the girl being in her mid 20's). Anyway,we were talking and she was telling me how she has been a pro singer for a few years and that she was looking for a pro band,so I asked her what kind of thing she was looking to do(always after work y'know). She tells me that she want's to do a pop band and that she wants guitar, drums and keys."What about Bass?" I asked, only to be told that she didn't want bass guitar because "It's too low for my voice,so I only want a normal guitar" So,she's a pro singer who doesn't know how to turn a PA on,and has no idea about what a bass does. She was indeed an idiot.
20.
Anyone know of any guys that teach around the midlands area? I live In Stoke on Trent. I'd love to have some lessons to get me moving again, seem to have lost all momentum. Must be great to get feedback from real pro's!
That'll be me then. PM me if you're interested.
21. I'll give you a bump, just because I really like the Guyatone Phaser
22. Your best bet is to play around with them and find what sounds best to you. What I would do is go Wah>Overdrive>Chorus, but move them around and see how they react with each other. I never put my tuner in line either. I'd put one like yours on top of my amp, plugged into the amps tuner out-basically because I don't find them sturdy enough to have on the floor. When using a more robust pedal tuner,I plug it into the tuner out on my volume pedal,so that it is not in my signal chain.
23. I very rarely use any compression at all,but I have had a few pedals. I had the Boss Limiter/Enhancer for about a fortnight, and didn't really get on with it. I've got an Aphex Punch Factory which is nice and really subtle, although I recently replaced it with the Emma Electronics TransMORGrifier which I prefer. Like I said,I don't really bother with compression as a general rule, but when I do my favourite one is the Emma.
24. My standard answer to the envelope filter question is to check out the Emma Electronic DiscumBOBulator. I've been using one for a while now and love it. Although I am interested in trying out the 3 Leaf Audio Groove Regulator.
25. This is kind of related..... You seem to be asking quite a few questions about your exam lately, and I've started to wonder if you are actually being taught it well. I kind of get the feeling that these issues should have been addressed earlier than a month before the exam, and that either your teacher hasn't explained it particularly well to you,or you haven't dared ask too many questions if you don't get something. But really,by now I would expect you to be pretty solid on everything and not be worried about whole sections-This close to the exam,I would be expecting you to be nailing it. If you don't ask questions, then your teacher may think you are more comfortable with the material than you actually are. I don't mean to sound like a dick, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
